CNN: Dambisa Moyo & Jacqueline Novogratz debate the efficacy of foreign aid 

I really admire Dambrisa's perspective. She wants to hold the elected officials accountable to their populations. Right now Africa is on the brink of amazing developments that we can't deny in West anymore and it looks like all their asking is for us to "back off".

Bono is a celebrity and his attention to Africa is not altruistic. It is also offensive because celebrities should not be involved with African economies and foreign policy. It is offensive to Africans that these white liberal celebrities feel they have a right to be involved in African issues.

Trade not AID......

I agree with Dambisa she is a Zambian woman she knows the problems in Zambia and on the African continent. I think it is EASY for foreigners to state they are helping the African continent but it is a form of racism and paternalism. The western world KEEPS the African continent poor. The protectionist policies of the western world and the support African dictators have from western governments is the real problem. The western world wants to keep Africa poor in order to acquire revenue from debts

Dambisa got it spot on. Africa has become too dependent on aid to a point where African governments have become lazy and incorporate it in their annual budgets. Most of the Aid is also 'Pity Aid' as its not channeled to productive uses and ends only for consumption. Dambisa clearly points out that Africa needs Aid which is time specific annd will lead to self-sustainability and productivity.

why is it painful for them to remove their aid .we don't want it

They could potentially hurt people who make shoes in an area if everyone in the area gets shoes for free. I asked toms shoes and this was their reply "Awesome question, actually. TOMS gives shoes through Giving Partners by identifying communities that will benefit the most from shoes based on economic health and educational needs, taking into consideration area where local businesses will not be negatively affected."

Novogratz' arguments seemed quite strong at certain times. Though her slightly fake sounding, almost condescending, outreaches weakens her cause. Both are on the right side of the fence though. It seems to me government aid is more of a valid issue. Oh and I love Moyos finishing remarks. Especially the part about aid in the end being about pity, and not being the kind of demanding and transparent capital that we need. You can just see Zakaria smiling, the point is so well made.

At best foreign aid is subsidizing poverty out of pity, at worst it’s meant to keep Africans in poverty. You can’t do something like foreign aid as long as humanity has done it without at least occasionally considering the results, no matter how blissfully ignorant you may be to your own policies your are so zealous for, sooner or later you gotta take stock of your actions and when you do, one question comes to mind, “Are we the baddies?”

Who is breaking all this systems mentioned here. How can billions of $ be stolen and then tell us about coditional aid? What is this aid really for? If you want to send aid here, send the money and don't come here Oto dictate the solutions. Stay in your countries and we will find our own solutions without interference.

oh my apologies i wasnt aware of that. What makes me frustrated is that Africa's the richs continent on this planet yet its the poorest. Western countries need to stop funding dictators and Africans need to realize that they have no one to help them but thmeselve.

I honestly think that we need to balance what is Aid and not Aid in Africa. I have been following Dambisa Moyo debates on Dead Aid recently and just need to comment on certain of her ideas. Her recent debate with Jacqueline Novogratz made me think that she hasnt got the Full picture of what is really going on in Africa, or simply she is not expressing them very well.

Dearest Jacquline, You are so nice person but I think you got very powerful friends behind your project. because it is impossible without that kind of support to work in chaotic countries like Kenya, Pakistan etc. For ex. Margaret Hassan didnt got protection and her destiny was awful, unfortunately
