It’s kind of breaks me a little bit seeing people here say that the 2021 restoration is better when Historian had to merge 2 copies together to get something passable, with little to no blue and green in both prints to work with, is better than the new restoration, which had most of the color there to begin with. All these shots here showcase the blue and green that’s supposed to be there on the new restoration for every scene while the old one is very “mushy” with scenes being very inconsistent in colors since he had to do corrections on every scene one by one, getting as much color as possible, and repeat for the next scene since the colors wouldn’t look right compared to previous scene, if that makes any sense. TLDR; the new restoration is pretty much better in every way color wise due to a better print being used
I think it's because of contrast. The newer version is objectively better as it has more data but because it isn't so bright it seems worse from afar. Especially watching from phone. Someone needs to play with curves in the new one
The contrast is awful mate. Every color has been given a blue filter. Even colors that shouldn't have blue have blue on it. That's probably why. There is no instance of pure black in the 2024 restoration at all. Even during the ending card. Ofc people aren't going to prefer it.
i prefer the old one because doesnt look as washed out to me. the new one just looks tinted. but its cool they tried to restore ancient media so im not shitting on them or anything.
The scene at 0:23 already shows that the new restoration is better. Ask yourself why would they intend for the princes whole face to blend into a pitch black background. I remember back then all I saw was eyes and a mouth now you can easily make out his whole face which definitely was what we were supposed to see.
The completely psychotic thing is that this cartoon was created to /increase black representation/ in cartoons. The reason it got made in the first place is because the director got approached by a group of black actors complaining about the lack of black characters in cartoons, and they went on voice every black character in it (the remaining characters, like the worm, were voiced by Mel Blanc). This is not to say it was uncontroversial at the time: white America didn't give a shit, but the NAACP were not at all happy about it (unsurprisingly).
I don't see it as psychotic. it simply shows a very simple truth. trying to get forced representation is silly and leads to silly things. If you want to see more of something you are probably gonna have to make more of it via your money or your efforts. And despite all of that it doesn't mean it will be something everyone else wants to see.
It's almost like the animator said "Okay, you want more black representation in cartoons? Bet, I got you..." And just let the bigotry command the ink and paint on the panels. But, it's a product of its time. All we can do is learning from it and keep it moving. 💯
Ironically, this was made in the first place because Bob Clampett made this because an all black cast of a musical asked him why there weren’t any Warner Bros cartoons with black characters. That group of black cast members helped him make the cartoon and did all the voices. It was never meant to be racist, but something that black people wanted Warner Bros to make.
@@DragongodZenos I made it the fuck up. (All jokes aside, I do remember seeing this same info somewhere. So take it with a grain of salt until you research it.)
@@leedunkin3338 Not really, there are hundreds of cartoons from this era that look exactly the same, don't see why you think they were inspired by this one. They could've been, but there's an equal chance they weren't
I like each side for different scenes! It kept going back and forth what I liked from beginning to end. I love this one, lol, thank you for bringing it to us, I patreoned it from you before
Most of the cast were black actually: Vivian Dandridge: So White Ruby Dandridge: The Queen Leo Watson: Prince Chawmin Lilian Randolph: The mom in the beginning of the short
All this restoration work and STILL no idea when or if the entire thing will be officially released! 🤬 Personally, I doubt it ever will be. Would be much more interested to see a restoration of Goldie Locks And The Jivin' Bears.
Last I checked, I think Warner still issues copyright take downs for most of the Censored 11 (except Jungle Jitters and the Elmer Fudd remake) But that was years ago
unironically, it was an idea of a black person (duke Ellington). The boondocks series is a satirical parody of black culture, and I view it in the same context.
Like it or not, those 11 cartoons are an important part of animation history. For historical purposes, they deserve an official release for adult collectors.
@@aaronsarchive82 and they weren't even considered bad when released. Some of the Jazz Musicians of the day (specifically Fats Weller) and others in the NYC area had a good laugh over them...because these were understood to be jabs at how silly the old ideas were and even back in the early days WB was seen as better than Disney because of their creative freedom being similar to what we would come to know eventually as the style of Tiny Toons and 🎵"Animaniacs...those are the facts!"🎵 Although there were still some things that the "Hayes Office wouldn't let"...said Babbit.
I can tell the differences between the 21 and 24 restoration by looking at this scene at 0:36 . The walls in the 21 restoration to me and (some others) looked a little pink, in the 24 restoration, the walls have been lighter blued. Nice restoration, overall, nothing to bad about it.
@@filozof90 it was made directly after Disney made their version of Snow White with the mind-set that it was cracking jokes on Disney first, the African-Americans of the day also understood this at the time, because WB's favorite game has always been trolling Disney since they both opened their doors...and some jazz parodies. This is also the only one of the Censored 11 that ever gets any exposure due to it being the most popular short and it's trolling Disney is more obvious here. Not to mention this design of So' White is later modified into Mary Melody (😂) on Tiny Toons.
I don’t think they were trying to be offensive. I think they meant well and truly wanted to make an inclusive version of Snow White but just did it in poor taste. Plus people back then didn’t get offended like we do, they had to deal with real Shiite like the Great Depression and wars.
1:06 Here I realized that Coal Black's actual name is literally *"Soo White"* and despite not seeing anything white (unless It's a refference to either her *slightly* lighter tone, or the fact that in order to be pretty she's the only one who looks like a normal human being) in her I still laughted my ass off in that moment
"Leon Schlesinger was born to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1884." just a random part of the producer's biography. for y'all to know
@@HermitKing731 I mean they were shameless enough to drop a Mufasa trailer yesterday despite the Lion King remake’s reception so… And I’d rather them release it and it being bad rather than deleting it when the work is almost done. Screw you Warner Bros! I will never forgive you that.
@@c0mpu73rguy You don't seem to understand how much of a disaster this snow white remake is getting to be. It hasn't come out and people are hating on it. And on the actress playing snow white.
@@HermitKing731 Which is dumb since it haven’t come out yet. I mean it obviously won’t be good but still… And again, I’d rather have it released and be terrible rather than the opposite. At worst, we will be able to make fun of it and racists will act like the manchild they are like always instead of just ignoring it like the rest of us (I seriously believe that these morons are actually the audience Disney aims at with these remakes now, never underestimate the power of hate watching).
Its kind of funny how "So White" is the only one that isnt a blatant caricature, I guess sense she was meant to be eye candy they didnt go all the way with it like they did the others lol.
I like and hate how much of a difference it makes because the blue does not make it feel good on many different things but the colors are definitely more balanced for the 24 version as the 21 version I prefer in general because I get to see it have color and life in most of the scenes that have vibrant colors like the apple or tires in the beginning. Overall, 24 is better at mixing colors into one balance as the 21 is better at more standout pop to ones that are alone. The best since to look for that is the end with the fire
I'm not referring to the uploader, but I want to clarify that this is an extremely racist portrayal of African Americans. Not just in the 21st century, but especially for the 20th century African Americans. In the original footage, the seven dwarfs talk about how they're 'going to war,' and wear ww1 helmets while holding rifles. The reason why they drew them like this was most likely because the cartoon was released in 1943. During WW2 many African Americans faced segregation and were treated as second-class class-citizens. They were most likely cooks, or mechanics, but not soldiers. This cartoon reinforces the idea that Black's couldn't become infantry. In the original cartoon, they're found to be sleeping while Coal Black takes the apple and they only find out that she'd been tricked right after she had been poisoned. This is also likely to be spite from the first World War, as returning African Americans faced the same treatment as they did when they left, leading to riots of Red Summer of 1919. It might be funny to watch, but it is disturbing.
Um…. No. Look at most of the other loony tune cartoons from this era. The older World War I style helmets were commonly used throughout their cartoons and in a large amount of propaganda posters. Many units in the early part of the war were using older issue equipment in tandem with newer equipment.
@@pneumon6990, yes because you have to make the comparison to other cartoons before making such a statement. The old Doe-Boy Helmet was simply commonplace in propaganda pieces, even when they weren’t as ubiquitous by the time many of these shorts came out.
Who cares if people get offended just appreciate the animation this took time and effort and money I don’t give a fuck if anybody got offended. This is awesome.
@@DvoTee-un9hw That's some silly logic man. The modern day Disney slop people like to complain about takes time, effort, and money yet we all agree we ain't gonna appreciate cause it sucks ass. This animation ain't above criticisms and complaints like every other piece of media and art.
@@jhalilxvii bro all the new shit is liberal woke trash they care more about putting identity, politics and left-wing agenda into the shows and movies for children then actually caring for it. This actually had time and effort real care put into it.
@@jhalilxvii all their new shit is liberal woke garbage. All they care about is pushing their identity, politics and the left-wing agenda. That’s why it’s trash.
“I get it, it’s meant to be a super racist parody to make fun of racists” “… oh that’s a very [JEWISH] last name for the director… oh no…” Edit: this is more to point out this person is very white rather than they’re specifically that ethnicity
But Jews aren’t white they only claim to be white when it benefits them “fellow white people we should do this” and say they aren’t when it doesn’t “um Jews aren’t white we’re Semitic”
I have a print of Uncle Tom's, but haven't started work yet. I have Tin Pan, it's been color graded, but not cleaned yet. But the color correction is available for download
Bro I have the full short as a bonus feature on this bootleg DVD of Song of the South I bought on eBay. Safe to say the burner of the DVD wanted to make a statement that everything contained on the DVD was racist.
Ok am I the only freak here who thinks Coal Black's character herself is dope af? Her design is cute and sexy and her overall character is just cool and funny. Like I want a silly cartoon show about her just learning how to navigate her world in the setting of the newly "freed" Black Americans. It could be funny and relevant so long as it were show-run over overseen by black american(s). A bit of devil's advocate: The white seven dwarves from the disney film seem to be pretty absurd looking caricatures of short old white men. The only reason the Coal Black dwarves are racist is because it's poking fun at a subjugated group. Coal Black herself is actually an adorably designed and endearing character not being made to look any sillier than many other naive white damsel cartoon characters. Again, the touchiness is all because of the stain of slavery was so fresh and still persists today. The film "Triplets of Bellville" from a decade or so ago can offer some great perspective on how disturbingly hyper-caricatured even white people can be in animation-- The secondary protagonist has a horrifying angular giant horse-nose; arguably beyond equivalent to a black cartoon character's exaggerated pink lips. It's all about context and execution to justify the character design absurdity. I can't really tell by what's been said if Coal Black was made in good faith or not even by 1940s white standards so I won't go to bat for it any further. I'm just saying it looks to have some redeeming qualities and I think it could actually survive a highly scrutinized reboot.
Confession: When I was highschool age, I found out about these "racist banned cartoons". Being the edgy highschool teen I was, I looked them up on RU-vid. However I became disinterested by how silly and wacky they were acting... This was between 2006 and 2010.
I mean, that's not really a confession, most people like shock humor, heck I still laugh at some of these for being so blatantly obscenely racist and knowing the current climate that these would NOT fly now lmao
This ain't acceptable today, but it is fairly stupid enough that as much as it is racist, it's far removed from anything being politically specific. Just 1930-40 media stereotypes old films deploy because theres a tonaly black humor in racism.
