Code Zero Singlehanded Sailing on a Modern Sailboat

This time I up the game from the last Singlehanded sailing video. This time I get into racing mode, and do everything to go fast from maximum sail trim, maximum pointing and then use the Code Zero on the downwind stretch all by myself.
There's much more to learn but first time I've done the complete circle of go-fast items by myself.

I use to work on software for an advertisement company in the early 2000's , I have a diploma in programming ,and certs in database management, design, etc. Networking certs, use to run a small server and hosted a few small sites back before the modern need for Cdns but walked away from it all to work on the ocean. I love the Ocean and see it as one of the last places on earth that you are truly alone. I respect this for so many reasons, but mostly because I know the thought process to the "Why", fair winds.

Who you gonna call. when covid strikes . six knots with 8 knots breeze is awesome . a tantamount to your sailing skills and excellent yacht design .every skipper will turn into a racer when another Yacht appears on the scene .

We used to go skiing and took turns driving the boat, we were taught to try not to create wakes for other boats. Thanks for the sailing lesson and now I have some new vocabulary to learn as well😁

I love big foresails. Except, one day three of us got a good tight spinnaker wrap while sailing through the commercially moored ships in lower NY harbor. Unwrap the chute and dodge the ships all at the same time. Felt just a pinball trying to miss the flappers.

Rob, Have you found the saying " a ship/boat is a hole in the water to throw money down" to be in-escapeably true or have you picked up some tips to conquer that as well? In Mexico where I was stationed at one time a Granny was sharing her method of shielding loved ones from germs (colds ...etc) Easy as mincing raw garlic & mixing in raw honey taking a tablespoon one to 3 times a day : ) works pretty good while a friend from London says to carry a clove or two in the mouth for the same effect ~ ez, right ?

IIRC Oday were out of England, so the boats tend to be solid, heavier, less ventilated, and definitely not light air boats.

Hello Rob. I work at the fire station there in MDR. My wife and I have a deposit on a 41’ motor boat which delivers in January. My dilemma is that the dealership just received a 45’ sailboat that I think would be better for us. The problem is that my wife is afraid of sailing because we don’t know how to do it. She is afraid of the unknown. Respectfully, I’m asking if I could come crew on your boat one of these days that’s convenient for you. I don’t expect you to teach me how to sail, or to baby sit me while you take your boat out. I would just like to see how easy single handed sailing really is. I could buy you lunch and pay for fuel for your troubles. Thanks for the consideration -Jerry

Any chance you're going to outfit the boat with a computer running OpenCPN or something similar? Seems right up your alley and there's not much in the way of updated RU-vid content on open source solutions for sailors since the chip shortage.
@robbraxmansailing
@robbraxmansailing Год назад
I did try OpenCPN on my older boat. But this boat is fully equipped with Raymarine so no need for that.

A couple of rollers on the bow lifelines might help the Code Zero pop over. Or, sometimes just giving the lifeline one good thump will carry enough motion foward to help the headsail snap over.
@robbraxmansailing
@robbraxmansailing 2 года назад
Are you talking about gybing? We do not gybe the code zero. Really difficult to do. We have to furl and then unfurl. When it's furled, velcro holds the clew in place.
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 2 года назад
@@robbraxmansailing Not necessarily for gybing. It just seemed that your sail was hung up on the lifeline.

What boat is that? I see it’s a Dufour. So many boats do not have a traveller now.
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 2 года назад
You could ask a loft to sew two draft stripes onto the main. That makes it easier to see the sail shape and tune it. All in all not really expensive.
@robbraxmansailing
@robbraxmansailing 2 года назад
There's a full length batten so it's like a draft stripe though it's white. Using that as a guide, the sail is extremely flat. So I was sailing it as twisted as possible with no outhaul. Just to give it a little fullness. Traveller to weather, and loose mainsheet. Maybe it's because it's such a new sail. Or I think the mast bend is flattening it.

I Single hand my Tayana 47 way easier than what your doing no electric winches I get it going and trimmed in no time what so ever. I also have all my sheets in the cockpit for the Genoa, staysail and the Main I raise at the mast. I do like watching your sail videos by the way.
@robbraxmansailing
@robbraxmansailing 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! The main challenge here is the complexity of a code zero which fortunately is easier than a spinnaker. I could never hoist the spinnaker on my old boat. I needed a crew of 8. Anyway this shows a bit of contrast on a fully automated boat where most of the work is done by my finger. Though the brain part continues to stress since my objective here was to go fast as if I were racing. :) Just recalling the parts of the spinnaker. tack line, Pole topping lift, pole downhaul, guy, sheet, tweakers, then gybing the thing. Even an Asso wasn't that much easier. Here we just unfurl. But we don't gybe a code zero. You have to furl to gybe and then unfurl.

Seriously, an electric relief band is the only thing besides scop that prevents seasickness for me. Follow the instructions for placement exactly. It was FDA tested and approved to prevent morning sickness during pregnancy, so there's objective proof it can prevent nausea.
@robbraxmansailing
@robbraxmansailing 2 года назад
I eat ginger candy before I go! Seems to work. But if I have to do lots of stuff at the bow or go below then I reach a limit of what it can do. I've sailed with such bad seasickness all my life and previously relied on the relief band on long distance races. But ginger works better
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 2 года назад
@@robbraxmansailing During the Apollo program NASA researched motion sickness. Turns out that ginger is a rubifacient (turns your face pinker) because it dilates the capillaries, which allows increased oxygen flow in the body. And yes, it does work for many people, but it is considered one of the less powerful meds for this. Which is why NASA.moved on to other drugs. But if it works for you...

@@robbraxmansailing I don't know if it will work for you, but I have found that gummy candies help me with nausea. Anything like gummy worms, cinnamon bears... all of those kinds of candies. Especially 'gummy raspberries' or 'gummy blackberries' (Like 'Haribo Berries'). Those things are amazing for nausea. I think it's anything with gelatin in it, including Jello. It might not be as practical, but mint ice cream or mint ice cream sandwiches also are very effective for me.

If the wind stopped to zero wind, how many miles can you go with just the motor?. It has happened to me running out of gas in a car. Has this happened>? what do you do? with no wind and no gas?
