At WrestleMania XL in April, Cody Rhodes defeated Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Championship, ending Reigns’ 1,316-day reign in a Bloodline Rules match. Afterward, Reigns took a break, and Solo Sikoa took over as leader of The Bloodline, kicking out Jimmy Uso and Paul Heyman, while adding Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, and Jacob Fatu. Sikoa called himself the new Tribal Chief.
Rhodes began feuding with the new Bloodline. At SummerSlam, Rhodes beat Sikoa in a Bloodline Rules match, despite interference from a returning Reigns. On the September 13 episode of SmackDown, Rhodes defended his title against Sikoa in a steel cage match and won, but was attacked by The Bloodline. Reigns surprisingly helped Rhodes. Later, Sikoa challenged Rhodes and Reigns to a tag team match at Bad Blood. Though Rhodes initially declined, Reigns said he didn’t need Rhodes’s help, calling it “family business.” After both were ambushed by The Bloodline, Rhodes and Reigns agreed to the tag match, making it official for Bad Blood.
