Codebreaker, OPL, and USB Black Loading Screen Fix (2020)

In a previous video tutorial, I've demonstrated how to use Codebreaker 10 with OPL and USB to apply cheats to your USB games. Today's tutorial is similar, except this time we will address the black loading screen that many gamers have experienced and have lost sleep over.
The short answer: Remove your USB after your started codebreaker. Select your cheats, start game, plug the USB back in, and boot game via OPL.

April 5th update: I updated the .zip file to v1. The two file names inside the BOOT folder should be "CB_launch.elf" and "CODEBREAKER10.ELF". Yes, it is lowercase ".elf" for the CB_launch. This way when codebreaker has finished executing, it should properly autoload OPL now.
You can put both files into the BOOT folder on your memory card if you have space, or just put the CB_launch.elf only into the memory card.
After you load codebreaker and start game, it will autoload OPL from memory card. Just make sure to remove the USB if you see black screen upon launching codebreaker.

Ps2rd I'm having a issue with predator concrete jungle that is just a black screen I got the external hard drive to work finally instead of mini partition tool I use GUI format and pop in the PS2 and it loaded up but with ps2rd Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks the cheats aren't activating in the game

I'm not familiar with ps2rd yet and if it has compatibility issues and what not. Does the game have a master cheat code that you got to enable first, and then the subsequent cheats? See the tutorials at ps2-home.com for more info

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I fixed it for ps2rd got them working except a few games keep giving me a black screen and a couple games to codes are an active so I'm going to pop it back in and go to Omni convert and then try and find the codes again and try and put them back in unencrypted form

I having trouble loading up codebreaker after I select the game and plug in the USB. I went to settings on opl and changed the settings but everytime I get to the plug the USB back in after I selected the codes but I get the black screen. Please help

only trick that works for me on the slim is during game boot, simply wake up the usb stick by removing it and adding it to the other port while it is trying to load ( you will notice when the led stops blinking on the 1st usb then its time to drop it in the 2nd usb) this woked with shox and ridge racer after bin was converted to iso , so i think its either an electrical contact issue or a usb voltage issue so it will varies with your slim unit .i might try a diff power supply or spray more electrical contact fluid

Wow, that is really unique solution. I was going to suggest cheat device as an alternative, but keep on doing what you are doing and thanks for sharing the unique solution. That would never cross my mind to do ever.

Hello, sorry to disturb, but I just got my Free MCboot card and I downloaded some games on my 32 GB flash drive, but every time I try to load a game from the drive, the screen just stays black or white depending on the game. Is there any way to fix this ?

Remove the usb thumb drive before running the app, but if still have issues try cheat device instead

UPDATE! SMB works for me using the Codebreaker.elf and an older OPL: OPL_1564_DB-TA_all-7fd6d50-2019-02-25 renamed to CB_Loader.elf, after choosing cheats , selected start game, it restarts into OPL then choose the game want to play and BAM! Awesome, time to play some Ys, Good Job! Keep the good contents rolling

Few questions: 1) What happens if you use a different version of OPL, what happens then? 2) Are you running CB_Loader.elf and Codebreaker from USB or from memory card? Update: I got it working from memory card with newest OPL and codebreaker, v1 zip file uploaded.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia 1) If I use another version of OPL It hangs at the loading screen of OPL after 30 sec no rom selection. 2)I ran the working OPL and renamed it to CB_Loader.elf from 8GB USB stick Fat32 formatted. I'll try to run from Memory card but its already full with other apps

I dont really use CodeBreaker now. I use the Cheat Device app I found in ps2-home forum. Its based in the ps2rd engine and uses RAW unencrypted codes.

I haven't tried a USB HDD but on my 100 wireless network I have 500 PS2 ISO files on a 6TB USB 3.0 external HDD connected to my server and it takes 30 secs to show the list of games I have on SMB. Yours should be faster direct USB HDD. Maybe you may need to defrag your HDD?

@@MrAlan1828 I have two external hard drives one Seagate 1tband one maxone 500gb my 64gb flash drive works just fine I ordered another external hard drive from a list of known devices to work I hope it does I hope its here tomorrow

I’m having a issue loading codebreaker though my premade opl card I got from Amazon. I’m using it on a slim and it won’t open. I even tried the method you did and still nothing. It works on my fat model but not my slim 7700 series. I’m not sure why because when I first bought it , it worked on my slim….. any ideas?

The only problem with manhunt 1 max Payne 1 and 2 the suffering 2.... Help with that freeMacboot version 1.953 slot 2 & cannot save any files with manhunt 1 says corrupt date No one helps The suffering 2 just get frozen sometimes not all the time max Payne 2 Cannot play chapter 2 .. 1-5 chapter 3 1-3 game freeze on me can only play chapter 1 and the end of the game I don't know if it the Moon jump on should have something to do with the game not running right maybe

Yo everyone I don't know where to ask my question but do you think it would be possible to replace one of the USB ports 1.0 of the ps2 with 2.0 ports or higher by welding them ?? for better performance especially for the problem of fmv of the games

Doesn't matter since the ps2 back then was programmed at 1.1 speeds, usb 2.0 didn't exist I don't think back then at least not common place like usb 3 and usb c is nowadays

I run mine from the memory card the screen does go black for a moment probably about 5 minutes tops and then code breaker loads and everything is fine I'm using a fat PS2 with an internal hard drive so there's no removing anyting involved.

I have my OPL in disguise also but it is copied into the __boot folder on my HDD. The CodeBreaker file is on my Memory Card. Works perfectly fine. No USB needed. Only thing you'd probably need a USB is to copy your original OPL file and rename it to CB_launch.elf to disguise it since you can't rename it on the PS2.

Not sure if the codebreaker is the issue, or the game or usb. Try without and see if game is ok or not.

Need help! I’m having an issue where I can load my cheats, it goes to OPL afterwards, I load up the game up then the game before it gets to the start menu; the game runs flawlessly when I load it WITHOUT the cheats though.

I have a fat ps2 with no modchip also the disc driver is not plugged I mean no optical dvd drive is connected to the ps2.When I launch the elf it just freezes at a black screen I even removed every usb but still the same issue I eventried many versions still black screen.Note that when I created an iso for it it launches normally but when I select start device it stuck at black screen.any help would be great and sorry for the long comment

How about cheat device, same issue? Can you get an optical DVD drive, even if the laser is bad? Didn't know codebreaker would freak out about missing drive.

Anybody happen to know why these cheat devices, codebreakers/ARMAX causes micro stutters in every game? It happens with both PS2 hardware and PCSX2.

Hi,could someone help . I have a ps2 slim 90004 with the latest fortuna,i followed every step of the vid but the cheats dosen't seem to work.i tried codebreaker,cheat device and airmax 200.000. They all start the game but the cheats don't activate Tried with OPL 9.0 and disk,none of them work.

Hey my ps2 is slim 90004 and it has matrix infinity 1.93 does that mean I can just download games and put it in my pen drive and play? How do I access the opl ? Or get it installed where ? I have a problem. I booted up codebreaker and once I started playing a game, it crashed my ps2 and I could only get into funtuna through UlaunchELF and not the quickboot. And now every time I try the usb trick, no matter how many times I try to reinstall codebreaker it won't work. Could someone help?

I open codebreaker and then unplug my USB and I can select cheats and then start game and then I plug my USB back in but the game goes to opl loader and then I start my USB but it can't find my games. But if I go into opl loader from the home screen then the games load up fine with no cheats enabled. So idk why they won't load up the other way

Give cheat device a try and see if that changes anything. I know when you try to do these special cheat programs, all bets are off for game compatibility

I have a PS2 30006R console with modchip (I'm unsure which modchip was installed as it was done by a shop many years ago), I bought the latest free mcboot 1.966 online, stick it in the memory card slot and powered on the PS2. The free mcboot logo came up and then it's just black screen. I can access opl by holding the L1 button and play games from my hdd normally but i really want the free mcboot to load properly instead of booting up with the black screen all the time. I don't want to disassemble my PS2 and check out the modchip as I wouldn't know how to put it all back.

The problem is it should be FMCB 1.953 (which I install for my clients) because the latest 1.966 has issues with modchips (hence your black issue). If you have a fat ps2 internal hard drive, you could install FHDB and then from there reinstall fmcb to a memory card to a compatible earlier version.

Freezing I saw was due to usb inserted at the wrong time. If you get the game to load properly and it still freezes with cheats, consider looking into cheat device or ps2rd.

You need to remove the usb to get rid of black screen issue. Try cheat device, that is a better alternative.

Hi, sorry to bother you, my games are not appearing and i have OPL 1767 DB-TA. Im using a USB External Hardrive. I extracted the games using USBxtreme and Defraggler to Defragment them... In which part of the USB do they need to be stored?

Hey buddy. I have a question and I hope you could help me. I'm new to PS2 modding. And I'm having some issues: I got a PS2 Fat with a Matrix chip. I got a memory card with FreeMcBoot V1 (I can't update it bc it's a clone memcard, not the original one). Also, I got a SATA modem for it, so I can load the games from the modem. The thing is, I can't make codebreaker work. Everytime I try to boot it up from uLaunchElf v4.43a, my screen just freezes. It doesn't matter if I load it from the USB, the memcard or the Hdd. It goes to black screen and then the TV stops recognizing signal. The PS2 seems on (Out of the lights being still on) but I can't even get inside the Codebreaker. How could I make it work? 🥺 Thanks in advance. 💜

Love your videos man! Thank you for updating your tutorials and for contributing to keep the PS2 scene alive. I wrote to you the other day about the troubles I'm having via SMB. I did get connection and saw the menu with all the games but after minutes of sometimes seconds, the connection crashes. I have no idea what it could be happening; I tested different OPL versions, cables but it hasn't worked yet. I'll keep trying and I will also try this new method. I appreciate your work man, thank you and hats off!

every time I load codebreaker I cant select codes for the game I want the cursor just jitters when I try to scroll up or down and its stuck on the last game I played

I have tried cheat device and the save files read as corrupted when I try to go back and load them again. When I try to load this elf, it freezes at "Setting Up Cheats" splash screen. Any Ideas?

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia So I have gone a different route. I'm using OPLManager (kind of a pain that you cannot turn on/off cheats during game play, but it works just fine).

I got myself all PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games rom set. Huge library. My cds were all damaged anyways. Enjoying on retroarch with my 3 year old reliving those croc2 crash bandicoot days. Emulation has come off long ways from the decade back we used to try them. Not only are ps2 games fully playable.. buy even PS3 games are able to play, but that needs heavy PC setup.

@@MrAlan1828 Wow. That setup is amazing, that was what I wanted to do.. with Wii remote play motion gaming with my son. But my TV isn't able to support such, I was thinking of getting Nvidia shield, but now reconsidering getting something like your setup. Looks like a big project though. The mat and everything, is there anyone out there reselling to make profit the complete setup as you described ? I wouldn't mind paying o get the setup as I just spent 2 weeks on retroarch and acquiring formating game dumps to different formats for it to works and haven't yet got anything as close fun as yours.

There is no GoW 2 on the cheats list so i added my self but then it said there's no space at memory card. Is it a way that i can save it to usb? I have got 4 mb's of emty space btw.

Please respond Bobby reference me to you and have a question for you will this work on a internal hard drive as well with the codebreaker instead of the ople manger by putting the codes in that way and how do you disable and enable the codes you have to use the opl manger every time to do so or can you within the opl before you boot the game up thanks

Codebreaker has cheats so it should work, maybe consider cheat device as alternative.

The usb trick worked for me with black screen. Otherwise, try cheat device.
