We had DJ and his crew out for a swordfishing trip aboard the Broad Minded back in October. We stopped for tuna first and had a hot bite going on and then the Coast Guard pulled up. They did a safety check and after 15 minutes we passed and they were on their way! After leaving the hump We caught a small swordfish,an alfonsino, a mahi, and a couple queen snapper. It was a great fishing trip off Islamorada!

Islamorada Coast Guard always had an agreement with the charter fisherman when they had clients spending money on charters they wouldn’t stop offshore for safety checks, they would do them at the dock. This boat was Key West though 🙂

@@StanzFam That makes a lot of sense. First I wondered why you kept fishing, then I put myself in the customer's shoes. Then I thought about all the regulations you have to abide by just to get a captain's licences and also to keep one. They should not be checking you if you have paying customers aboard. I wholeheartedly agree.

Here in Washington state they lose their minds if you try to keep fishing when they try to board your boat. Always nice to them and support the Coasties, but having to stop fishing for them is wrong. Love the way you just kept going and they worked with & around you.

If you want to reduce your interactions with the USCG, simply contact your local USCG Auxiliary and ask for a safety inspection. They will come out to your vessel, inspect, and if and when you have everything, issue a sticker. When a boarding officer sees that sticker, they typically will say thanks for participating and move on.

I’ve been ocean boating for over 30 years. Only had the water cops come next to my boat once in open water. They said they wanted to do a safety inspection. I always have enough preservers, fire extinguishers etc. So when the CG asked to board my boat I asked if I was suspected of committing a crime, they said no. Then I said boarding request denied. I wished them a nice day and I left. They did nothing. You do not have to let them on your boat. They are law enforcement, they are not your friends in this situation. Always refuse to allow them to board.

Considering you can look up the cost of a new Freeman 37 quite easily on the internet, id say you maybe wrong. Maybe his upgrades cost around 3/4 of the cost of the boat and if it did you would be right. I highly doubt it but anything is possible. One thing for sure it’s a mighty fine aquatic specimen

Believe me they know they are not popular boarding charter boats. My skipper was tired of boarding the same charter captains over an over again in Maui HI back in the 80’s. People are paying lots of money to go out and fish on vacation and here we were taking some of their fun time away from them. We were required to complete a certain amount of law enforcement boardings every month though so that is what we did. USCG 1981-1986. 🍻 Again it is there job and thank you for making it easy for them.

The boarding first in the morning was uncalled for. It's not like they can't see the name of the boat and the owner and know he probably has a perfect safety record. Probably a plane flying high in the skies also. Had great experiances with senior CG crews and horrible ones with rookies. In fact in Fort Lauderdale, FL the CG got in big trouble when they kept pulling over the same boats for safety checks cause they had chicks in g-strings on board. They pulled over the same boats every weekend to just see some eye candy till multiple boats reported them.

The Coast Guard are like cops. Whenever you need them, they are never around. However, when you do need them, good luck. The Coast Guard used to tow boats in that had broken down but for some unknown reason they stopped doing it, which gave rise to Sea Tow, BoatUS, etc. Years ago, I was fishing in Key West Harbor with my brother and we were boarded by the Coast Guard for a routine safety inspection, which we passed with flying colors. Yes, the Coast Guard has a job to do and new Coast Guardsmen need to learn how to do proper boarding and safety inspections. I just wish they didn't do it while I was fishing on my vacation.

Yes, 30 miles is international waters. And incorrect, they do have jurisdiction as the boat is a US flagged/registered vessel.

They wanted some "face time" on StanzFam! BTW...if you're actively hooked up, and running the boat as captain...they are NOT to board your vessel until it is safe, and ALL are secure...you know you're safe, and legal...they don't, and are to wait until the vessel and operations are secure. Anyway...doing their job, and all good!

That "Calcutta Bamboo" pole is Bad News for the fish.. This is NOT the thin and brittle bamboo like here in Georgia.. It's thick and resilient and Strong as Can be.. I Made a "Shark Rod" from it at 12 years old in Venice, Florida while at Grandma's House for the Summer.. The 4/O Penn reel and Heavy line Would wear them (and You) Out Brother.. Man I wish we had fish 30 miles offshore. All we got for mahi is 60 miles and tuna is 60-120. But the good thing is we got those 60lb bull dorado and 100-250lb average bluefin

35 years ago Ed Groth, CEO of Groth Valves, Houston had a motor yacht with another guy, they used to fish the Texas Coast, he hated sharks so much used to stuff and stitch up cans of Drano drain cleaner into larger fish like those BF tunas and toss 'em overboard to get rid of the pesky sharks, rumor was you could watch the sharks rolling on the surface, suffering till they died. In today's world the authorities would arrest him. Sure got rid of the shark problem though.

Hey Nick the biggest most respect!! Lol. On your cane pole. In Ca the old tuna fleet used lift poles. From your tip put 4 inch para cord then use a black rubber tie down (this is called shocker) then to mono.

When I was a delivery tech at Hatteras Yachts we got boarded almost every weekend on ocean sea trails. For the most part they just wanted to check out the boats. Got kinda aggravating after awhile

The coast guard can and will board your boat for safety inspections multiple times a day. 5-15 time a day depending how many coast guard boats are out on patrol completely ruining your trip. If on a charter, they can and will eat up every minute of your trip. Still have to pay up!!!!!!!
