CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The team shoulders the remaining drills assigned by Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) to Timo (Rick Gonzalez) in order to help him earn back his spot on the roster.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there's more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him -- the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond cagers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more -- to teach the boys to respect themselves and one another, and that they must excel in the classroom as well as in the gymnasium. Under Carter's guidance, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title a genuine possibility. However, when Carter learns that a number of his players have let their grade point averages slip below 2.3, as mandated in a contract he entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team out of the gym and send them into study hall until their marks improve. Carter's plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of whom are not sympathetic to Carter's belief that his players must have goals beyond college ball or the NBA. Coach Carter also features Rob Brown and Rick Gonzalez as members of the team, and R&B diva Ashanti in her film debut as the girlfriend of one of Carter's players.

I've done some calculations. Based off of a clip of Mr. Cruz doing pushups, he does roughly one every second. 2500 pushups, minimum 2500 seconds, or 41.67 minutes. Now the suicides. The average basketball court is 28.6512 meters long, and the distance to the foul line is 5.7912 meters. This would mean a total running distance of 71.628 meters per suicide. He is tasked to do 1000 suicides, so, in total, he would run 71,628 meters. If the average jogging speed is 2.2352 meters per second, it would take him a total of 160,102.9056 seconds to do the suicides. That's 1.85304289 days of continuous running. I don't know what day he was given this task, but assuming the basketball period is 1 hour, it would take 44.4730293 days to complete it, taking him long past Friday. Taking into account that this is the absolute minimum amount of time it would take him, as we are not considering the effects that fatigue would have on his speed or the amount of time it would take him to stop and turn around during the suicides, Coach Carter was correct in saying that Mr. Cruz’s task is impossible. Edit: My calculations here are wrong. As I posted this three years ago, I can't really be bothered to fix the mistake. Feel free to try and find it for yourself, or just read the responses to this comment in which somebody already pointed it out.
@alpha-omega74

Jesse Segel You could say he came in on Monday and wanted to be on the team and had to do all that. When you mentioned about practice being an hour, it not possible to cover all offense, defense, and conditioning in that time span. Normally practice before the first game would be at least 2 hours and 30 minutes or 3 hours depending on the pace. So for 2500 push ups and 1000 suicides for one whole 2:30:00 practice. He could probably have done 500 push ups a day and 200 suicides a day. But again it depends how good of shape you're in and how motivated are you to finish the numbers.

Yet he tries
@ryanoelerich6311
@ryanoelerich6311 5 лет назад
Yet he never walks out, never gets mad or gives up, he gives it everything he has, even though he knows it is not enough, the team supports him 100%, and he pushes himself even harder. Even though Carter may think he is not good enough he has the pure drive, unending hunger to grow, dedication to the team, and willingness to work as a team and the ability to unite a team as one through his sheer persistence. He has the unlimited drive to grow and willingness to help the team grow, What Is a good team without the ability to help their weakest link, if that weakest link is truly willing to give 110% he won't stay the weakest, and his growth will spark growth in the team as a whole. As the "weakest link" gets better it will trigger a "competitive spark" in everyone, "My brother has gotten way better I cant afford to slack off." And the team will grow as a whole, you will always have a "weak link" but as they get better the entire team will follow.

I’ve been in a similar spot as timo , first year of wrestling in middle/ high school. Doing conditioning drills and me being over weight I would lag behind , so when the rest of the team finished I still had 20 suicides left of my workout and as I finish my first one with everyone watching me , including my older brother , the team captain stands up and starts running with me matching my pace and doing it with me. Then his co captains come out and join me too , then the seniors , then the juniors , then the rest of varsity, then the rest of the jv. It’s moments like that that build a team , I wrestled all four years after that and even when I wanted to quit when it became too tough, I knew my team was there beside me.

It’s crazy because only a team and an army can replicate this level of love to another man. The fact that the team realized that he gave everything he could and he fell short powered them to help him succeed. The love and bond that teams create is indescribable. The willingness to give up your own sweat and tears to help your teammate succeed is absolutely shown in this clip. I’ve ran poles, suicides, sprints and everything under the blazing sun for a team. And with every step and drop of sweat it makes you realize that a group of men once channeled and disciplined can achieve anything. I was an undersized offensive and defensive lineman and still I ran a sub 6 min mile because my team needed me to play both ways. Something about competition and team work truly brings out the best in a man. I’m thankful I was given the opportunity to play sports competitively. Without it I don’t know what I would have made of myself

This was how the team told the coach they considered Cruz a part of their team. Carter turned Cruz away and they overruled his decision, but they did it in a manner that was respectable. This scene displayed a phenomenal stage of growth for the players.

After High School Cruz went off to Harrison University where he joined a fraternity with Frank the Tank, Mitch Martin, and Blue. Coach Carter did a wonderful preparing him for college.

It's so important for kids to do something competitive or anything team based where you meet people because the well being of others start to matter. Kids indoors all the time or online all the time.
