Truth is... Jordan is transcending Basketball itself. I think the case can be made he is the GOAT in any sport... People say "he is the michael jordan of"... .. ..
Wrong. Houdini in magic. Gretzky in hockey. Ali in boxing. Phelps in swimming. All lead in their field more than Michael lead basketball. There is no 2nd place to those guys. The Labron vs jordon argument. Or Jordan vs Kobe is at least and augment. Who’s the 2nd best swimmer and how far behind Phelps is he? Way way way further than Kobe is behind mike. Sorry mike was the greatest basketball player. Gretzky records are off the chart compared to Jordan. And Ali is the greatest . Duh
Before MJ had played a single NBA game, Bobby Knight said Jordan was the best basketball player he’d ever seen. Remember, MJ led college kids to an Olympic Gold medal and that team beat the NBA All-Stars TWICE
They were always college kids up until '92 when they let pros compete at the Olympic Games for the first time. And guess what? By 1984 they won all of them but 2 times ('72 and '80): they ended with the silver medal in 1972 and in 1980 they boycotted the 'soviet games' and didn´t participate. So, winning the gold medal at that time with college kids was nothing out the norm.
@@jackbombay1423 No way 😱 They didn’t allow American pros until the team coined “The Dream Team?” (that’s called sarcasm btw). You’re making my point for me kid. In 1980, the US didn’t even medal. In 1988, the US placed 3rd. But in 1984, they didn’t lose a game in the Olympics and I watched the NBA team get smoked twice by a team led by some kid who they couldn’t contain named Michael Jordan. That was the larger point if you’d have kept reading instead of thinking you’re somehow teaching me something here. A team of NBA All-Stars with prime Bird, prime McHale, Parish, Isaiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre…didn’t just lose - they got their asses whipped. I remember bc I was alive and watched it live. I’m 49 years old and ran a sports cards and collectibles shop for 20 years. That shop is all online now. I know the game of basketball. It’s my job to know seeing as basketball 🏀 and football 🏈 are my top sellers. Anything else you’d like to add to a topic I’d bet money (and lots of it) that I know more about than you?
@@KinnereyB Which point did you make? Did you read me? In the 1980 they didn´t PARTICIPATE. And before that whey WON every single one of them except for the '72 in a very controversial last shot that gave them the first loss. Go back to your shop. And for the record, they were 63-0 up until that controversial defeat at '72 with all 'college kids' as you mentioned. So, yes, winning the gold medal with a bunch of kids was the norm back these days, kid.
@@jackbombay1423 There was still a team that was put together in 1980 smart guy. They went 4-1 in preparation for the Olympics, only losing to the NBA team they scrimmaged. That was routine…and my point. Isiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman, Sam Bowie, Alton Lister, Rodney McCray, Darnell Valentine, Buck Williams were all on the squad. Look it up like you had to do every other thing you think you’re teaching me. The POINT is that every 4 years, we had our college best scrimmage the NBA’s best in preparation for the Olympics. The only time the NBA lost was in 1984, and they lost twice. Jordan was the best player on the court. That’s the point. Bobby Knight who knew the game better than both of us put together said he was the best he’d ever seen before he stepped foot on an NBA floor. That’s the point. I’m proud of you for catching the intended sarcasm- Jimmy Carter was Biden before Biden. It doesn’t change the fact that a team was still prepped and ready and went 4-1 preparing for games they never went to. You learn something new every day. And my shop is online - so I’m in it here in bed making money in my sleep. Good night
My 7 year old nephew was flying to Denver to visit his dads family. He sat next to Bob Knight on the plane. My nephew said, “ my granny likes you a lot but my paw paw doesn’t like you at all.” Coach said, “where do they live?” He answered, “Kentucky.” Coach laughed and said, “i’ll take 50% approval rating from there any day.” This Kentucky boy hates losing to Indiana but Coach is a class act.
Reminds me of Joey telling Murdock how his father said Kareem Abdul-Jabar never got back on defense. I'd put my $ on Murdock keeping his cool with Joey before I'd ever bet on Knight.
Coach Knight told his friend Stu Inman, the General Manager of the Portland Trailblazers to draft Jordan over Sam Bowie in 1984. Inman told Knight .. 'But, I need a Center'. Knight's response .. 'Well, play Jordan at Center'. Jordan fell to number 3, and the Chicago Bulls picked him up. Rest is history!
LOVE this story. I can easily picture Jordan's face & hear him saying every word, LMBO. Love you Coach Knight & Jordan, you're both legends. You're loved & missed, Coach 💕
I love the connection and understanding from Jordan, that the coach has to go after him for the sake of the team and going along with it. He knows what has to be done and how it's being done and doesn't feel to big for it.
Coach Knight was one of a kind. Strategic, tough, seasoned and funny at the right times. Knight knew how to push his players to be better. You could not underestimate Coach Knight.
For the younger viewers out there, the last NCAA men's team to go undefeated and win the National Championship was the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers coached by the General Bob Knight
And he thinks his '75 team was even better. Injuries hurt that squad. Scott May's broken arm allowed Kentucky to win the region. Hoosiers were a great, great team those two seasons, one of the best rosters in NCAA history, with maybe the best backcourt ever.
Of all the Jordan nob slobbery, knight by far adds the most credibility. Not known to over hype or over celebrate, he almost falls out of his shoes when he talks about Jordan. And he called it before he ever played in the nba. A considerable margin, yes.
Bobby Knight was one of the most straight shooters to ever come out of the woodwork in Sports HISTORY. When dude says he seen the greatest player ever............before he even went professional...........it's as genuine as it gets. Can u blame Knight for feeling that way? Jordan not only proved him right, but proved the world wrong about athletes not being bigger than the brand. He IS the brand now.
In his book, Knight said to the team USA before a game vs a scrub team: "I want this game over 5 minutes into the game, 20 point lead" Jordan takes over the game, Jordan says to Knight: "Sorry, coach, I didn't mean to disappoint you, we did it 1 minute early" Knight looks up the scoreboard 20 point lead in 4 minutes.
I went to IU in the early 90s. He would give these talks to students for free. Inspirational, funny, motivating. Never used any notes - just spoke off the cuff. He was/is an incredible talent. Hail to old IU!
he had an incredible memory. most lose it by age 60, Knight didn't lose his till the age of 70. He also was an ESPN commentator well into his 60's when most are resting on a beach in Florida sipping on a cocktail trying to remember what they were doing an hour ago.
Coach Knight is missed, cherished, and well respected here in Indiana. My grandparents and dad just thought the world of him. My personalized and autographed ball from Coach is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Thank u Coach Knight for being an incredible coach in basketball and life. Even when u had to correct some of us middle schoolers at camp. 🙂God bless u Coach.
I went to Bob Knight basketball camp in 1980 when I was 16. Middle of the summer and 95 degrees every day. My HS coach was there too with his two young boys. One day, Bob was giving a talk in the gym and makes an off hand comment something like “if you can find me a better point guard than Isaiah Thomas, it’ll snow a foot tomorrow.” Later that night at dinner the two boys were insisting their dad find a way to get winter coats. Dad says “it’s 95 degrees out, why in the world would you want winter coats?” They both responded in earnest “Bob Knight said it’s going to snow a foot tomorrow”. I’ve never seen anyone command a room like the general.
@@jeffboy13 Bleacher Report has Magic as best point guard of all time and 6th best player of all time. Thomas is 7th and 30th. Sounds about right to me.
Knight was a better sports commentator than a coach. Because he couldn't strangle his fellow commentators on national TV like he did his players at practice.
@@kylemichaelsen7374We all have moments that we’d like to forget. Remember individuals for their heart, contributions and growth and less for their moments of weakness!
@@scotthartig4521 I wonder what Knight felt about Len Bias. He was as good at the time. I’m a die hard MJ fan but just curious what college coaches thought of Bias.
Hakeem was just as good, maybe better.. Most dominant 94 foot player who ever played, without question.. Score, defend, protect the rim, run the floor, finish, rebound and outlet pass to start the best fast break I ever saw.. Everything, everywhere..
@@subutaiscipio4318 He didn't say jumping and running. He said the It Factor. Bird was stronger, bigger, better rebounder, better clutch, better jump shooter, better 3-point shooter, better passer.
@@costumeninja1914 He didn't say It factor. He said it, referring to the traits mentioned in the first post. MJ was a better overall player than Bird. He was faster and could jump higher and was better at the 2 key qualities; He was way better at scoring and way way better at stopping people from scoring. Jordan was stronger for his size and ws more durable. Jordan was by far the better player so i am not sure what you hoped to accomplish by listing Bird's qualities. No contest between those 2.
“The first night Larry played against him - I knew he (Jordan) was good - but Larry said, he said to me, he said, ‘That guy is gonna be the greatest player ever, you watch,'” Boston Globe beat reporter Dan Shaughnessy told Damon Amendolara
@@patrickgray5633 yes mr. Knight coach Knight how does it feel to get beat by Purdue on your home floor well Connie is sort of like rape I couldn't do anything about it so I just laid back and enjoyed it 😆😆😆😆😆
Not even close….Bob Knight never took a bag of money to win or paid players to win. That movie was nothing close to Bob Knight. It may compare some in regards to temperament but it’s not that close in terms of how he was in regards to his ethical conduct.
Great coaching mind, used intellectually sound fundamentals to teach his players & has seen the best at their craft. Understands Psychology, demands production & his players are better off in Life after Coach Knight. Thanks & big smile!
1980, Isiah Thomas = Played college ball for Bob Knight 1984, Bob Knight: " _MJ is the best player I've ever seen_ " 1988, Isiah Thomas = Played pro ball for Chuck Daly (and won 2 chips) 1992, Chuck Daley: " _MJ doesn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Oh, well, I'll take this coaching gig_ " ...the *rivalry* continues...
@@allworld8052 Agh; I think you might've misread my paraphrased quote: 1992, Chuck Daly: " _MJ doesn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Oh, well, I'll [still] take this coaching gig_ " I'm not saying that Daly explicitly stated that he didn't want Isiah on the Dream Team. Instead, I'm saying that Daly was *ok* with coaching a team that explicitly excluded Isiah. A team led by Isiah's chief rival (Jordan). A team leader who stipulated Isiah's exclusion. That's an extra twist to a tightly-bound rivalry.
It was after the draft but before his first season. Had the draft come after the Olympics the Bulls might not have gotten the pick (at least that what Rod Thorn said)
He implored the Portland GM to draft Jordan with their second overall pick. The GM told Knight he needed a center (he ended up famously drafting ce ter Sam Bowie). Knight told him to draft Jordan and play him at center.
That's right, I was at Dick Bennett's Basketball camp, asked Coach Bennett How Teri Porter was doing in Olympics tryouts that summer. Teri Porter had the flu and was picked as one of the Olympic alternates. UWSP div.3 , Teri Porter played some good ball for Portland against Jordan's Bulls, some great battles. I was going into my Senior of Highschool, I have never seen anyone play which such intensity as Jordan, and never seen anyone Coach with more intensity than Knight. The Greatest are often not liked.. I liked Coach Bennet, his Son coaches Virginia, Toney. Good Folks... Better Luck next yr. Coach Bennett.
Bobby Knight forgot about Wilt! Still, the Trailblazers should have listened to him...imagine Drexler and Jordan together! This is my favorite story about MJ. A legendary coach calls you the best and then desperately tries to find something wrong with you and can only come up with needing to set more screens. 😂😂😂❤🏀
MJ is still the best modern era player in my lifetime. Larry Bird is up there too. MJ soared when there was no 3 point line and physical hand checking was allowed. Plus his persona off the court speaks for itself.
Never heard of that Jordan story, and I thought I heard at least most of it by now. RIP Coach Knight. I would love to hear more on how he cut Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and John Stockton from the Olympic Team as well.
Knight deserves credit for realizing Jordan's ability in college, but he was the #3 pick in the draft. It's not as if people didn't universally expect him to be an elite perennial all-star type player. He just wasn't seen as an all time great the way Bob saw him.
Kobe Bryant 13th pick. He wasn't even in the all rookie team of that year. Next year he shot 4 airballs at the end of the 4th quarter and overtime in game 5 vs Jazz in the playoffs. Who would have thought he was going to be the best western conference player of all time. Not me.
@@Trancymind the all rookie team doesn't matter. Especially back then before advanced analytics the voters were clueless. He only played 15 min a game that season so of course his stats aren't going to look that good. Per minute, though, his rookie performance was extremely impressive (especially for an 18 year old). Also, one playoff game doesn't matter. Judge players based on their overall skill level and their entire season performance over the last three seasons relative to their age. Kobe's first two seasons were excellent considering he was 18 and 19. Kobe was definitely an elite prospect coming out of high school. It's just teams foolishly thought picking kids with no college experience was too risky. People definitely saw Kobe as having elite potential.
@@Asshat237 What I'm trying to say is Kobe had low expectations in general including me during that time. I was a Laker fan from 1986 till 2018. Kevin Garnett had way more elite potential than Kobe believe it or not. Both were drafted out of high school. How many NBA players have won at least 5 NBA championships with at least 1 MVP award picked 13th pick or higher? Nobody.
@@Trancymind He was picked 13th because teams were not ready to pick high school players. It was not because of his talent. Calipari, who was the head coach of the Nets at the time, wanted to take him with their pick at #8. I can't recall the specific reason he has given for why the GM didn't agree with him. I'm gonna look it up
He really knew what he was talking about. That's why in the 1984 NBA draft, he told the Portland trail Blazers owner to pick Michael Jordan and didn't follow Bobby's advice and the rest is history
Im old enough to have seen this man coach his entire career...it is simply amazing that this gentleman calls himself a 'flexible' leader...excuse me while i throw up a little bit in my mouth...
I played under a coach who was a hard ass but fair in the 70s. Coach Knight was not for everyone but he made sure you went to class and graduated. There is n denying he was a trend setter as a Coach in his philosophy of the game.
Jordan's actual stat line for the whole game and I'm not trolling. You can look it up: Points 20 Rebounds 1 Assists 2 The whole tournament he never had more than 3 assists or 4 rebounds in a game. This story is completely fabricated or somehow Knight confused it with some practice game. This never happened in the 84 Olympics.
I looked up the stats and you are correct. Still makes a great story. Too bad about his temper, he may have been the 2nd or 3rd greatest of all time, John Wooden being first. Maybe Coach K gets 2nd. He learned how to Coach working as an assistant under Knight at IU.
Prepare for LIFE through the Education of Basketball..Prepare to be your best is the education I got from Coach. Just ask Micheal..Be like Mike..I LOVE you both...Prepare yourself to achieve your best at anything...Be like "KNIGHT"!!!
It was against spain in 80's so basically a d3 basketball team. Though there is a theory that the dream team is the reason for European basketball taking off...roughly 18 years after they played in europe..if you get my meaning.
11 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things and keep the ordinances as I have delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prayeth or prophesieth, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. 5 But every woman who prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head, for that is one and the same as if she were shaven. 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, inasmuch as he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. 10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it comely that a woman should pray unto God uncovered? 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given her for a covering. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. 17 Now in this I declare unto you that I praise you not: that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that those who are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When ye therefore come together into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s Supper. 21 For in eating, every one taketh his own supper ahead of another, and one is hungry and another is drunken. 22 What? Have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? Or despise ye the church of God, and shame those who have not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I praise you not! 23 For I have received from the Lord that which also I delivered unto you: that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner also He took the cup when He had supped, saying, “This cup is the new testament in My blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death until He come. 27 Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and then let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. 33 Therefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. 34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home, that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
