Thank you for a well presented video. One additional difference between the two is the source of oak used in the production of the barrels and how they are produced. American bourbon must be aged in only 100% brand new American oak barrels, while French cognac presumably is made in only French oak barrels. I believe cognac producers use predominately new oak but in general winemaking practices it is very rare that wines would be aged in only new barrels. The actual toasting process in barrel making is radically different when making Whiskey barrels in an American cooperage versus how all French barrels are produced, whether for wine or spirit production. Both of these issues produce eventual aromatic and flavor differences to the two spirits that are admittedly somewhat subtle but also fun to contemplate while enjoying said beverages!!

Whisky HAS to be destilled at least twice. At the 1st destillation you make Low wine. And the age statement for whisky is not that simple. The youngest whisky added has to be the age statement, so older whisky can always be present. And older age does not mean "better quality". Further more the difference in spelling comes from Ireland. They added an "e" to distinguish their brands from the scottish.

The aging designation for Cognac is very similar to Tequila aging. There’s Blanco which is not aged at all, Reposado which is aged for 2-12 months, Añejo which is aged for 1-3 years, Extra Añejo which is aged for 3 years or more. And then theres Cristalino which is charcoal filtered after it’s been barrel rested or aged. Another similarity is that both liquors are named after a specific region of their country of origin.

Even vodka fals in the category of whiskey! (the definition of a grain spirit) I used to prefere a good single malt to a cognac 15 years ago price vice. "Unfortunately " I was,nt the only one😅

Perhaps the original comparison should have been whiskey & brandy. The note that cognac must be from Cognac but whiskey can be from anywhere is a bit apples and Granny Smith apples. Brandy and whiskey can both be made anywhere. Respectively, Cognac can only be made in Cognac and, for example, Bourbon can only be made in the USA.

I don't believe whiskey is distilled only once. Google ever lies. American regulations also have ages built-in to the words that must be printed on the label such as "straight"and "bonded".

This was to easy.. Do you realy know about Cognac and Whiskey ? I looks like you just read from wikipedia. Cognac is not typical blend of a variate of grapes, normal the grape ugni blanc is used. The area of cognac is six crus. Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Bois ordinairs.( Six crus regions: six unique products ) - ( Grapes from Grande C. need more ageing then example Borderies area. ).. VS, VSOP, XO and XXO is blends of different years. Another used is Hors d' Age. Exampel Bache Gabrielsen HdA is about 60 years old. A average age of XO is about 15-20 years. At once you put a small amount of 2 years old cognac in the same blend it is then a VS, but still old ;)... You get what you pay. You also get vintages from a special year. My favourites. .... VS is good for used in food and drinks. VSOP is typical used in drinks and some is good just drinking. XO/XXO and above is typical for drinking, as long they dont trick you with alot of young parts in the blend. Hors d'age Normalt realy old, but you can be tricked ;) Read the price.r Napoleon - Betwean VSOP and XO. Vintage - Barel from a special year that the BNIC in Cognac as sealed until bottleing. And many more.... I should also mention another terminology that’s often used-that of Fine Champagne. This is not a separate terroir, but rather a Cognac created from a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie. To qualify as Fine Champagne, at least half (50%) of the Cognac must hail from Grande Champagne. A tip: Dont by from the biggest producers as Hennessy, Martell and so on. You pay to much just for the bottle and the name. Go for the smaller quality producers: Maxime Trijol, Leyrat, Lheraud, Prunier, Jean Luc Pasquet, Tesseron, Chateau de montifaud, Delamain, Jean Fillioux ... Thank you :)
