I just got done binge watching documentaries on both world wars, taking in the amount of suffering and struggles millions of people who experienced that horror show went through. Then I get recommended videos of Eddie Trunk having a mental breakdown over old men in heels and makeup using backing tracks. Hearing the contrast in priorities between the two about killed me🤣
Eddie Trunk only has 3 talking points: 1. KISS continuing to tour with Thayer/Singer wearing the makeup 2. Bands touring without any original band members (specifically Foreigner) 3. Bands using backing tracks (specifically KISS)
Eddie's argument doesn't hold water when it comes to bands he's "good with." As someone pointed out, Steven Tyler always plays piano at the start of Dream On. And the piano keeps on playing even after he climbs on top of it for the dramatic conclusion, because it is sequenced. All the effects Def Leppard needs to utilize in order to recreate the Hysteria sound is also sequenced. Ed contends it all them and I'm sure it is, but they also need an engineer to enhance it. That said, even Ed once ridiculously stated"If any band had the right to use tracks is Def Leppard." LOL.
using tracks and/or samples or effects or some harmony vocals to enhance the performance is one thing. but if you're not playing your instrument live or lip singing or miming along and faking it. that's weak
He wasnt on the radio in 1978 and didnt have any famous friends yet lol. He was still in jr. high school back then. I dont think a 13 and 14 year old Eddie Trunk in 1978 gave a shit about any of this stuff. He still had his Kiss posters on his bedroom wall and worshiped these guys.
if I pay hundreds of dollars for a show I sure as shit want them to play for real .I could just stay at home and listen to a cd for cheap. Its fraud plain and simple
The only thing I'd disagree with is Eddie not understanding people's nostalgia. His whole "gimmick" is nostalgia considering he's been talking about the same bands for decades now. I guess you're saying he treats the music and these bands way more seriously than the fans do and for them it was just nostalgia and that I agree with. The fans arent emotionally invested in these bands anymore and just show up to the shows to have a good time and remember the past but Eddie treats it way more seriously than it really is because this is his entire job and career to keep these bands going as long as possible. Hes got nothing to talk about when or if Kiss finally goes away for good.
What a great challenge issued - Eddie don't introduce Track User Acts. Prove your morality. Also, he won't mention it most of the time, until the big act does first. He is worried about losing $$$ and booking offended stars. The small acts have admitted it, but if they did not Eddie would bust them. But not the big stars. This is the best counter argument to allow fake playing. Summary of the show, here: In time, people pay and discover the truth, and if they buy tickets again, then no wrong has been done. Promoters keep paying because people like the loud flashy event by itself. All the social factors justify the 'experience spend.' As the hosts said, if Zeppelin toured again with Plant having a 'high note helper,' people would pay $1000 per ticket. In the Zep case, Plant is the purist who doing solo playing tells his band to lower the key. + Eddie's Routines: I'm certain Eddie 'CMS tee shirt destroyer' Trunk gets sent a dozen messages per hour the moment a band is nabbed using tracks. The issue is expected, but at this point it's a memorized rant or 'bit' that he uses to fill time. He did not screech, so we know even he is running this take from having done it before. Each time he gets to add another incident.
I agree that Trunk makes a tit of himself. And his shrill voice is hilarious. Not to mention his obvious ego lol. He opens himself to being made fun of over it. But come on Chris and Neely. He is fundamentally right about the backing tracks issue. It's absolutely ridiculous how not live so many of these bands have become. That being said ......yes....most "fans" of these bands probably aren't emotionally invested in them anymore. I know I sure as hell am not. Not least of all because most of them have become little more than nostalgia acts. And seeing them now is little more than an exercise in nostalgia. And that's probably the main point that Eddie is missing. He does still take these bands waaaay too seriously.
The Wrecking Crew were great but Motown would have 3 different vocal groups sing on the same backing track and Berry Gordy would decide which one to release. This was all revealed when box sets came out and you could tell the same exact instrumentation was used. There's another good documentary coming out called "The Immediate Family" who were the next generation of The Wrecking Crew (Leland Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, Russ Kunkel and some others).
There also a good documentary on Stax Records and the Memphis sound called Respect Yourself. At some points Stax was rivaling Mo Town, and Otis Redding may have been just about the best singer of all time. Jimi Hendrix admitted everyone was basically just trying to imitate Booker T & MG’s from the early 1960’s…8)
def leppard of course uses some tracks/loops for intros, and digital stuff BUT totally perform and sing. and having a great stage production with screens and lights is visual. cant compare that to faking youre actual performance
speaking of fake live albums ..I am pretty sure that W.A.S.P.'s Live In The Raw is fake. And I played in bands and been involved in the recording process into my 30s and I like to think I have an eye for " fakery " The last couple times I seen Motley Crue I would swear the Nikki Sixx wasn't even playing his bass. Sure they turned him up in a spots here in and there..but most of the time his hands didn't match what the song was doing. And it seems bands on a smaller level play their stuff for real ...I seen Deicide 10 yrs ago and those guys crushed it ...if they were faking it they fooled me...
Not to beat a dead horse or anything (where is my paddle LOL), but Trunk is also a walking contradiction with replacement players as well. He has no problem that Charlie Benate and Zakk Wylde are now in Pantera. Not a tribute to Pantera, mind you, but Pantera! Why? Because they're his boys, I get it. Then John 5 replaces Mick Mars. Again. Trunk is happy 'his good friend John 5" got the gig. And yet he still has an issue with Tommy Thayer in Kiss, who essentially took the place of 'his good friend Ace' who quit the band, and got a nice golden parachute signing off the rights to his makeup to boot. My prediction: Mike Portnoy is going to end up joining Rush, and Eddie is gonna shit a brick of excitement that another one of 'his good friends". got the gig. But I'm sure if someone just as good, if not better, say Mike Mangini, got that gig - the shriller will return with a fury. he can't have it both ways.
Hes 1000% wrong. When using backing tracks everything you see on stage is still being played 100% live. Thats what he doesnt understand. Using tracks is NOT the same as lip syncing. Tracks are exclusively used for additional layers like orchestral parts etc that simply cant be played live for financial and logistical reasons. However for some bands (think Nightwish, Falling in Reverse etc) its simply part of their identity to heavily use orchestral parts, synths etc. Their songs would not work without them. And thats perfectly ok. Every band needs to write the stuff they want to write otherwise they will just burn out. And they will have to have all of the vital parts in their live performances. That means theres no other way but to use tracks because having everything played fully live is impossible.
@@metalpuppet5798I don’t believe that is what’s being discussed here. What you’re talking about is “pre recorded” tracks, in which they’re intended to enhance the song, whether it be a percussive groove or string effect , that adds to what the band is playing. What Eddie is talking about is “backing” tracks, which is the music that the band SHOULD be playing or singing live, but for whatever reason, can’t or won’t. So they pretend to be doing it with the “backing” tracks playing the music for them. Big difference!
@@charlescoleman5509 WRONG! This is NOT called "using a backing track" and everyone who claims that puts great musicians who use tracks in a bad light. What you are describing is flat out playback. With tracks the band is ALWAYS playing EVERYTHING live that they physically can. Most bands just cant bring an orchestra, synth player(s), a choir etc. In fact no bands can play all their shows with all that stuff live because its ridiculously expensive and logistically impossible. Maybe a one off show here and there but even then it has to be a BIG band like Metallica for example for them to be able to afford that.
@@metalpuppet5798 Doc McGhee, manager of KISS recently said in an interview that Paul Stanley “Sings every track. He sings to it.” Ok, but why is there a vocal track for Paul to sing to in the first place?! Talk about a Freudian Slip. 🤣
i disagree. yes you wanna see a great production. but a live concert is supposed to be spontaneous and especially if youre in the front up close. you pay for those seats to see and WATCH the band perform and focus on the guitar playing and musicianship. at least I do...
Sorry guys. I have to agree with Eddie on this one. Why would I want to pay an expensive ticket to see a band pretending to play? And using prerecorded tracks that I would have on my pad?! If a band sucks now unlike they did years ago, they shouldn’t be playing anymore. There are plenty of bands that aren’t as good as they used to be. But they’re still generally good and better than other younger band bands in their prime. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I know Judas Priest isn’t using backing tracks and Rob Halford, last I checked, still sounds amazing.
There’s no right answer, as it’s personal choice. For me, I’m way more interested in a great show vs. true playing that sucks. For me, concerts are more like a movie than a baseball game.
Fans are tough even without obvious track use, the first 5 minutes of this video, the band mistakenly play HISTORIC VIDEO, thin, young, 1980 heros. Then when they show up on stage, the intro video proves they are getting the soft old wrinkled apple that has hair growing from it ! Guy says, 'they don't look like that now, huge gut on him' - not even mentioning the lack of hair. It's an outrage that fat singers don't use the risky ozem injections that guarantee fast weight loss. They have millions to make. BTW: Seinfeld leaves his shows within 20 seconds. No meet and greets are sold. Might be his Super young Wife's orders. Loverboy @ Pine Knob - Clarkston Mi 8/2/24 - Uncle Ghoulie Tv *I don't think keyboards are used to help Mike Reno, it just looked like it.
Say what you want to but if you want to go watch a bunch of fake karaoke Then pay you damn money and go but Eddie is right I don't know why y'all find that hard to believe or is it just for attention
By your words, if we want to go and watch a bunch of fake karaoke, that would make Eddie NOT right. Fun when you live in a world where people enjoy more than one option. Maybe you’ll get that some day!
