Authorities in Hong Kong have begun a review process aimed at ridding the city of tiny, squalid subdivided homes. For years the government has been criticised for failing to address the issue, which highlights the startling divide between its rich and poor. But even news plans to regulate and set standards for such housing will take years to come into effect.

The coffin ⚰️ homes have been around for years and years 😔 it's like pre- deaths.... I traveled to Hong Kong every 29 days during 2012-2013 , to "exit" from Guangzhou because of my tourist visa... I learned about the "hourly motel" people rented the rooms based on hour used. I got a special price for my room from 11pm to 8am because my boss took 3 business days to process for China. I'm glad I get to explore Hong Kong the way it was, street vendors open until midnight, police everywhere

Hongkongers are pragmatic and realistic. Outsiders might be appalled by their living conditions. But compared with the homeless living on the streets in many Western countries without shelter, what they have is a blessing.

Because HK relies on selling land for government revenue. Building too much public housing will crash the property market, and affect gov expenditures. Plus lots of old buildings where these coffin rooms are located are in older districts. Buying back all these lands, and rebuilding will take decades.

Just make buildings taller. More room for same size of land. They have to make coffin rooms because there is no enough space for everyone.

Korea did that and 60% of the apartments are still vacant. No one can afford to buy new property

You need to provide people with low income housing, not just leave them with nothing. I've also had a hard time on my disability check here in the US, and once I stayed at a house in LA that was subdivided into 23 different sleeping cubicles with common areas during COVID. No one wore masks and the cubicle I was in was super warm and stuffy with 7 other fenced in twin mattresses on bunk beds in the normal sized bedroom.

The sad thing is so many people make money of the poor in this way, some places charge per night rates which adds up to more than what a person will pay per month

If a guy is unemployed, has no pension, is dependent on government handouts, and watches the Olympics from sunup to sundown, he is fortunate to have a coffin apartment to live in, to do nothing in.
