I always remember one mk1 which (don't ask me the number) which would often have been at the front of a rake and whenever I would go to window hang out of it, the window would fly up and smack me hard in the bottom on the face and throwing my head into window frame. It caught me out a couple of times before I learnt to look out for the window with a bit of splatted red paint on it (I'm 95% sure it's not blood from people being hit by it). Whenever I come across it now, I make sure to hold it in place. Always a bit of fun :D. Thinking about it, it's got to have been possibly as long as a year since I last saw it, maybe some works been done. You've got to appreciate the work put in by the carriage dept. Everyone (myself included mostly) just sees all the work going into the locos, but just as much time and effort is put into the things we are riding in. :)

Is there any reason for not changing the gearing on the dynamo pulleys to charge at lower speeds, given that we run at 25mph rather than the 60+ they were originally designed for?

Extremely interesting and well presented but is there a real need for the plinky plonky music

Can someone please explain (or give me a video link) how the auto / buckeye coupler is lifted into place? I know these are heavy, so it can't be altogether that easy... P.S: I also remember Flying Scotsman losing his train when on a parallel run / race with Australian loco 3801 way back in 1989!!!

Hi, pause the video at 2:02. Essentially you take the horizontal pin out, lift the buckeye up by hand (yes it's heavy!), and put the pin back in. The pin will sit on the inside of the draw hook which will hold the buckeye up. To open the claw you pull the chain on the right. It'll lock automatically when coupled which you'll see & hear in the next clip

@@WillStratford quick query about why a screwlink coupling is used on the loco instead of a buckeye. Surely it would make sense to have the same system across all of them.
@WillStratford
@WillStratford 4 года назад
@@alecharwood9154 Not sure on that one. Some locomotives did have them fitted e.g. A4s on the tender. My best guess is that screw link was universal so easier to work with

@@WillStratford There is also a lever that goes through the hole in the buckeye and makes it easier to lift the buckeye into the raised position, one of the checks i had to do, was to measure the opening on the claw, where the coupler would open and close, and to pull the chain to ensure the jaws opened fully, this was done as part of the 18 monthly exam
