Cobra Triangle is one of the most challenging games on the NES, but what would you expect from the people that brought us games like IronSword, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, and Battletoads?
Rare, the UK based developer that would go on to make huge hits like Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye 007, created this quirky vehicle combat game back in the late 1980's. They used the same game engine from their popular RC Pro AM game, but Cobra Triangle would feature a lot more than just racing! Each Stage presents a new objective. Sometimes you just need to reach the finish line, but other times you might have to defuse mines, or rescue people from aliens - it's wild!
At the end of it all is one of the most difficult final bosses in video game history - the shark! The challenges leading up to this dreadful monster are tough, but actually finishing this game has seemed impossible... until now!
So how did this game get made? In this week's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:

I beat this game only one time and my 14 year old self thought I'd won an NBA title the way I was screaming. That game is that difficult yet maddeningly addictive.

Your 14 year old self was perfectly within rights to react that way. :) It took me years before I could beat this game, and even then I needed to use the pod collection technique in Level 1 that he demonstrated and get very lucky. That pod harvesting technique is very helpful, but probably not what the designers intended and thus feels a bit like cheating... but on a game like this, most of us will take any advantage we can get. 😅

I love how you can see some recycled assets and ideas that ended up in other Rare games. The 1-Up and the finish line are the same as Battletoads and there's some similarities to the vehicle stages. A few little things like that. I know it's actually just to save time and money but it feels like little Easter eggs for the fans.

IMO, The triangle part refers to the bermuda triangle. There are aliens and sea monsters in the game, and at the end you rescue people from crashed planes, so maybe your boat is on a mission to save people who crashed into the bermuda triangle? This game is really cool!

i played this game during hot summer days, in my friend's house basement in 1989-1990. We went to the pool swimming, after that we took a mister freeze and we went to the basement to play on the carpet. It was a great afternoon when i was 5-6 years old. Great memories, i play every summer.

Funny how the boss at stage 23 has the Time Out mechanic of most shooter games like Gradius that as long as you survive for long enough the boss dies or leaves without bothering you, the ending is just a final bonus stage of rescuing people, XD. Not to mention that in Rare Replay you have emulation tools like rewind to help you even more.

Another great video! I played this game as a kid. I could never get very far. I had no concept of the upgrades. My cousin beat the dragon, we thought it was the hardest thing and the end of the game. Man were we surprised when the next stage loaded.

I never saw the icebergs ever cuz I never got past the first boss and I never knew how to upgrade the boat's abilities. I got the game as a rental from Blockbuster without the manual. In all seriousness, your videos are SO much fun and are the best I have ever seen in terms of giving good, simple advice. I still haven't beaten Cobra Triangle straight up (without the Game Genie) so I might have to fire it up and go for the real victory this time! I think I made it to like Stage 14-15 but never beat the game outright.

In all the years I've played this game it never occurred to me to power up on level 1 by dying on purpose. With this guide I was able to reach level 13 on first try. Your video got me playing again, so I guess that's good.

Yeah, that technique wasn't something I learned until seeing it on some guide online. It helped me finally beat this one a few years ago. This channel keeps teaching me new things I never knew, even about games I've mastered over the years. I was aware that the two exits in the first level impacted the route, but never realized that the second fork several levels later was related to the first. I'm also pretty sure I never knew about the trick to the second Guard the People level. Good stuff. 🚤

My mom bought this game when I was very young, and I absolutely loved the menu theme and first level, it was such a tough game it took me years to progress.
