I just don't get how we got from that great blob of a plant to a bar of Milk chocolate. The same could be said of many foodstuffs we take for granted in todays world. I mean how did we get to making bread & cakes. Who thought to mix those ingredients together, To cook them etc. I mean to make flour in the first place never mind add yeast, milk or eggs. And then for these recipes to go from mouth to mouth and eventualy world wide to where we are today. It just boggles my mind.

The thing is, most things we eat today were totally nonexistent only a couple of centuries ago. The only real reason why food is so "crazy" today is because we're able to apply all the little pieces of wisdom we accumulated from accidents over the centuries and create something solely based on science. For example, the first chocolate bar was made in 1847. Till then, chocolate has always been a drink.
@dolenzmcqueen8316
@dolenzmcqueen8316 5 лет назад
abingleyboy I know, I think of things like that too. I remember in Catholic school when I was a child the Nun told us how cooking was discovered. That people had pigs in a shelter and it went on fire, after the fire they were picking up the burnt pigs and one guy burned his hand on a burnt pig and put his finger in his mouth and the grease from the pig tasted good, so they began cooking with fire..LOL...sounds pretty nutty to me...It could have been, but I don't think so. II think it was way before people were putting animals in shelters. Maybe it happened with a forest fire or cavemen putting there meat next to a warming fire and some of the meat got cooked by being too close to the fire? I don't know. Who really does?

Every food comes from fruit technically. Any food is originally from a processed fruit. Whether it be as simple as you taking a plant and fermenting it like this cacao bean... or something as complex as eating a turkey that eats bugs that eats fruits. It’s the cycle of my life my friend. And the further down the line something is, the less it is something. Meaning everything along the way takes and burns some of that energy and nutrient. This is why most processed meats are worthless for nutrients but seeds are the richest of all.

Emmy PLEASE try out one of my childhood fruits. It's called a guaba (with a b, not a v). It's a very long woody flat fruit that's filled with something similar to what you saw and tasted in the cacao fruit. I think they might be related. You crack it open by twisting it. The white part is super super smooth and fluffy, until you put it in your mouth and it becomes this sweet, juicy thing that's just delicious. It's much sweeter and smoother than the cacao fruit. The seeds are large and pitch black, and in my childhood in the Caribbean we used to use those to play made up games or asked adults to poke holes in them to make jewelry with string.

i've eaten so many of these growing up. tastes AWESOME!!! sweet and sour at the same time!!! i'm from the Caribbean and we have them on my island. we use it to make cocoa sticks, which we then use to make cocoa tea. we usually dry the beans in the sun for a few days and then roast to remove the skin. after which the beans are grinded down into a powder; (can get messy according to the fat content of the beans). powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, bay leaves are added to the cocoa powder and rolled into sticks. the sticks are then air dried and stored in the fridge as heat tends to melt the sticks due to fat content. to make the cocoa tea, just add some water, cinnamon and or bay leaves, nutmeg and a cocoa stick to a pan and bring to boil. leave until the cocoa stick is melted. then add some more water and then milk. sweeten to your taste. for added texture some regular flour is mixed with a little water and added to the cocoa tea. remove from heat when tea starts to thicken. you can add as much flour as you like!! i personally like it on the thick side. hope u get to make this one. i totally love it!!!! as for measurements, i don't have as we never measured anything when making this lol. some like it strong, whereas others don't like it as strong

That is so fascinating! I would really love to try this, but I'm afraid I'd totally screw it up so I would want someone to make it authentically first. I'm always afraid to try making new recipes on my own (because as I said above, I know I would mess it up big time!) Lol But thank you for sharing this, Carla!!! I love learning about other cultures and their food!!!

I tasted cocoafruit years ago and LOVED it. I mushed it into a pulp and mixed it with green tea, and the antioxidants were off the charts. It let me function from early morning to early-to-mid afternoon. I agree, it’s kind of flowery, like vanilla. Mildly tart. Extremely refreshing.
