Best review so far (and I checked a few) on iPad app available for coding. I just recently started a data science project which requires me to write a code in python (which I knew nothing about a few weeks ago) and have been wondering to which extent I could use my iPad to write the code. Surprisingly, there are quite a few apps online as can be seen in this review and i did not want to buy one just to realize another is better suited and free !. Thanks for having tested and reviewed, but please make an updated review to see if these apps have overcome their previous limitations !

I did on the iPad actually. I used luma fusion to edit this particular video which edits in a different resolution. Otherwise the experience is full screen

Good question. No pyto can’t access tf nor external gpu support. This is a limitation of iOS.

Hi I may be a college student that studies data science in the upcoming months would you recommend buying an ipad pro or go with macbook pro? I personally want to get an ipad pro as I can take notes more easily but I am afraid that it can not handle the data science part and do well with coding Hoping to get a reply🙏🏻

I would say if your speciality is data science then at this stage I would recommend a laptop. However with developments happening the way they are you can get by with an iPad Pro especially if you do your development in cloud which is becoming more popular. Tho if you are running large projects with a bunch of data and gpu/cpu intensive workflows you may be better off with a laptop. I will be digging deeper into the iPad ecosystem to determine how good of a fit it really is for data science, automation and development so stay tuned

hi I'm starting university in the fall, I'll be taking several computer science classes, this year they're all python. I have a desktop computer at home but would like to potentially use my iPad if I'm not at home. which app should I get?

You have a few options. 1) get an app like pythonista or pyto for development strictly on the iPad. Both are great but have their own limitations 2) get a VNC tool that will enable you to remote into your home pc and code remotely either through an IDE on your PC or run something like code server through a browser 3) get a server like digital ocean and run the ide like code server or Jupiter server. I would still suggest students stick with a laptop for now however if you have a PC at home and want to make the most of your iPad, you can definitely make it work

what are the biggest cons to code ipads instead computer? ı am not dealing with big files or projects.ı just need for data science and machine learning on pyhton.Also jupyter is a good choice. Is it useful for me.should ı buy sir ?

I don’t believe any iOS app supports it but the closest would by pythonista to my knowledge that supports game development but uses its own modules. Checkout pythonista scene

I'm a CS student and my dad just wrecked his MBP screen on which I used to code so I need an app ASAP. What do u recommend. I want something that's as close to the desktop version and which allows the most packages.

I would actually suggest you run vscode server on a raspberry Pi or public cloud instance. Alternatively you can use Google colab on any device since it’s cloud enabled. While these apps are great, the iOS system is far too restrictive

@@SATSifaction I started using Carnets and PYTO on the iPad.The only issue with web based coding serivces are that they are still in beta and mostly will be subscription based and the rpi thing is just too expensive for me to do.

You have to check with the app of interest. Generally the restriction is apple and not so much the IDE vendor.

unfortunately not however you can always ssh into an external server or raspberry pi to code if that helps. This is an iOS restriction

You can get by with an iPad Pro but for a student i would still recommend a laptop. Ipad is limited to some python and c apps...i havent found anything that is stable for java

Are those apps running locally, so you can code and compile/run totally offline, or do they require you to be online since they send your code to a remote server to be compiled and run?

You can code locally on these apps. The only time you need a connection is when you are running the IDE on a remote server

I have 512GB and how much is a question based on your usage. If for work and school/personal life then I’d suggest 256 at the minimum. I do video editing too which is why I opted for 512.

This is bad advice based on a bad premise from a developer who has done nothing. You'd be better off on a junky x86-64 Dell laptop from 2012 that only works when it's plugged in because the battery is shot.

The advantage of using an iPad as a dev-environ is portability and battery duration. There are several things that work much better on a dedicated server, for that, I use cheap $5/month VMs. Always available and less hassle than lugging a full laptop around.

Yes, there’s definitely use cases. I am traveling internationally and will have an ipad Pro M2 12.9” with me anyway. Don’t want to lug my gaming laptop too for GPUs. I probably won’t code anything heavy, but it’s a security blanket. If I need to train some LLM model, I already know how to use a cloud server, but internet connection from Asia to AWS in Virginia of Seattle may be slow. Not sure what kind of bandwidth I will have at different places as I move around. I am thinking of Juno for data science and Pyto or Python Interpreter for terminal execution.

Why? He didn’t tell you these apps would make you a python pro, he’s not telling you an iPad is the future for coding. He’s literally just reviewing what’s available on iPad and was pretty clear that there were limitations. Some people have a desktop computer at home and an iPad on the go. And some people just want to dip their toe in the water when it comes to learning about it

let me help you with something . sell your iPad !!!!! I own 2018 3rd gen in my opinion it really really doesn't worth it. you can buy a nice laptop with that price Thank you for the videos.
