Mike, I cannot thank you enough for the knowledge you are providing. you are the #1 Elmer and in this day in age with everyone diy learning the Elmer is the missing component that sends them all here.
I'm thinking of getting my Technician HAM license. I just took a sample test for Amateur Radio and passed it without even studying anything. I do need to brush up on some of the rules and regulations as well as antenna radiation so I will score a little higher. I've been into electronics all my life now so it's time to try for my HAM license. At 69 I ain't getting any younger.
When I was in the Navy, in the 60's a unit like this would take a quick trip through the ultra-sonic cleaner. We had one that i could set an R-390 with room to spare down into, besides getting rid of dirt and corrosive glues, it would also expose burned and cracked resisters and other bad components. Just remove the tubes and drop her in, I forget the name of the solvent, but I remember its vapors were dangerous as hell. Another great video Mike! Thanks
I really love watching your repair videos mike. It inspires me to want to learn. Very well done videos that are interesting but sooo funny. You moan, groan and gasp at most radios whilst taking the mick out of previous repairs. Very dry humour and i could watch these videos all day especially as I had some of the best times of my youth meeting people on the cb in the early 90's. Keep them coming 👍
thanks for the come back because i have one power cord for three beside the cobra twenty nine that i got for fre. it is a well built radio even though it only has am.
Been into CB since 1968. I never modded a thing except panel lights. Is there anyone here that just likes things the way they were made, like I do? I admit I repaired or modded maybe a thousand over the years for people, but I like my stuff pretty much stock.
I had my 148GTL tuned and peaked when I bought it brand new as a Truck Driver. Loved it, and it did very well on ssb picking up skip. My X-Wife during the cloudy day's, sat mine in the back yard behind the garage! It had rai8ned and even snowed before I found it!!! All I could do was "Shake My Head And LEAVE QUICKLY!" My Galaxy is much better than my Cobra, but I will never forget my radio.
Those are nice radios until some rig doctor gets inside and screws them up! Glad to see there is people like you that can sort them out and make them work well again. When you hear a well tuned radio without echo mikes and not over modulated it is clearer and better than any radio that has been screwed around with. I really enjoyed this video and I like your style.. So I will be looking more into your content. But now it is
Ah , a cobra 148gtl . I had one . And I see you have a Astatic 575- m6 too . Great set up if you didn't change anything else 👍. I was talking to Philadelphia from my house , and probably parts of new jersey too . It cut right through the interference .
when you add in all these extra mods. That can put strain on other components like the regulator it can add current draw. And lead to instability and thermal overload. Sometimes tracks can burn out because they cant take it too when doing power modifications.
