My first comment didn't post so I will try again I think you did something VERY IMPORTANT in this video and that was to teach instead of preach, about not doing something. So many people are quick to say to children DON'T instead of teaching about what it is, how to respect it and use it properly and the reasons it could be dangerous if not used properly. Today it was you teaching James about fire and I love it. Your method can be used for many things people (mostly parents and teachers) preach don't too. Weather it is gun safety and proper use, motorized vehicles, fireworks and other things that go boom, hunting, fishing, foraging and use of non-populated areas (woods/water/rolling plains/mountains/...) and the respect those areas should be shown when visiting them. To often people (mostly those with little or no knowledge of the things in question) tend to tell children DON'T touch or do that instead of explaining why and in appropriate settings letting them experience some of those things, to certain levels. Obviously discretion would need to be used in some circumstances but your never to young to start learning and in most cases experience is the best teacher.

I got taught how to build fires in the Cubs when I was young, no harm at all. Never went off and burnt down houses or caused issues. You learn to respect and how to build, control and remove the fire when done. I think it's an essential skill that is getting lost and the PC brigade are stripping these skills from the young. So good to see you pass on as many skills as possible to the young one, IMHO it's the best thing for a Farther to do. Good on you. Also I think it's important to teach them where food comes from and to respect the animals and take only whats needed and to allow the next generation to thrive so you can continue a sustainable way of life.I think this is a fantastic channel, keep it up!

I think teaching your son fire safety and how to stack wood for effective campfires is great-you'd learn it in scouts, anyways. It's good for survival training in case he's out alone or hiking in the woods. It's best to stay in one place and wait for rescue if you get lost and knowing he can start a small campfire and keep warm in that situation is a nice bit of insurance and peace of mind. Plus, like you said, you can teach him and he's completely supervised so it's a safe environment. It's nice to learn about the ocean life of Cornwall alongside him, too! (I'm from New England in the USA- we have some different and some same or similar here. It's especially different in the Long Island Sound area VS the Atlantic. The currents are very different so the shore types, wave size, and some of the sea life are all different and there are different protections on shellfish. Also in Maine lobsters blue is a rare coloration as are white ones and yellowy ones. Our guys are mostly deep red.)

32:35 John, I just had to pause this a while to comment. Not only is this a fantastic video showing the wealth of hidden life which exists under our feet around our coastline, made more awesome by your depth of knowledge and excellent commentary, you also show us, and most importantly James, the true meaning and example of good parenting skills. You continually ask him his opinion instead ‘telling him’, you give him the chance to see, feel and experience the wonders of nature, ensuring he will learn rather than asking him to remember. The effect your skills have had on James over the last three years is so clear to see, he is visibly and audibly growing in confidence every time we see him on camera, it is wonderful to behold! I am going to enjoy the rest of the video now, keep up the good work! Just a thought, but this would be a terrific video to send to the Water companies that are discharging raw sewage into our seas and to the Environment Agency to show how fragile our ecosystems are and to demonstrate the massive range of marine life threatened by their actions. Maybe, thinking ahead, you could work with a TV company and an environmental presenter to produce a video for distribution to TV networks. I’m sure the general public would find it fascinating! Have you got an agent!😉

Fantastic video - love seeing your quality time with James. And I entirely agree about James' fire - important that young people learn such skills in a safe and supervised environment.

Hello to you and James, he has grown up so much. And it is wonderful how you are teaching him the rights from wrong on how to collect sea food. And also how to care for the environment.❤️💯👍

Fabulous content and commentary as usual John. Really impressed with how young James is doing - the knowledge and understanding he has already is exemplary and there is only one reason for that - I know you are very proud, and rightly so.
