A young man tries to leave an abusive relationship.
COERCE is used with permission from Rory Wilson. Learn more at / rory__wilson .
Sam and Morgan are parents of a young child, Theo. They had a rough start as young parents, with Sam's tentative and skeptical reaction to Morgan's unplanned pregnancy. But they soldiered forward anyway despite their problems as a couple.
As Theo gets older, Sam grows into his role as a father and loves his son deeply. But his relationship with Morgan only gets more difficult. As the dynamic becomes more emotionally and physically violent, he must decide whether to leave for his safety or stay for the sake of his son.
Directed and written by Rory Wilson, this powerful short drama examines the subject of intimate partner violence from a new angle, from the perspective of a man being punished and controlled by his female partner. Beyond the agony and suffering of feeling torn between the need for escape and the desire to keep his family together, Sam's experience is also complicated by being a man in a situation where the victim is stereotypically a woman. It uniquely isolates him, one that imprisons him even more.
Visually striking and intimate in capturing Sam's subjectivity, the film begins in a jagged, disorienting way, opening with Sam being led into a police car and an introspective narration wondering how his son will grow up without his mother. Shuffling between past and present, we see shards of images and scenes: a confused Sam talking to his mother, conversations between Sam and Morgan, scenes of their togetherness and conflict, shoes stomping on Sam's glasses.
Very often images are shot at canted angles and in close-up, offering viewers a disorienting, Cubist-like intimacy, as well as a representation of Sam's compromised vision after his glasses are broken -- an event that proves forebodingly symbolic as the narrative and the relationship proceeds. As the story unfolds, the shattered pieces fall into place, offering a clear and disturbing snapshot of a troubled relationship, one that goes from difficult to cruel through a web of lies, manipulation and coercive control.
As Sam, actor Matt Rolls movingly portrays a young man increasingly bewildered and cowed by his partner, scared to say anything and clearly loving towards his son, who is the incentive for his staying. Actor Laura Masters also excels in modulating Morgan's coldness and punishment of Sam, beginning the character as a sphinxlike enigma and then slowly unmasking her as controlling and manipulative. That slow drip of toxicity happens so subtly at first that it literally and figuratively chips away at Sam's sense of self -- until he finds himself in a drastic situation and must decide once and for all what to do.
According to ManKind UK, one in four women and one in 6-7 men are victims of domestic violence in their lifetime. And more men than women in this situation consider ending their lives, a point brought to vivid life by COERCE. With such powerful, intimate storytelling, the film helps us understand why men stay silent and how desperate they must be when they finally speak up or get help -- and why we need to question the dictates of masculinity that penalize men for human vulnerability and suffering.

It wasn’t the first case in the U.K. won by a male survivor of domestic abuse (there had been others before that particular case). However, it was the first domestic abuse case involving a male victim and female perpetrator in which the woman was convicted of the offence of coercive control, which had recently been created in English law.

That's patently untrue. Men abuse women at painfully high numbers compared to the reverse, friend. You should try not to let yourself be so biased and appreciate the fact they are highlighting a very unusual dynamic that still does occur. Most abuse is by men toward women or men toward other men. Men have a problem with abusing their partners largely. Women, it's much rarer.
@000aleph
@000aleph 9 месяцев назад
@@ruesurnameunimportant4816 You're wrong there. The rate of domestic violence is not very different between the sexes, if at all. Plenty of studies have shown this. What's true is that due to the greater physical strength of men, women can have more severe injuries. But neither initiating violence nor responding violently is much rarer in women.

NEVER cried so much just watching a RU-vid video before 😭 I'm transgender (was from 7yo but hid it from everybody). I was in an abusive relationship. Ex-partner subjected me to 15 years of psychological domestic violence (PDV). It was continuous - just putting me down, hurting my feelings, never being satisfied, keeping me away from family and friends. Good cop/bad cop - one day being nice and the next making me cry. Day after week after month after year. I went into depressive psychosis - hearing voices from computer speakers or TV's abusing me. Thought I was schizophrenic but told nobody. I was not allowed to be ill. I'll never see my (grown up) children again but SO GLAD to escape (No violence, I'm a Buddhist). Transitioning now.

You know, I know this comment means well, but the truth is, one of the very real feelings that men who are abused deal with is the shame of feeling as though they have lost their manhood because they were in such a violently vulnerable position. Being told that they are being castrated only emphasizes those very same feelings of shame. Thus, considering you wish to be supportive, I would recommend using different language, instead, in order to show men the support they deserve.

It broke my heart to hear how shocked she was that everyone else just dismissed her son as a victim, and I was able to provide information & services to help him, and told her that "anyone can be a victim" & no judgement on whatever gender. Male Abuse is rarely talked about as men are made believe to be tough and just put up with it. I dated a girl who was lazy, moody, hostile, and she even owned up to wanting a kid for me just to get a free council house. She said that if we broke up at least she have a place for her and my kid :/ that was RED FLAGS. So i said. BYE and when I said BYE the outcome was not good. As a boy, being physically hurt we were taught to rub a little dirt on it and keep playing. Emotionally abuse for a man is usually worst because a man can endure, take it and not dwell on it. In a relationship most men are oblivious their being emotionally abused (gaslighted, mirrored, etc) by their spouse. In a lengthy relationship, is only realized when everything that man cherishes and loves is gone. Self-confidence has basically disappeared, isolated from friends and family staring at an empty house. However long it takes, differs each man the longer the abuse, longer a man's comeback. Everything that a man has loved, built with callus hands that's ripped away. It hurts. A man has no fear with nothing left to lose. Who that man becomes is.... Edit: Sometimes there won't be an answer. The only closure is moving on.

It made me weeping.... it's exceptional form of torture when place suppose to be safe becoming a house of horrors and abuser is playing games ( putting mask of decency after creating havoc) that's more malicious and headwrec then any other bullying ( from strangers, outside your home) when Actually little outside you have- becoming your home and all outside your family ( like this police man), for me it was finally couple of "strangers" who gave me "a break" , room in their house....

5:00 ... that face... right there. The sadistic delight is so exhilarating that it can't help but bubble up to the surface. It's made all the more pervasive by the fact that this is also more inconvenience that the narcissist has to deal with, whoever caused it is irrelevant. The creepy smile and barely contained schadenfreude are so well put across here. Eerie is not the word.

It's ironic that venezuela was mentioned in this video. When this movie came out, it inspired a lot of minds and lots of hearts for a change in that country. But ultimately, it has been the pockets... ans pockets has no hearts, no souls...

No no no, it was based on real horror story. Concern police actually probably saved the guy, cause he was keeping coming back until finally man admitted he was abused, woman was sentenced to prison, him and his boy and his family are patching life together without monster mother, this what he meant he'll have to explain to the boy why his mum is in prison, instead letting it go and she would kill him in the end and boy would grow up without father, in real story the man almost starved to death...it was unbelievable to watch...

Their acting was alright but not good enough to distract from their physical appearance; his expressions kept giving off anger but his actions were trying to force a narrative of being passive, her expressions were toxic but her body language was just kinda goofy to me

Domestic abuse comes in all forms. Her gaslighting and insidious whispers would drive anyone crazy, but, thankfully, he was able to finally share this torture with a friend and was able to leave that behind. It doesn't always come with raging anger and screams. This kind of abuse goes so deep and will always be in the back of his mind. With that said, society has come a long way since the days when men or boys would be laughed at.

I just cannot get my head around how this happens ? How anyone can let themselves get in to this situation ? Not only has the victim allowed it but also the abuser, how does someone let themselves treat another person like this ? It’s a common situation that baffles me every time.
