Darth Vader is played by 4 people in the original trilogy: 1. the body is former champion bodybuilder, David Prowse 2. the sword, Olympic fencer and stunt choreographer, Bob Anderson 3. the face, force ghost Anakin and helmet removal scene is Sebastian Shaw, Hayden Christensen was added after the prequels 4. the voice.. Vader would be far less intimidating without the amazing voice work of James Earl Jones
@jbfox100

Prowse basically screwed himself out of being the face. It was originally shot with him and I remember him leaking the info to the press that he was finally going to be seen. Lucas then reshot the scene with Shaw.

That they exchanged Sebastian Shaw's ghost with that of Hayden Christensen is yet another act of sacrilege by Lucas. Anakin's ghost changes its age to when he was young, whereas Obi-Wan and Yoda's ghosts maintain their ages at death. He just doesn't know what's good for him, and what the fans love and what they hate. "The fans LOVED the original three movies. The fans said they loved everything the way it was. I know: let's change everything! And especially, let's change the ending! Let's change everything they knew and loved. Let's change the wonderful music and let's make the scene feel less genuine and intimate and add a lot of characters we've never seen in the movies who couldn't know that the galaxy had now been saved but are still celebrating it, instead of just showing the celebrating of the Ewoks and Luke and Leia and Han." And he thought, "they'll LOVE Jar-Jar Binks." and "They'll love Woke Star Wars and me killing off Han Solo and making Luke - the star if the whole thing - just a secondary bit-player to the strong, shallow female lead they've never seen or heard of before. That'll be the perfect end to what began with Luke." He has such great instincts.

The reason it was so "easy" to kill the Emperor was because he was so focused on killing Luke he couldn't "feel" Vaders intentions. As for why Vader died, the Emperor made Vaders suit very susceptible to lighting, to have power over him, and it short circuited Vaders breathing apparatus.
@joshjames582
@joshjames582 4 месяца назад

The reason Vader says "nothing can stop that now" when Luke says he will die if he takes his mask of is because Vader knows the only thing that kept him alive was his hatred. Thats one of the reasons why the dark side is powerful, your hatred can literally let you survive what normally would be certain death.

The wampa scene in the ice cave was better before when you couldn't really see it, Han and Greedo scene was better (much better arc for Han), the Jabba scene outside the Falcon was stupid and superfluous, etc., and as you say the "no" takes away from that scene. Yes, this is the first time we as an audience got to see Jabba back in 1983. The Jabba scene in A New Hope was originally shot with a human actor playing Jabba, who Lucas intended to replace via bluescreen with a stop-motion animated creature. He ran out of time and couldn't make it the way he wanted, so he cut the scene. In 1997 the scene was added back in for the Special Edition of the movie(along with other changes), using a CGI Jabba that looked like crap. In 2004 for the DVD release a new, better-looking CGI Jabba which is what you see now. In the original scene Han walked behind the human actor, with the CGI Jabba the footage was manipulated to make it look like Han is stepping on Jabba's tail.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about five miles away ..._ *EPISODE VI* *JABBA THE HUTT, THE GOVERNOR, AND THE BANGIN' NEW SOUND SYSTEM* I saw _Return of the Jedi_ in the Stuart (now Roccoco) Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska. She took up the first six floors of the 10-story Stuart Building. Like many theaters of her era, the Stuart had once been a live theater later converted to cinema. She originally hosted the local symphony orchestra, theatrical companies, operas, touring companies, vaudeville, etc. When she was converted to cinema, they sold her backstage area. Today, it's a theater-themed night club: _The Barrymore_ . The Stuart was one of those Grand Dame theaters: six stories high, three balconies, box seats, hand woodworking, and gold and silver inlays everywhere. There was a gigantic chandelier over the main floor. She seated 1,850. She was truly a beautiful sight to behold. At the time I saw _Jedi_ , she had a bangin' new sound system -- which is a good time for a flashback ... _Slightly longer ago, at a High School about three miles away ..._ It was my Senior year in High School, and I was several days from graduating. The school held an assembly to acknowledge honor students, which I wasn't. Along with hundreds of other students, I'd be bored out of my mind for the next three hours. Then it hit me, like a flash of lightning: _The Stuart Theater is offering free admission to an obscure movie, so that they can show off her bangin' new sound system_ . After weighing my options, I decided to go do the Stuart Theater. I mean, what were they going to do, give me detention? I was graduating in a few days! As everyone else went to the school auditorium, I went in the opposite direction, to the school's main exit. However, as I was walking down the hall, who should be approaching but the Principal, two Vice-Principals, and the Governor of the State of Nebraska. The Governor was scheduled to give some kind of speech about how wonderful life is and we have so much ahead of us, blah blah blah. I assumed my goose was cooked. The Principal and his Vices knew precisely where I was supposed to be, and it wasn't headed out the door. What I hadn't counted on was that admonishing me in front of the Governor would be embarrassing for the Principal. I'm sure they told the Governor how squeaky-clean the school was, how the students are all fantastic, how there were never any problems, etc. To admonish me would be to destroy the propaganda. So we simply passed each other. I politely said hello to the Governor and nodded to the Principal and his Vices. They gave me angry hellos between clenched teeth. And then I walked out the door, hopped in my Chevy Chevette, and went to the Stuart. _Meanwhile, back at Return of the Jedi ..._ The Stuart's bangin' new sound system was not only bangin', it was astonishing. Imagine hearing Maestro John Williams' brilliant score as it shook the entire theater. It was no less impressive than a live performance by the London Symphony Orchestra. But that wasn't even the half of it. When Jabba had his first line, " *Bo shudda* ," the bass shook the rafters and thundered throughout the whole building. I recall being in the middle seat, of the first row, of the first balcony with some friends. The floor and guardrail shook like a minor earthquake. It doesn't matter how good your home sound system is, the music isn't reverberating the steel support beams of a 10-story building. I sat there for two hours just waiting for good bass, and was never disappointed. I mean, at the very least there was the London Symphony Orchestra performing the score, as composed and conducted by Maestro John Williams! So while this wasn't as immersive as the Indian Hills Theater for _A New Hope_ , it was sill impressive! *Bo shudda!*

As Luke told the Emperor, his greatest weakness was his overconfidence. Vader had attempted to rebel against Palpatine multiple times before this movie, but was defeated each time. After seeing Vader supposedly not affected by Luke's attempts to bring him back from the Dark Side, Palpatine was confident Vader would remain his servant and didn't view him as a threat while torturing Luke. The last Jedi and student of Yoda and Obi-Wan would be slowly tortured to death. But when Anakin rebelled, Palpatine was beyond pissed and upped the lightning to lethal levels to ensure Anakin would die for his defiance. But being willing to sacrifice your life to save someone is a Light Side trait, as a Dark Sider could never feel that way.

I watched this in 1983, and back then there was no CGI beak for the Sarlacc, it was just a pit lined with teeth and tentacles, the dance routine was merely Oola dancing for him, and then spurning his advances hence why she was fed to the Rancor in the pit underneath Jabba's throne room, Vader was silent when he finally changed sides and saved Luke grabbing the Emperor and throwing him over the edge. The CGI beak and the song and dance routine and Vader shouting no before he acts, were added for the Special Edition releases in 1997. He also added the celebrations across the galaxy to the Special Edition, and further tweaked this by adding Christian Hayden in a 2004 update. The original celebrations just the the Rebel and the Ewoks celebrating back on the Forest Moon with the Ewoks "Jub Jub" song. Edit, changed 1984 to 1983 as I was still at school when this came out. I have a newer theory that Vader had mostly turned back to being Anakin by the time he brought Luke to the Emperor. The regret in his voice prior when he said “it is too late for me, son” says it all. When look took his lightsaber back and Vader blocked him, it wasn’t to protect the Emperor, but to stop Luke from following him down the wrong path and going to the dark side. The Emperor didn’t notice the change because Anakin/Vader were still wrestling for control and he was too focused on showing Luke he knew it all. That’s why Vader still fought Luke and Vader even taunted about Leia, but in the end as Luke was able to pull back when he saw his father helpless, Vader was fully defeated as Anakin saw his own son, his last link to his early life and people he loved, about to die, he broke free and redeemed himself.

Vader didn't know he had a single child, let alone twins. Think back to his conversation with the emperor in Empire Strikes Back. They're both kinda playing word games but when the emperor tells him the rebel who blew up the death star was the offspring of Anakin Skywalker, Vaders response is "how is that possible?" Its ambiguous enough to not spoil the twist, but when you know that IS Anakin Skywalker, "how is that possible?" takes on a much more specific meaning.

I suspect the reason Luke did not just use the Force to free themselves from becoming Ewok dinner, is cos a direct escape would have been considered an abject threat and the Ewoks would have attacked. This way, tricking them into believing they "pissed off their diety" makes freeing the rebels their choice, thus becoming allies.
@brianalambert1192
@brianalambert1192 5 месяцев назад
On the Leia and Luke being siblings thing. I'll give them credit that it was not the original plan. If it was, I think they would have worked it differently, obviously. That being said, I do think the twist is important. I used to be able to explain this thought well, and I'm not able to anymore, so bear with me. Luke's story goes from "Can Luke defeat this great evil" to "Will Luke become this great evil" and then to "Can Luke save Vader?" That last question cannot be addressed until the second one is, and we know Luke well enough that the only thing that would cause him to turn is his love for his friends and family. Vader therefore needs a reason to go after someone in Luke's life, but someone who is terribly important. Leia being Luke's sister is the most dangerous role she could have. It's not just that she's going to be killed, they're going to try to turn her (for anyone who knows what goes into that training, not fun). So not only does this add a level of protection on Luke's side for her, it paints a target on her back much worse than before, and Luke knows it. If she was just someone he cared about who happened to be force sensitive, Vader and the Emperor wouldn't have pursued her half as much as they would knowing she's Vader's child. This was their trump card and it's the only thing that could have pushed Luke to the dark side as it so nearly does. I And when he is pushed to the dark side, and he sees that he is following Vader down his path, that's the moment of truth. The moment Luke wins by denying his destiny and throwing his lightsaber away, and without which Vader could not have been turned. On a side note, someone came up with an in universe explanation on Luke and Leia "knowing" they were siblings. They theorized that they felt a connection to each other through the Force but didn't know what it was, so they assumed it was attraction. But when Leia kissed Luke, they felt something was wrong and so they didn't pursue it any further. Quite frankly, it's the only explanation I've heard that makes it less weird

Loved your OT reactions. Keep it real Coby, it will serve you well. ;) As for Leia's outfits, specifically her gold one... that is a slave outfit (chain and collar) and Jabba has had many slave girls (green girl at the start of RotJ was also collared and chained). The reason it fit is because there would be a whole collection from which they would choose one to fit her. Yes, all the boys loved and still love Leia in her slave outfit. ;) I can't explain the Ewok dress though (especially since Ewoks did not have woven cloth knowledge). "Empire" is and will always be my favorite (love all the OT though). Sorry to break it too you but no, the Ewoks were not universally loved, that is mostly a chick and kid thing. Oh, one last thing... Luke seeing his father's mechanical hand and then looking at his own made him realize that he was starting down the same path as his father (becoming him) which helped him turn from the Dark Side. EDIT: OK, one last last thing. 😆 The reason Yoda died so close to Luke returning is he was using the force to help keep himself alive until Luke returned. Once he did and he parted the knowledge he had to, he let go.

Glad you finally got to meet the Ewoks. The primary Ewok Leia meets was supposed to be played by Kenny Baker, the actor who plays R2-D2 when he dances, but he was ill the day they shot the scene. The part was instead played by an 11 year old actor with dwarfism named Warwick Davis. Return of the Jedi was his first movie. In his honor, the Ewok is named Wicket W. Warwick. A lot of his mannerisms (the head tilts mostly) are based on his grandmother’s dog and the way it reacted to strange noses.

"How come they keep getting abducted by people who happen to have outfits ready for her?" Because Lucas Entertainment needs to keep selling toys, obviously!

"I wonder what his story is." You'll find that out in the prequels as it's about how The Emperor became an emperor and how the democratic Repbublic turns into the tyrannical Empire, and also how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader and how he got into that suit. It also shows how the Jedi fell and almost became extinct.

Hey Colby, If Luke lusting after his sister wasn't bad enough, think about Vader unknowingly torturing his own daughter...

At the time George wrote A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, George didn't have the idea to make Luke and Leia brother and sister. When someone asked him about it after this, he laughted and said "Yeah, well, ignore that. lol"

I heard that too, but we know in TESB Yoda states "There is another" and Luke uses the Force to contact Leia when he is hanging from Cloud City. Seems like Lucas at least was planting the seeds of the possibility.

Vader was being kept alive by two things: his hatred, and the suit. He lost both of those when he killed the Emperor, hence his rapid decline in health and ultimate death.

The reason why Yoda wasn't so gung ho about Luke continuing his training ("Nah, you good" as you put it) is because Luke had been hanging out at Ben's old house on Tatooine, learning from ancient Force artifacts called holocrons. That's how he learned to build a new lightsaber after his old one (his dad's, ironically) was lost on Bespin when his hand was cut off.

I also think they wanted him to stay before he confronted Vader so they could tell him the truth, but he left. So finishing his training was getting to a point where he was ready to find out the truth, but at this point in Jedi he already knows the truth.

Sebastian Shaw was only in the Vader suit for the moment when Luke unmasks Anakin, and for the bit when you see Anakin as Force Ghost (originally, ever since the DVD version he was replaced with the young Anakin played by Hayden Christensen during the shoot of Episode III, to show that Anakin Skywalker died as a person when he turned into Darth Vader).
@jameslinham2733
@jameslinham2733 3 месяца назад
Except, he regained his Anakin self just before he died after saving his son. Therefore, he died as Anakin with the face of Sebastian Shaw. Replacing the force ghost Shaw with Hayden Christensen makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It was an utterly disgraceful way to treat Shaw.

@jameslinham2733 He got paid and didn't live to see the change. I doubt he would've cared plus I always felt that Shaw was a terrible casting choice for Vader under the mask, the man was older than Alec Guinness. He looked and sounded more like Luke's grandfather than his father. They should've just put make up on Prowse and kept him as the man in the suit.
@mevb

@@ricardoquintero7160 I thought it worked as Vader was so damaged because of his burns he got on Mustafar and he spend most of the time inside the suit, only being out of it in a bacta tank occassionally or having his helmet off in his meditional chamber which had the right amount of air pressure so he could breathe without the help of his iron lugn, which he couldn't do normally (or at least only temporarily when he had to, such as Obi-Wan damaged his regulator panel and slashed his helmet in Obi-Wan Kenobi series, he couldn't for long periods of time as his lugns were so damaged from being fried at Mustafar, Bacta could only heal so much hence why he needed the suit and the iron lugn, that's why he died in Jedi when Sidious' Force Lightning damaged the life support beyond repair and there was no time to replace it before it was too late or at least Luke didn't have the means at the time, besides the Death Star II was about to blowup anyway). Because of this, sunlight would be bad for his damaged skin and the air quality outside the mask was unsufficient for his damaged lungs, he got so pale for not seeing the sun for twenty plus years, it was appropiately that he looked like a really old man. It was a good thing that for the DVD edition that they digitally removed the eyebrows as they wouldn't have survived being burned off if his head hair couldn't (it is not logic).

@@ricardoquintero7160 Prowse? That would be a truly terrible idea. As someone who has heard him speak, there is no way he could possibly portray the dying Anakin.

@mevb Damn dude, you went off on a real tangent. No one is claiming that Anakin wasn't severely damaged, his look is fine, but Shaw was 80+ at the time. His voice, tone, his manner of speaking, it was indicative of an older man, not a man handicapped by his health or pain.

So to answer your question about there being dresses for her. It’s a dark answer. Jabba had one most likely from another female who was executed. The Ewoks had a spare dress since they liked to keep trinkets… and they ate the woman who wore it before. Also on the Death Star you’ll hear blasters firing… there are no rebels onboard. They’re.. offing themselves.
