Katherine is the founder of Latent, an architecture and urbanism practice exploring the influence of design as small or as large as the context allows. Since founding her firm in 2010, Katherine and her firm have pursued projects at the bench, building and block scale to prototype new urban design systems to advance urban food access with Forty Acres Fresh Market, supported over 200 small businesses through Boombox, designed new community centers with Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago and created public space frameworks through co-founding Design Trust Chicago. She previously taught at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University.
Originally from Lima, Peru, Fabiola aims to enrich communities through her designs, mentorship, volunteer work, and equity efforts. Her empathetic approach to design focuses on learning the core values and core needs of the client from the get-go to be prepared to guide and support them throughout the entire architectural process. At Wheeler Kearns Architects, she has led various educational and community-focused projects that serve communities in need. As an
immigrant, she recognizes the importance of guidance and representation, which are the main
drivers of her passion for mentorship. She is an active mentor in many different organizations, such as Big Brother Big Sisters, Ace Mentorship and Arquitina.
Emmanuel "Manny" enjoys creating spaces that amplify communal spirit and bold visions. His work has included the North Lawndale Employment Network headquarters-a nonprofit that provides a second chance for the formerly incarcerated-as well as the adaptive reuse of the Chapel of St. Joseph. He also is leading the completion of Common Pantry’s
adaptive reuse project, which will turn a former kitchen space into Chicago’s oldest pantry’s new home. Manny is committed to elevating Latinos in architecture locally and nationally, serving as President of Arquitectos-The Society of Hispanic Professional Architects in Chicago. Under his leadership, Arquitectos is strengthening the diversity of the profession through annual fundraisers, scholarship awards, advocacy before AIA and NCARB boards, and the annual Arquitectos Colectivos Symposium.
