I used to have friends who lived in Playa de Vargas - That little settlement you can see around 5:20 which aligns to RWY 03R - I used to lie their on their roof terrace and watch 1 plane after the other pass by to land - I felt like a kid in the candy store!
yes, right now there are some problems and rectriccion with the distance, and the windmills can interfere with the ATC radar and some landing systems, I am from Gran Canaria, and mechanical engineer and we can some problems with AENA, we want to build more windmills in that area (because is where the quality of the wind is the best), but also is where the airport is (also for that reason), the direcction of the wind normally is 30º North-south (runway 03L)
I forgot to say, that as far I know, right now, because the renewable energy is very important for the island as the airport of course, and that is the only good place to locate the windmills, the airport is working in a software that detect the interferences that comes from the windmills and ingnore them.
