LOL, as a Black guy I feel like they should have kept it! That scene was funny AF! I almost called my BJJ coach master today just to mess with him but out of fear of being choked out I did not LOL.
Yeah hahaha. It was funny when he called him Master Todd again and he said "uhm…. just Todd is fine." like he gave it some thought to what Johnny said.
Agreed. What a great scene. I love how old school and out of touch Johnny is, it just adds alot of charm and honesty to the character and the BJJ coach line at the end made me spit water all over myself "uhhh... Just todd is fine " lol
@literally not z Johnnu would get swept to the ground and essentially the bjj guy has the option to break avery joint in his body since Johnny doesnt know how to grapple
You know, the idea of introducing non-karate related establishments into the valley as small competition is actually a good idea. It’d lead to more innovative fights too
@Evan Koch I absolutely love the Karate Kid movies and Cobra Kai, totally addicted to watching them. But the reality is the BJJ guy would've made easy work of a karate guy.
@Evan Koch Yeah, I agree that if in 1984 if Johnny and Daniel fought in a non tournament format that Daniel would never have won at that point. He was getting all of the early points in the match and without a ref to stop the fight every time a point was scored he would've never given him a chance to recover.
"At my dojo, I don't make the black guys call me 'Master." That was genius! (This scene should have been included. It shows Johnny growing as a character and learning to manipulate the nuances of political correctness according to the situation.) He even displayed a true Miyagi-Do ethos in the scene. He walked away from fighting, right after rendering his opponents mentally helpless. "Best way to avoid punch -- no be there!" He outsmarted the BJJ guys, and that shows even more depth of character on Johnny's part. Can't wait for Season 3!
@Evan Koch It''s called "irony" and "context." No worries. Some folks are slow at recognizing them. Keep watching it and thinking deeply about how Johnny is portrayed in the show, his belligerence and political non-correctness, and eventually it'll make sense to you. Trust us.
@@ssimpala1901 Nah, don't give up hope. People can learn and change and increase their intelligence through careful explanation. Well, with the exception of Kreese, apparently. (Although we may be in for some big surprises from him in Season 3!)
@Evan Koch Johnny wasn't being racist. Johnny was turning racism on itself to make a point of insulting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, while the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in turn insulted the far more ancient art of Japanese/Okinawan Karate in the same way, dismissing it as just 'babysitting little kids' (and which could also be interpreted as racialist and certainly disrespectful on the BJJ practitioners'' part.) Johnny cleverly one-upped them by throwing that particular racial comment in the mix, which made the BJJ guy completely lose his cool and want to fight then and there (which is something the 'old Johnny' would have been down for.) What we saw were martial artists of different styles behaving like immature kids by mutually insulting each other's style's heritage (Brazilian fighting arts vs. Asian fighting arts.) Not racism, buy "stylism." :)
Man, this would’ve been awesome if they kept it in because it touches on the age old rivalry of strikers vs grapplers, which before MMA was quite common. If they kept it in this scene would be peak 80-90’s.
I do Kempo Karate, which is very much a mixed bag of striking and grappling, and the truth is, as arch-rival as they seem, you really can't have one without the other. Striking is good for distance, but if someone gets in your space bubble, and you can't wind up to strike with fist or elbow, you need grappling and throws, ect
I don't think they cut it cause of the racist joke, there's a lot of racist jokes in the show cause racism is a character trait for johnny, especially in the first season. This just didn't really seem like a good scene.
@@aluisiofsjr It could be. Alot of great gyms are there now, and more and more guys are heading that way.....I'm not complaining, only 3hr flight to Orlando/Miami for me vs 5+ cali! ;)
I have no idea why anyone thinks "Professor" is better! That's the dumbest title in all of martial arts. I get it has been translated from Portuguese but that word means something different in Portuguese, whereas Professor has a very specific meaning in English. It's so damn cringe worthy seeing people refer to some meathead with a GED level education as "Professor" just because he has a black belt 😂
@bad boi Clearly you have no idea what butt scooting means. It is when you keep pulling guard or start a match from the sitting guard position when the other guy is standing. But in the video, one guy is already in the middle of trying to pass the other guy's guard. That said, they are not actually doing real jiu jitsu anyway. The guy ON THE TOP is doing spider guard, which makes no sense unless he already swept the other guy from the bottom and was trying to get on top. The main instructor also had no stripes, which doesn't make sense for the black guy to call him "Master Todd" since he was also the same ranked Black Belt. The word "Master" implies that your instructor has many many more years of experience than you.So if you become a Black Belt, normally your professor would have at least a stripe or two more than you, unless you both started at similar times (e.g. maybe your instructor was a purple belt when you were a white belt. But still, I wouldn't call a Purple Belt "Master" if I were a white belt) You could also argue that maybe the main instructor just didn't get officially promoted any degrees because there was no one around to promote him, but that's unlikely since it is California. Plus, the black guy was wearing his black belt like a newbie.
@bad boi you are very misinformed if you think bjj has no takedowns. You must be lying about the guys you train with because even novice level white belts know basic stand-up jujitsu.
@@ryanatorryanson9535 no they specialize in fighting on the ground not taking down, besides Johnny fights very fast and very aggressive I don’t think they’d be able to get a good grapple on him to be able to do a takedown
@@jonomotive2000 Well I guess they must be good at getting people on the ground then. Ya, they’d probably have a tougher time with him since he is very quick, especially for his age.
i just noticed johnny channeled the bjj sensei when he said "you trying to poach my students?" to daniel when he entered johnny's dojo after finding out that miyagi's medal was stolen
Show runners know BJJ is a legit and effective martial art. They don't wanna insult it and get bombarded with hate comments from the MMA internet community lol....the keyboard warriors.
@@BL0HARD Old school yes, the newer Olympic crap isn’t. Same with Taekwondo. If it wasn’t for the Olympics practically downgrading them and limiting rules then it would’ve been such a good self defense martial art. Nowadays the best martial arts to learn are Muay Thai, Jiu jitsu, and MMA being the best one.
I'm Brazilian and I declare this scene #brazilianapproved. That was offensive as shit and entirely true to the character. If you can't stand fictional characters doing awful things in a fictional situation, you can't stand fiction at all.
Então, soa como o personagem mesmo. Ele é bobão e não tem nenhuma noção étnica ou de cultura fora dos EUA. Confunde chinês com japonês, acha que latino é tudo a mesma coisa, etc. É basicamente um boomer.
@@gannielukks1811 Exatamente, matou a charada.
Its a great scene and its certainly provoked a lot of debate, but I can see why the producers decided to cut it First, it just slows down the show. If you've got 24 mins roughly to tell that episode's story, a minute of some awkwardness between Johnny and the BJJ isn't as desirable as some character development or plot development. Its why there are so many cut scenes in comedy movies...sure, some of the unedited stuff is hilarious, but if its not advancing the plot it has to go Next, and this is really going to get some people's heckles up...BJJ just isn't going to work well on the screen. Why? Well, in any strike based choreography, we can clearly see who's winning or losing. Its easier to train actors who aren't martial artists to look like they're throwing or taking punches and kicks. Audiences aren't all BJJ/MMA fanatics who can appreciate the finer points of grappling. Wrestling based choreography is extremely difficult to film well. With notable exceptions - Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon - but this is rare. David Mamet's Red Belt, which focussed on BJJ, still looked awkward. That's why basic Judo throws like O Soto Gari, Tomeo Nage and O Goshi feature so much...not hard to learn for film, and look good. Cobra Kai is character driven, and time and budget means that they can't find a dozen or more young actors who not only do MMA to high standard, but can act really well. Even amongst elite MMA fighters, its still two people rolling around on top of each other, a mess of arms and legs, until someone submits and when they both stand up, we finally find out who lost! there’s also censorship. How, you might ask? Aside from Johnny and Daniel, the main cast are adolescents. Showing a grown man on top of a minor, or a male and female minor wrestling, in a show where those characters are almost continually fighting(!!!), would probably not be allowed Back in the 70s, NBC put so many restrictions on the fight scenes of Kung Fu they were lucky to show anything. David Chow, the martial arts director for the show, explained at the time: And finally, its easy to get really passionate about BJJ, often to the point where you can't comprehend why anyone would want to train in any other system. But there has always been MMA, under various names, throughout history. My Karate, which is military TangSooDo, closely resembles the Cobra Kai system (if it existed) We learnt kicks and punches, but there was throwing, holds and chokes in the system. Of course, we weren't as good as a BBJ practitioner, but the goal wasn't to be a specialist, but to know enough to protect ourselves should we need to use groundfighting. Its not perfect - nothing is - but its served me well
yes in Vegas theres one and it sucks. No trial classes, lots of ego and meat heads who dont teach newbies properly. A better Cobra Kai is in Victorville, CA. They are way more professional and teach ground techniques, muay thai, and kickboxing plus gym access
Both CKJJs are derivatives of the original in the industrial area of Las Vegas lead by Marc Laimon. Sim Go, who owns the new Las Vegas Cobra Kai, is hardly a meathead and a phenomenal instructor. I believe Joe Stevenson owns the Victorville, CA academy.
My take is that its a specific name and the scenario creates too big a doubt on the world they ve created. With mma being a mainstay in today's culture, once you drop one name, suddenly people want to see muay thai, wing chun, etc...
Most peapole don't see the reason why this scene was deleted. In Cobra Kai the creators doesn't really want to show any other martial arts. As long as the show goes we know that they exist but the only clue is that Tory learned kickboxing before, and we heard from Miguel others are known ofc and in the tournament we saw a guy who made some capoeira moves (that was pretty odd). So if they include other MA-s in the series they might fell of to the problem that they need to tell us what type of karate cobra kai is. (Clearly Tang Soo Do) Which may can not be told 'cause in a realistic world (like cobra kai has) the magic of the dojo itself would broke... Yeah maybe it woldn't be that much of a problem and it would be cool to se other ma-s in the series, with some rivalry with other arts, but it would wash out the show that the cobra kai (and Miyagi Do which is some Gojo Ryu stuff) and karate itself is the main and superior fighting style of the world. It could cause some holes like in the school fight if a karateka attacked some random judoka and the judoka would throw the shit out of the less trained fighter... I hope you get the point. In other way what would happen if this fight scene wouldn't be cancelled? Well I can't say for sure. I know groundgame is important in streetfights and stuff, but most karate is about blizting, and just for the plot armor and inculdeing the veteranity of Jhonny, he could just ippon Tod to the hell (You know Strike first, he wouldn't wait for the BJJ to start the game). In other way maybe Tod is just as trained as Jhonny and if he isn't knocked out from the first strike, than it would be a problem. Yeah karate has grapling too, but Jhonny is more of a tournament fighter as we know, so he doesn't have the experience for it. Let me see what you think? :D
I think it’s a funny scene but better save the Karate vs for another season. There’s still a lot of unresolved issue between johnny and daniel that adding this might be unnecessary noise (for now). But i wouldnt be surprise if they introduce this angle in future seasons 😁
Don't forget GSP and even TKD guys like Anthony Pettis, Benson Henderson, Anderson Silva, Sage Northcutt, and Conor McGregor. Honorable mention to Joe Rogan and his insane spinning back kicks. Karate/TKD are awesome when mixed with grappling.
For people who think Johnny would’ve lost Remember that in this universe, Johnny is the equivalent of a grandmaster in karate, considering the upcoming season, he’s potentially a top 5 karate master. So a black belt in BJJ vs a master in karate wouldn’t have played out too well, although this was earlier on, but Johnny was still craxy
So here's a funny story...... when season 1 of Cobra Kai come out in 2018, it inspired me to start taking karate .Then in 2022 I also started cross training in BJJ and realized Master Todd (or just Todd) was right IMHO.
There’s a problem when Johnny of all people in the most socially aware. Also, I wish they could’ve taken their fight inside. Would’ve been cool seeing Cobra Kai karate against a grappler. Only time we’ve seen grappler vs karate fights in this franchise have been Johnny vs the MMA guy and Kyler vs Mitch.
The program works nicely because of suspension of disbelief, yeah realistically a bjj guy with basic boxing would be a problem for a karate guy, a wrestler too but it's a tribute to the karate kid movies and it's having fun with it, if the show had a more serious tone it'd be joyless and would have glaring plot holes. Johnny and Daniel's rivalry would be super retarded in a more realistic show and wouldn't work in the story.
this would have been a really good fight scene, true clash of style quality. There's a big difference between mcdojo karate (BJJ guy is probably used to seeing) and Cobra Kai karate.
This was a brilliant scene and should not have been cut out. In all honesty, BJJ is the future of martial arts sports and has a lot of important components that should be integrated into self defense as well. If you're not learning ground work, you're not learning how to fight.
Yeah, I did stand up striking and takedown martial arts for many years, but only fairly recently did I begin to realize that it's only half of the equation, everyone needs to learn how to fight on the ground if they want to be a truly competent fighter.
Bruh if they added more martial arts into the show I feel it would add more of a threat for cobra kai, I don't know how they would balance it out but damn would it bring more cool action scenes.
To all you Karateka's and BJJ bros still beefing, just remember theres a time and a place for every technique and both styles can work well especially when mixed together
or 4, 5, 6... they just assumed it didn't add to the plot... or that the humor wouldn't be appreciated by a large enough portion of the audience... or that it strived too far from the spirit of Karate Kid for the sake of a single joke (in the KK universe karate is THE martial art, others kind of don't exist, they're never mentioned)... or as it happens they simply had too much material and someone tossed a coin your reasons 2 or 3 are roughly the same, and i doubt if any sane person would take offence... bjj wasn't the butt of the joke here, they kept things even. 1 is fairly possible since some SJWs surely would try to raise hell over "trivializing racial issues" or something like that of course multiple reasons aren't mutually exclusive - one executive says this, another says that and it seals the deal
lololol. but high key bjj can get a little awkward but the bjj guy would beat Johnny since bjj specializes in ground work and most fights go to the ground
@michael cooper or watch modern MMA matches where BJJ god's like Roger Gracie or Rolles Gracie get taken out with one punch. Anything can happen in a fight. If Jonny lands first, fights over. If this was one of those silly butt-scooting BJJ places, the type of full contact aggressive karate Johnny does would give him the advantage in the fight, not the butt scoot BJJ guy. I've done BJJ and honestly people can't still reference the Gracie challenge or UFC 1 because today BJJ has changed so much and there are plenty of BJJ guys today who can't really fight or defend themselves for shit. Or if they did try, they would take an awful beating before maybe finding a sub. Here's an example of a BJJ kid trying to do BJJ and it going badly wrong. He then gets jacked up. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ohpygOJk5aI.html BJJ can be useful, but I am fed up with BJJ geeks thinking it's unstoppable. It's inaccurate and insufferable. Many modern BJJ practioners are no better prepared to defend themselves than karate black belts because the art has been watered down in many places in terms of dealing with strikes etc...
@@humann5682 Two senseis I used to train karate with had a challenge. The one did BJJ and the other used karate. Karate won. And no, we often took the time to go through drills for self-defense, so it's not useless. One of the guys I trained with actually used one of these methods in a real life situation when a guy tried to attack him from behind, and it worked. I myself have been able to defend myself in real world situation from a guy who tried it on, on the dancefloor. He ended up apologising after getting his butt kicked by me. How effective the martial arts is, all boils down to who you train with.
@@humann5682 what are the "fights" where Roger Gracie got "taken out with one punch"? the only guy who knocked him out was Lawal, and it didn't take a single punch. (unless you literally only count the knocking out punch, but in that sense pretty much KO is like that - *some* punch must be the last one). not to mention Lawal has very solid wrestling background, so it could hardly count as a win for "pure" punchers. "modern" MMA hasn't been like that for quarter a century anyway... i mean it's no longer a confrontation of pure styles. everybody cross-trains these days. BJJ isn't unstoppable and is not enough for MMA - sure. neither is any other style. if you're a regular dude though (so you're interested in self-defense, not being the next Connon McGregor), BJJ is certainly among the best approaches to 1-on-1 confrontations.
I'm a black belt in karate and I really do want to learn bjj so I can have a solid ground game as well as stand up. If I had the money I'd have already started
He has a point, as someone who did Muay Thai and Karate I went to bjj classes a few times and couldn't stand it. Everyone jumping on their backs as soon as fight starts it's ridiculous for real life application. I also did Judo for a few years so have grappling experience. Edit: By Karate I meant Kyokushin, not the kata style.
LMAO. We all need to relax and just laugh at each other like we did my whole life until like 10 years ago... What the hell happened to us? Some evil thing is trying to divide us and we're letting them!
