I know Andrea is hyperactive and ignorant, but the coaching here is also pretty trash. Correcting terminology that was used correctly more than once and antagonizing the student are two major red flags. Frame the video around Andrea if that's easier to you, but maybe Naroditsky and Hammer could coach you on coaching before you try this again.

Andrea has a lot of sympathy for isolated pawns because she realizes how hard it is when your sister goes off to college and leaves you with _nobody to play with!_ That someone might choose that situation voluntarily is not something she wants to think about.

This was the 25th game of the 1927 championship match between Capablanca and Alekhine. The move actually played by Alekhine was Bg4, and Dina gives a nice explanation of the ideas in the position. Capablanca then maneuvered his knight to c5, and an interesting nuance is that Alekhine played the not-so-obvious move Rc7 both to protect the pawn on b7 and also so that after the trade of bishops on g6 Black's queen is not stuck defending both the knight on d7 and the pawn on g6. Dina is an excellent teacher, and this was a great choice of a game to analyze. Alekhine, at the time leading by two games in the match, managed to draw this game en route to winning the world championship.

Today I learned that Alekhine played Kasparov :D But in all honesty...Andrea's whole repertoire of 'content' is basically around chess so I would assume she knew atleast the basics...Meaning who have been world champions and atleast roughly when. It's basic commong knowledge that Steinitz was the first champion who was then followed by Lasker, Capablanca and then Alekhine.

I think you got it wrong. According to wikipedia, an isolated pawn is a pawn that has no friendly pawn on an adjacent file. That is all. It doesnt say "isolated pawn is the one that is on the open file and it cannot move forward because there is opponent pawn", whatever that means. 🤔

I think the main difference we should understand from what dina said was that even tho you could technically call both an isolated pawn, one of them is actually easier to attack and to win. And there's where the difference between an isolated pawn and an isolated pawn on an open/semi open file is important.
@psychohist
@psychohist Год назад
I think maybe the cognate Russian term has Dina's meaning. In the US, a pawn can be isolated and passed - be two things at the same time, as Dina puts it.
@eklektikTubb
@eklektikTubb Год назад
@@arrowofkira5658 Yes, but isolated pawn on an open file is also something that wikipedia disagree with. It says "An open file in chess is a file with NO PAWNS of either color on it." Obviously, there cannot be an isolated pawn on file with no pawns on it. As for semi open-file, that is defined as a file with pawns of only one color. Dina's sentence "isolated pawn is the one that is on the open (or semi-open) file and it cannot move forward because THERE IS OPPONENT´S pawn" doesnt make sense either, because one color literally means there is NO opponent´s pawn on that file.

And yes Andrea is correct on naming, as we use the same name for them all, and differ a good one from a bad one with add that exact adjective to it "strong/weak" "good/bad" while Dina's chess-school seem to prefer to differ a good version against a bad one directly in the name. Maybe as just an example she would like a name such as "two bishops" when it closed position or they just not good & "bishop pair" when it a good thing to have them.

Isn't g6 followed by Bf5 faster? The only problem is Kh4 directly after g6. Thing is that he can do the same with this Bg4, Bh5, Bg6 idea..... if white goes Kh4 in first two moves he threatens to exchange with Kxg6 and wins the f7 pawn in the process. Oh but g5 after Kh4, Kf5, Qe6, Kg3 and still Bg6. You really calculate both options in a matter of seconds? Amazing.
