Here are 10 Tips for training with a Cobra Bag:
1. If you're a beginner, set the top section to the longest setting - this will reduce the speed and help you get used to the movement of the bag;
2. Set the height of the ball to about chin level when standing up straight next to it. This will make it the right height when you're in your fighting stance with legs apart and knees bent.
3. Ensure that the ball is well inflated at the start of every training session - top it up if need be. Poorly inflated ball will not perform well and you run the chance of damaging the ball adapter that is inside.
4. Use boxing gloves when training with the cobra bag. Aside from protecting your hands, the bag will perform much better and you'll have a much more satisfying session.
5. Check your stance - legs apart, knees bent and well balanced. Try moving around on your toes, in and out, as well as side to side while keeping your legs wide apart for optimum balance. Make sure to keep both of your gloves up, with your leading glove in front for putting out your jabs.
6. When you're learning for the first time, start of with very gentle taps to get the feel for the movement of the bag. Punching hard may send the bag out of control and possibly spinning out into circles. Once you learn to punch accurately, you will be able to control the movement of the bag and punch faster and with more power.
7. Get into a rhythm with your punches. The cobra bag is all about rhythm.
8. Use a timer to time your sessions. Start off with three or four rounds at two minutes each. Set half a minute for the rest periods in between the rounds. If you feel you're up to it, increase the rounds to 3 minutes and do more rounds if you can.
9. Focus on technique rather than power in some of your rounds. Think about keeping both gloves up and your punches going straight out and coming straight back without dropping.
10. As you get better, increase the pace and start doing combinations, like 1-2, 1-1-2, 1-2-1-2, etc. Make sure to stay light and well balanced on your feet and move around the bag. As you get better, try coming in and out of range. Movement is key when training with the cobra bag!
