Hey man, thanks a ton for the comparison! I liked that you included the percentages, but you made a mistake in calculating the heat retention. You should always compare both starting and ending temperatures to the room temperature (about 73.4°F usually). So the heat retention would be: (Tendt - Troom)/(Tstart - Troom) and not Tend/Tstart. I'm not gonna bore you with the details (unless you ask for them). So for example the Stanley Classic would be (144.5-73.4)/(195.5-73.4) = 58.2%. Which is a lot worse than the 74% you calculated. This probably doesn't even change the ranking but I thought you should know! Cheers!
just grabbed a zojirushi for 17 bucks on Amazon lightning deals and while the reviews were great I wanted to know how it would really hold up against my current contigo. this video was scientific, detailed, and objective oriented. just what I was looking for in a comparison test. great upload
The real world is where it matters. My Thermos keeps liquids hot well over 12 hours in the OPEN position the entire time. It's a crazy good product. Plus, you don't have a lid flapping in your face.
THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT REVIEW I'VE EVER SEEN. I LIKED HOW YOU USED QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATDA (MEASURING TEMP OVER TIME AND FEELING THE MUGS BY HAND TO FOR A HYPOTHESIS). IT WOULD BE REALLY COOL IF YOU WERE GIVEN MORE PRODUCTS TO TEST OUT AGAINST EACH OTHER TO MAKE SIMILAR REVIEWS
Even though the Contigo got a poor heat retention rating I still prefer it. The fact is, if you drop or spill it, it will automatically seal unlike the other ones. Working around computers all day thats a big deal, we have more than one drink related incident in the workshop.
I just watched an other video that included the Contigo. The model used here has a lock button on the lid. Apparently it was left in the open/drink position the whole time which explains the hot top. I didn't know that jarring it will cause that switch to auto-shut. If used as intended (only opening when drinking) I wonder what the results would have been? All the other info by the author was very useful.
Thanks for review. In searching you tube there is one guy comparing zoji and Thermos nissan model. Saying the Nissan is a lot better on insulation. 2-3 hours longer for hot liquids. Unfortunately he doesn't give temp readings. I do own nissan models and they are definitely impressive.
I have or have had most of these mugs with the exception of the chantals. Your test reflects my experience with them. Zojirushi out performs them all by a considerable margin. I can honestly say though, that the contego is the only one to truly disappoint me. I used it once and haven't since. The lid really gets too hot. I thought the thermos king however, would have done better. You should check out the hydro flasks or even the klean kanteens, they're not bad.
Do one for cold drink storage. Anyhow, I have a thermos mug and after just a couple of times in the dishwasher the paint started to peel. A year or so later and almost all the paint is gone from the top of the mug to about the middle of the logo. A 2nd mug I bought is starting to do the same. I use mine for cold drinks because I drink them so slowly sometimes. Great video by the way.
If you like really hot coffee or want a completely leak-proof mug, Zojirushi hands down. Otherwise, the newer Chantal offers very good heat insulation with better drinkability.
+Amd Kwt I assume you mean the Thermos Travel Tumbler (the stainless steel Thermos in the test)? If so, yes, I prefer the Chantal because the Thermos is awkward to drink from. Otherwise, it is a very nice mug with very high build quality.
+Michael B i want to buy the Chantal but i think when you keep the lid opened the temp will fall down faster than the Thermos because of the big open area, what do you think?
+Amd Kwt I don't think there will be a big difference, assuming you mean the stainless steel Thermos. Pushing the button on either will open approximately the same size gap to let liquid flow. The Chantal is much easier to drink from as the coffee comes out in a predictable manner - which is helpful when something is super hot!
Who needs coffee hot 5 hours later maybee 2 hours max ,thats with an hour drive to work, get real . Besides to truely test a mug ,open lid to drink 1 time every 15 min for 2 hours then. Tell me what it is .who seals coffee up and never sips it,kinda ridiculous.
Exactly. I have 2 of the "colored" Thermos mugs. That are so good I have to put an ice cube in for a few seconds otherwise too hot to drink on my hour commute. Though I hate lids with too many parts to clean well. Ridiculous amount of parts in the newer Thermos traveler mugs . . I like the older, simple 2 piece lids . . but can't seem to find them.
