that is one of the best landing ive ever seen espesially in kai tak on a rainy day the runway lights were perfect 2 red 2 white amazing i wish i was that pilot
for me is perfect the music, is the perfect contrast between the stress that can feel one pilot when land in kai tak, and the calm down that you can stay when you hear this music, exelent video and really good music
I remember taking off from Kai Tak a couple of times back in 1982. On one flight, we were ascending when the engines seemed to go silent and the plane started to fall. I started white-knuckling the arms of my seat. I don't know why but it was apparently normal for the pilot to ease off power and let the aircraft descent for a few moments. Hong Kong in the early 80's, what a great a time. At the luxurious Chungking Mansions at that!
ethicomm It’s the pilot putting the aircraft in climb power and reducing the climb rate, as you don’t need that much power when climbing and take off power generates a lot of noise
I landed at Kai Tak airport in 1982 at the tail end of a typhoon. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. Those pilots were made of the right stuff.
The singer is Anggun from Indonesia, a very beautiful and talented singer songwritter. I love her voice and think it is very apt for a video of Hong Kong. Don't get angry if it does not turn your prop.
for this approach into Kai Tak's runway 13, is IGS not ILS because ILS lines them up with the runway ans can even have the plane land itself. IGS had to descend and line up with the "checkerboard" and then the turn to line up with the runway is manual, without the aid of the autopilot. So technically, Rwy 13 IGS is a modified ILS.
In1988 I climbed upto the "chequer board" as seen around 1.20 in this clip. There was a very mad dog behind a barb wire fence! Settled for a vantage point a few meters lower and watched landings as the sun went down over the islands in the distance......pretty cool view. I suffered vertigo like sensations when walking back down the steep narrow steps on the side of concreted hill.....was worth the trip up though!
AMAZING LAND... It must had been one of the toughest airport to land... You almost don't have time to straighten up the airplane... Congratulation for all pilots who could land in that airport!
I wonder if that heavy rock music piped into the cockpit got on the pilots' nerves and spoiled their concentration. Or pumped them up for the landing 🤟🏼
This is Hong Kong's old airport, Kai Tak. This is a normal flight path, crews had to be specially trained and certified before they are able to serve flights there
yes your certainly right sometimes traffic has to stop cause the smog is so thick its impossible to drive through its crazy ness over there and they arent stopping soon, its only getting worse
Nope. Singer is Amy Lee from USA, with the band Evanescence. Do a quick RU-vid search for "evanescence bring me to life" and the original video shows up.
Eh, it's kinda difficult to avoid flying over densely populated areas when you're trying to land in an airport in a city with a high population. They can try to minimize the risk as much as possible, but still, you gotta fly over some people to get to an airport in a big city, it's just how it works. As for the mountains, they do have instruments to tell them how far they are from the ground, and what is in front of them. It shouldn't be a concern for a good pilot.
Fantastic video! I had the privilege of landing there a couple of times about a year before they closed the airport. Was an unexpectedly awesome experience the first time, and was still as awesome the next and last time. What is the name of the music you have in the background?
@AirbusFreak100 yes, you could fly from VHHH-VHHX which is the New HK International airport, or you could take off from ZGGG, ZGGG-VHHX is about 20 min to fly :)
i think laning in this airport is a challenge for pilots. specially if there is crosswind or fog. i saw couple of videos .. pilots had got hard tym 2 landing here.
Yes I am taking full flaps into account. From this weeks Flight International: "An a320, with full slats/flaps, lands at 125kt." so I doubt a 747 will be slower. you may be thinking of GS; if you had a 20kt headwind yes 110Gs would be right..... but it would always be 130KIAS!
Youre not taking full flaps into account. And im not talking about what you can find out from a sim. When the wheels touch, average speed is 110 knots depending on the landing of course. In mid air without flaps its pretty easy to stall going 130 knots in a 747. It depends on altitude, air pressure, and wind speed/direction. Im sure plenty of pilots have landed their over-sea trip doing 135 kt, but the average in that particular craft is 110. I should know.
no lol! you're thinking about FSX, and more importantly, the default aircraft on FSX. If you buy the PMDG 747 for example, a very lifelike 747 with correct physics etc, you can safely fly at 130Kt (full flaps) without stalling.
it's called ILS: Instrument landing system. It provides information for glidescope and airport heading. Just turn at the right time and you're lined up, whether you can see the runway or not.
400 ipods, phones and cameras all on at the same time would probably cause a bit of interference (not necessarily danger) - one video camera will do no harm whatsoever
well, when its on autopilot its pretty easy, 36kt crosswind lands at Kai Tak are pretty hard, I suggest you buy a flight simulator like FSX, then buy the PMDG 747-400, that'll be about as real as it gets if you don't have a pilots license ;)
Hi there, I am a newly qualified pilot for B.A and I am actually writing this onboard a 747. I cheated the test and this is my first flight. I am about 20 nautical miles from the new hong kong airport and the little screen says that I'm 8,500 feet - could someone please tell me how to land this thing! Should I just push the wheel thingy down, then pull up at the last second? should I reduce thrust? Thanks!
it was going alot faster than that lol... S/o speed for 747 is prly over a 100 kts and if u look at the runway it was going over the 500 foot markers on the runway every couple seconds. not possible going 100 km/h
