At the request of several people, I went back to the Honey Creek Road railroad crossing for a follow up video. CN 2522 and CN 5635 pull a northbound mixed freight up Canadian National's Waukesha Subdivision, past the new crossing signals. The 78.7 defect detector also gives another read-out, but identifies itself as CN instead of Wisconsin Central. This was filmed north of Honey Creek, Wisconsin.
Be sure to check out my other videos from this location:

Basically, yeah. It checks each car for overheated wheel bearings, sticking brakes, dragging equipment, excessive dimensions, etc. If there were any problems, it would give a count of how many defects there are and their location in the train based on the axel number from the front.

Thank you! I'm writing a novel, and one of my characters gets hit by a train (brutal. I know). My only difficulty was how fast the train would be going, and how much dialogue I could get through from hearing the train to impact. This video has definitely helped, especially with the angle. So thanks!

I agree! It is my most favorite location where Brenton has filmed his train videos and I have told him that. Sure wish I lived in Wisconsin since I would be going there often to see trains. 😎
@Brenton81

@Berqy123 A detector is a device that automatically checks the train for defects like hotboxes, sticking brakes, dragging equipment, etc. as it passes. A status message is then broadcast from it on the railroad's radio frequency once the train finishes going by. If there were any defects, it would specify what the defect is and give a location (axle number) on the train. The train would then stop and the problem would be checked out and corrected. 78.7 is a milepost number.

Woah! I hadn't heard anything about that. I know there's one or two crossings with the little lane seperation barriers on each side so people can't swerve through the lowered gates, but I wasn't aware it was a quiet zone.

These signals actually do have LEDs, but they're a different type than the other ones. These are ball LEDs. They're pretty intense when you're looking at them straight on, not so much from an angle though.

It's the message automatically broadcast from the defect detector. You can pick them up on a scanner that's tuned to the railroad's frequency.

@Saemar900 Detectors are installed by the railroad in different locations, trackside. You need a scanner to be able to hear them after a train passes.

@childofgod140 They're most commonly refered to as a "police scanner". There are all kinds of different brands. You can find them at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. or order one online. You program the railroad's radio frequencies into them and you can hear the radio conversations.
@Brenton81
@Brenton81 13 лет назад
@childofgod140 You can use a scanner to listen for trains, check the signals to see if something is coming, look down the tracks for a headlight.... lots of ways.

You're lucky. I have the Union Pacific Chicago-Milwaukee main a mile away from me but I can't see the trains from my house, I can only hear them. When CN bought Wisconsin Central, the tracks in this video went from about six trains a day to well over 20.

One of my FAVORITE locations in your videos and thanks again for making this VERY interesting video almost 8 years ago. I wonder what part of Wisconsin Honey Creek Road is located in and it is a LOVELY place to watch trains. I would love to see it in person someday (but NOT in the winter time, of course, for obvious reasons).
@Brenton81
@Brenton81 7 лет назад
This spot is in Southeastern Wisconsin, right off Highway 20, between Waterford and East Troy. The actual town of Honey Creek is just a little ways south of the crossing. (Heading down the road in the direction the camera is facing.)
@DougCeleste
@DougCeleste 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply and where this LOVELY crossing is at. My friend grew up in Whitewater which is 26 miles northwest of Honey Creek. And before you replied, I went online and found a Honey Creek Rd. in the Oshkosh area but obviously, it was not the same road as this road.

I always find it amusing that trolls make fun of other people's interests yet are completely oblivious to the fact they're more pathetic than anyone, spending their free time trolling videos. All you have to do is go on A-Ten Pilot's page and look at the one video he uploaded. It'll give you a pretty good idea of his mentality. His random capitalization of words in his attempted insult also lead me to believe he has a hard time grasping very basic skills, like elementary school punctuation.

Both signals with the gate mechs were up, the arms and lights hadn't been installed yet. so they weren't in service. I was standing almost directly next to the new signal in the first video. If you look in the upper right side of the screen, you can see a small part of the gate mech in the frame. In this video I was standing further back from the crossing.

I watched both this film and the first film from the same location... I noticed how in the other film the red flashing lights switch off just as the back of the train is passing whilst in this newer film the crossing has automatic half barriers which wait until the train has fully passed the crossing, plus a little longer, before raising and the lights stop flashing.

The closest I came to death was when I was 17 yrs old and my friends and I tried to outrun this train in the Windsor/Detroit underground tunnels. We hopped on to the locomotive, on to the front railing, and the engine was rocking back and fourth so bad that it threw my friend off onto the culvert, and I scraped the back of my leather jacket onto the cement wall of the tunnel; that's how close it was. The worst part was ending up in serious Detroit gang land when we eventually jumped off.. lol
