The health impact of coal consumption is becoming increasingly evident, as the use of steam coal for power generation contributes to air pollution and associated respiratory diseases. Despite these concerns, governments continue to provide fossil fuel subsidies to the coal industry, complicating efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources. The environmental impact of coal mining and burning is severe, affecting ecosystems and contributing to climate change. Additionally, fluctuations in the coal price index can influence market dynamics, impacting the cost-effectiveness of alternative energy investments and raising questions about the long-term sustainability of relying on coal as a primary energy source.

seems you need a lot of coal to provide the whole world with green energy

You need a lot of electricity to power most of the world's factories. Like most countries they use what's cheapest. China doesn't have gas which is what most countries switched to instead of coal. They are building alternatives at a rapid rate. China has the largest amount of solar and wind generation and the second largest nuclear generation. Their emissions per capita are around half the US.

@@Cawa9475 true, they are trying to get some from Putin at bargain rates. But the existing pipeline is not very large and a new one would be extremely expensive and probably won't happen.

Most countries stopped using coal because they switched to gas instead. China doesn't have gas but they have lots of coal, which is why they stuck with it. Also China has 4 times the population of the US. Every number is big there. They are also the largest exporter of good in the world. Most of the coal power is going into powering those factories. China has the largest amount of solar generation in the world, and the largest amount of wind generation in the world, and the second largest amount of nuclear generation in the world. Even with all that coal, their emissions per capita are around half that in the US. They are aiming for coal consumption to peak in 2024 and start dropping next year.

It would be interesting to see this per capita.

Yes, many people can't comprehend just how giant China is. It has 4x the population of the US. But its also because the amount of manufacturing for export done there is huge.
