In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” Assistant Curator of Sculpture Giulio Dalvit discusses the history behind a 16th-century medal by Leone Leoni depicting the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria. Currently on view on the third floor of Frick Madison, this maritime-themed medal was cast by the artist as a token of gratitude to its subject, who singlehandedly freed Leone after the artist was sentenced to a galley in the admiral’s fleet. As Andrea Doria waged war on pirates in the western Mediterranean, this week's complementary cocktail is grog, preferred drink of sailors and pirates alike.

Grazie, Giulio! (I greatly appreciate the exact enunciation of your Italian double consonants.) Reading the iconography: that's the challenge we face regarding art from the past. [And the present, too: I bought a T-shirt in Hong Kong that said "No Doubt I Deserved My Enemies;" illustrated with a dog and a bumblebee - when I said "read the iconography" to the two kids I was with, the kids' mother rolled her eyes.] It never dawned on me why Neptune would never appear on a ship! Classic iconography! But the most engaging part of this episode is the bond of friendship between Doria, Leoni, Titian, et al. That's a Masterpiece Theater series I'd watch!

Wonderful! This is a good example of an object that I would have walked passed at the Frick, but thanks to this entertaining and informative talk it is something I can look for and appreciate when I visit there. Thank you!

Mr. Davit, Thank you so much for making a mundane medal that is to an untrained eye so fascinating. But I find it hard to believe that Titian's portrait of the gentle, refined young man could be Leone Leoni, who seemed to have such a violent nature.

Yet another wonderful look at an artist who employed his skills to tell a particular story not only of his patrons but his own story at as well. It is noteworthy how the statue of Charles V can be altered to provide an alternate version of the image of the ruler if he should so desire. I wonder if the idea has it's roots in the Spanish custom of religious statues that are actually dressed in elaborate robes that can be changed seasonally to enact ritual transformation according to the needs of liturgical year.

Congratulations and thank you. A detail : Philip II was not emperor but king of Spain ( and many other places). Ferdinand was the successor of his brother Charles V as emperor.

LMAO@ the choice of grog. Because of course. I always knew Andrea Doria as the ill-fated ship that sank when I was a kid. Good to know some of his actual story.

Not a lucky name for the ocean liner. Interesting about Titian's son, "with friends like that, who needs enemies." Leoni had parents of little imagination or big egos, in case you missed it the first time. Leoni was a handsome fellow. Thank you, good job.
