I have always liked those radios. Never owned one but always wanted one. My buddy had one in the early 90's. I bought the Grant XL and he bought the 148GTL. Awesome radio. UDX-76 waiving a hand.
I wouldn't compare popularity to performance, the Grant XL is solid as the Cobra 148 and performs equally. They're both outstanding radios, the Cobra was more popular is all.
I've owned a General Lee, owned a Stryker 955, owned a ranger, owned a galaxy and the honest truth, for me anyway, is I still like my cobra GTL that's in my jeep the best. It's just the easiest radio to deal with I've ever had. No antenna/swr problems, no issues with internal parts, no extra gadgets built in to have to consider. Definitely my favorite. Less is sometimes more and cobra radios fit that niche perfectly.
I got into cb radio when I got out of the Army in the mid '90's....at that time, the big 3 mobiles in my area were the Cobra 148 GtL, the Uniden Grant and the Galaxy 99V. In addition, at that time, the most popular base radio seemed to be the Cobra 2000 GtL. Lol, I'm a bit of a collector....hoarder? No, collector, lol, as well...I don't have a 2000 GTL, but I have all 3 of those mobiles! I also, for some reason, became addicted to collecting Pace cb's. I have about 20 or so different models including the big 3 from Smokey and the Bandit (CB166, 1000M Sidetalk, CB76) movie. Yes, I do Ham...but I'll never abandon CB!
I still got the Uniden AX144 my parents bought me back in the 80s. The ANL/NB has stopped working and a seized RF meter. The receive and transmit sound quality on the AX144 was excellent. It's still my favourite radio for quality
I used to collect and work on CB Radios in the 80's and 90's . Nobody talks on them anymore around here . I still have a Brand New in the box GALAXY 2517 With an Astatic Echomax 2000 wired to it !
@@rayinpau.s.a.6351 dang that’s a shame no one in your area is on cb anymore. It’s still pretty big in my area, but at 30yrs old I’m the youngest one on the air here lol. You ever wanna sell that 2517 let me know!
I would sell the Radio & The Echomax for $550.00 , And you would cover the shipping cost . I have both boxes for the Radio . The Black box & the Original Shipping Box . I know you would love owning this Radio as I have owned a few of these .
I have had a Cobra 148 GTL DX since the 90's. It's much loved and i will never part with it. Cars these days don't have room to fit one since airbags were invented. Shame. Nice Vid !!
The Cobra 148 made in Taiwan is the best one and it has the MB8719 PLL IC that be programmed easy with switches for more Frequencies stay away from the one that was made in China. Just my two cents Commet
I have been looking for a 148 to set up as a base but all I have found are on eBay and I can’t seem to win one for the snipers that wait to the last second to outbid me
Yeah they’ve been selling high on there too I’ve noticed. They’re awesome radios. Hopefully you’ll find one soon just keep looking 👍🏻 if I happen to get ahold of one I’ll let you know.
@@udx-294tn5 that sounds good I have been out of the radio game for a good long time and wanting to get back in to it and these new radios I just don’t know so much about. I am kinda an old school person but I’m kinda an old person to start with haha.
The early 148s made in Taiwan and the Philippines from 1978-1991 were made with better components than the later models. Im not sure why people go crazy over the Philippines models specifically though. Pre 1992 they’re all the same internally.
I just purchased a Cobra nightwatch. Was hoping to use it for a trip on I95. But’s it basically useless. Nothing but skip, and people 1,000 miles away talking B.S.
