In this video we are machining a 1:6 scale cast aluminium M26 Pershing Turret.
The casting is made with the main features - we then need to machine flat surfaces, open up and tap various holes and add features.
In total there are around 30 planes that we need to machine - which is partly why the job takes around half an hour to complete.

It's cool what Armortek are able to produce with such a great CNC machines. I wish I had one in my work shop.

that's great! I used to work on a 3-axis NC, so it's nostalgic. 素晴らしい! 私も3軸のNCの仕事していたので懐かしいです。

How much does that turret weigh?

I’d guess. 25lbs

Less or no coolant please. Can’t see what’s happening.

Those feeds seem so slow for being on aluminum

A few reasons for that. It's a large hollow casting only being held from the underside, so feeds are toned down to not induce any unwanted harmonics. This is an unmanned operation so the tools need to last for the duration of the batch, whilst being able to handle any surprise extra features that may appear in any given casting.

@Sean Twig yes but theres ways around that, my machine caps at 8k but with a 5 flute carb i rough at 120 and finish pass at 60 holding a +.0005 -.0000 tolerance on less supported aluminum. I also find it hard to believe they are lights out on those parts, maybe let it run on lunch break or hit start as you walk out the doors but those arnt being auto loaded.

@tankkiller308 as I said, the feeds were intentionally reduced to protect the tools and by unmanned, I mean no operator nearby, not lights out APC loaded. I could easily have pushed it to achieve a significantly faster run time but its rather counterproductive if 5 parts in it finds an unwanted feature on the casting and destroys the cutter and potentially several proceeding tools as well.

@Sean Twig oh i do apologize, i didnt realize you were the actual machinist. I get why you said you had it turned down, but i didnt realize you were meaning you actually left the machine unattended (i just assumed you were some random joe assuming that's why). Are the castings pretty dirty (like flashing) that causes random unexpected stickouts?

@tankkiller308 these turrets were very well cast tbh, but you never know. Just have to work on the assumption there might be, and the operator will likely not spot it in advance if there was any issues.
