Pretty much everyone knows what a codec is, right? Well not really, there are some technical distinctions I think you should know about, so I've made this video to clear things up easily!

Great job describing everything! I work in AV and constantly have to work with containers and codecs with play back and embedded videos in powerpoint so I appreciate the way you break everything down.

Lucid explanation , please continue making these amazing videos , there are very few like your video which step to enough depth to add ‘meat ‘ to the entire explanation , yet give a good macro picture of what is going on,I liked how you summed it all up in the end with 3 basic points .This is what sticks in the head , well done

A codec is not "software". A codec is an algorithm or a specification. A codec can be implemented as software or as hardware (or hybrid solutions). He often says "software" when he should have said "algorithm". He also said "codec" when he should have said "software" when listing different software implementations.

Okay, so I did some research and it turns out its both, at least according PC magazine and an article I read in EE times a CODEC is the hardware and the software: "A codec is a hardware circuit that performs the conversion from analog signals to digital data, and it is also software and/or hardware that further compresses the digital data into less space"

Thank you for this video dude. I am new to Technology, Again. I feel like I'm going through the 1986 7th grade computer class again. I am back in school for film and tv at LA Film School. This video is part of my class. I am editing with Final Cut Pro, and Man, It is crazy stupid hard. Technology has come waaaay to far since the 80's, I am trying to Embrace it.

I got a little confused at the MP3 part. You referred to it as a coding format. Wouldn't MP3 be a file container instead since it contains metadata?

MP3 is both a container and a codec.

+Lucas Williams I think it's both. the mp3 file container contains metadata as well as an audio stream encoded using the mp3 coding format.

How would you find out what the coding format is? Would you just pull up the properties of the file and where would it be there if so?

After watching your video I have a question for you, what is ID3 , I am a musician I had window 7 and all the music track that I had in the software used to play when I composed the melody, now with window 10 some of the track come up with this error message , saying to repair ID3 so how do you correct this ID3 and get your track to play like before.Thank you.

1:58: CODEC is derived from the words COmpress-DECompress, since the primary function of the CODEC is to reduce file size. Coding/Decoding does not necessarily mean that the file is going to be reduced in size for storage or transport, but only suggests that it will be encrypted and then de-encrypted for security purposes.

hey.. i have problem with youtube upload quality. its using a avc 1.6 codec which is causing my gopro footage to look bad. any ideas to force youtube to use the vp9 codec. footage is shot in 1080p at 60fps. i tried uploading it in 1440p at 24mbps but still uses avc and causes loss in quality

Hi, my export. I have a issue about avid codec in premiere in my pc. I installed the newest avid codec from avid website . Also have the newest quicktime player.... but when I finessed the editing in premiere and try to export in DNxHD 115 , I can find then QuickTime option , also I can find the DNxHD option . BUT, I can’t find avid codec option and much DNxHD color resolution . There are only a few DNxHD color resolution options , means I miss something . I don’t know what is the reason . Can you help me or somebody give me a hand

Will encoding h264 to apple prores make it easier for adobe premiere to preview while i edit?. I normally just drag the .mov file from my camera into adobe premiere, but the preview is laggy and slow. Please respond. someone.

Ummm. If you use Apple ProRes it is optimized to downsample from a higher quality in h264 or a better codec if you want native resolution (5K and below) I'd recommend using RAW for the first one, because h264 is worse than Apple ProRes.

im sry thiojoe im a little bad at this :D so,codec is the software to render the video and then h264 is kinda like the result of using x264 codec,(kinda like if you use x264 codec,you will get h264 file,like this?) and h264 is also kinda like the "real" (actual) type of file and then mp4 is like,it takes h264 file,and some sort of other type of audio,and then wraps is to make a real video so its a file container =) is it like that? :) pls reply it will mean a lot ;)

What about prores 4:2:2 and 4:2:0, 8 bit vs 10 bit.. profiles baseline main high and levels...

I have a video that I copied from my Cobra security camera onto USB in a security cam monitor box now I put it into my laptop do you have to be and it comes up coded I can't find anybody to help me to decode it what do I need to do I have to have it for a court case I can't I really need help how to transfer this video so I can look at it all I see right now are codes

Try to send a video to your email and then when you download it to your Windows 7, try to set the container to .mp6 and it still can play it in Windows Media Player.

I am really confused. The explanation given by Theo was spot on, however, I don't get the terminology. The link below is to a CODEC. It's an IC, integrated circuit that converts analog signals from microphones into digital signals that are processed by a DSP (digital signal processor). Then the processed digital signal is converted to an analog signal by a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). It gets gained up so it can drive your speaker, or in this case your headphones. So what gives? I assume that the CODEC Thio is talking about is the software that goes into the DSP? www.maximintegrated.com/en/products/analog/audio/MAX9867.html

From what I understand, "codec" stands not for "coder/decoder" but "compression/decompression" ; careful if you're using something like Wikipedia to get these terms.

No because not all codecs compress size.

ThioJoe while you're not wrong about codecs at large, *video* codecs pretty much exclusively compress video to x specification because raw footage is just stupid heavy. So not all codecs compress, but as far as I know, all video codecs do, to some extent.

"Codec is a portmanteau of coder-decoder." [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec ] I've heard both at different times, usually followed by a comment that representing "compressor/decompressor" was later adopted in addition, since it worked similarly, somewhat like a backronym in that it could be applied after the fact.
