The phenomenon of cognitive dissonance often strikes in times when we least expect. It is a topic that may cause confusion, grief, and sadness. Through a proper understanding of what it is and how it affects us all, we can make a positive change leading to a profound transformation. Assistant Professor in Public Health, Theodore K. Gideonse. Dr. Gideonse is a psychological and medical anthropologist, and he teaches in the Program in Public Health at the University of California, Irvine. He is also a film critic, and before academia he was a journalist, an editor, a literary agent, and for a brief time, a judge for Guinness World Records. In his TEDx Talk, he Dr. Gideonse will explain how cognitive dissonance happens and how it can be resolved in deeply unhealthy ways and in ways that lead to profound and positive transformation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I just had the realization that the purpose of religion is to create a "story" to fix cognitive dissonance. It makes perfect sense now.
@noefaure7661
@noefaure7661 3 года назад
That's an attempt to fix your cognitive dissonance about religion because you don't understand it, it way safer to think that it's false and only serves the purpose of giving sense to poor-minded humans desperate for help. May make sense, you're still trying to be consistent in your thoughts :)

@@noefaure7661 Yeah, for example I am trapped in religion. I'm an unbeliever and by becoming a godmother, I created a terrible cognitive dissonance for myself. Now I'm suffering bcs of my conformity and low self-esteem. Be mindful :')

In a world I inhabit, we have an alternative word to schema, with roughly the same meaning. That word is Gestalt, or, very roughly, picture (or formation or pattern). We all make pictures all the time of many aspects of our experience, in order to make some sense.
@the5thYearSeniors

sometimes cognitive dissonance can be used as a positive tool. I use it all the time to improve myself. I think this is how "positive affirmations" work. You say something like, "I am a brilliant person!". When reality doesn't match that you change your behavior to seem more brilliant. You force yourself to work harder to finish a degree or learn new things to get closer to being brilliant. The only problem is it never changes that underlying feeling that you are a fraud. You will eventually have people saying you are brilliant, but it isn't the motivator for continued improvement. You are motivated by the dissonance that continues. Maybe that was a factor in why this guy was such a good lyricist and composer. Maybe his schema was all invented by himself and he was just fighting cognitive dissonance all the time.

You can remove that fnal little bit by Completely removing the previous bleief so that you dont feel any relation to it, and then replacing it with your new belief that you want. ... It is just in identifying the correct beleif to inhibit, that alligns overall with what you want in life, thus alligning youself to it!.

There has been a lot of research done about the topic, I just learned about it minutes ago, watched two short videos and I think I can talk about it much better than he did. He spoke about their relationship with Michael, their lives and a lot of unnecessary information that has nothing to do with Cognitive Dissonance.

Hypocrisy is winning. Do as I say, not as I do or even say... I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, as long as it benefits me at some level even if it contradicts something... the point is... I need to win and get what I want.

@@sophiachick3901 why? 2 opposing thoughts we think or want to think about is just searching and applying meaning to what we are thinking Using words like dissonance is a generic term trying to say that there is a problem with it you know I'm right.
@WelsyCZ
@WelsyCZ 2 года назад
You don't need the term, but you need to know this exists and how to behave when this happens to you. You need to know that you need to take a second, gather all the facts and reorganize your thoughts based on the facts. So that you can prevent scnarios like Michael's. And to achieve this, terms help. We name things because we need to reference them. This clearly needs to be referenced in this way, to teach people how to handle the situation when their beliefs hit a wall of the harsh reality.
