Darren classes himself as a polymath and an adaptationist. Self confessed to be average to poor all through his academic life, Darren failed college twice. Until finally he figured out what was holding him back mentally. He was spending most of his time playing video games and completely overloading his working memory and damaging his ability to learn effectively. After he made this realization he took his learning into his own hands and went back and finished college and subsequently became an author and speaker. He is now a coach for businesses and individuals showing them how to empower and improve themselves with strategies and techniques that will help them reach success in this over competitive world. You can follow him on Twitter @Darrenmacnelis.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Working memory overload Why cant I remember my precious memory? Surfing web here and there, playing video games for 8 hours, facebooking and on the phone all the time make information overload ---> working memory overload Working memory is responsible for: 1. Intake information 2. Will power - focus 3. Treating in your life 4. Taking new information and linking with the information you already know 5. Behavior response based on information 6. How to use information in your life How to reduce it? ---> Digital information diet 1. Eliminate your facebook, handphone and webpages 2. Read real book - 4 months 3. Find quiet time for self-reflection. Find quiet time --> to become more clarity in thought, talk without run some tangent ---> Nabi Muhammad SAW did this too - Gua Hira' time Time is the comodity - technology will take it if you dont control it.

This happened to me 6 years back, I realized what was happening to me, I am still doing the same thing. It's more deeper than just realizing that quiet time is important. Its a way of escaping the real world.

Until people understand this and take action to alleviate whatever pain is causing them to feel the need to escape the real world in to the digital world, people can't be helped.
@bluepacman13
@bluepacman13 5 лет назад
Well actually it's escaping the fake world, the real world is out in the jungle; nature and sky. What's fake is the mental construction of consumerism, money, and social media. All formed in the mind, can't touch it, taste it, feel it. But in nature, you begin to live, and you feel you belong.

It is. I noticed I'm doing it as well. Doing it for at least three years already. I distract myself on the PC the whole damn day when I got time. Even when I don't got time. Hence my thesis not going anywhere >.> It feels like an addiction at this point. But I got a revelation this week. I'm following a mindfulness course and I do a lot more silent time on purpose and I find out why I always distract myself. Apparently I am always sad. Literally every time I check in on myself, I am sad. No matter when, where, with who, what I'm doing, I'm sad. I feel a huge urge to distract myself when I feel sad. It sucks, but now I at least know more and can go further with this and figure out why I'm sad and learn how to deal better with the sadness. Maybe following a MBSR (mindfulness based stress reduction) course can help you or someone else as well? Or just doing the silent time by yourself. It's difficult and might be painful, but it can reveal a lot.

It was an interesting talk, but I feel like the last part was a bit rushed … How can one rewire their brain ? What are examples of quiet time or how can we better reconnect with our deeper self ? That being said I completely relate to the memories part. I feel like I have spent years and years on the Internet, I almost remember some Vines or RU-vid poop videos better than poetry or something my friend said or did. It's scaring me. And I need to change that habit

We are adding to our cognitive load with easy and addictive access to information on our phone. A lot of which is unnecessary to our daily lives. Everyone has limited working memory. If you have a choice between adding to your cognitive load and reducing your cognitive load, then be grateful you don't have ADHD. ADHDers don't have control over what adds to their cognitive load leading to overwhelm, paralysis etc and their working memory is far more limited than neurotyoical brains.

Like any other addiction, to recover you have to withdraw from the "drug." In this case, the drug is the click bait, the alert, the social media post that we've been programmed to respond to. If you don't think you're addicted, try an experiment: Don't look at or touch your phone/computer for 30 minutes. Do you feel anxious?

You are looking for excuses. He clearly said to limit your technology intake. Uninstall some apps, maybe check them once a day in a browser. Start reading a book, stick to it. Have some time alone everyday. Take the information from it video, apply it in your life and stop expecting everyone to hand you everything on a silver plate! We gotta do some work ourselves too :) our lives are so very different.

We are not machines. Men created the internet without the aid of an all out computerized scientific R&D laboratory and technical shop, all they use are slide rules and typewriters and architects-draftsmans table and blue print making tools and manual instruments and calculating abacus also known as SOROBAN MATHEMATICS IN JAPAN.

I like the information, but have to make a correction, Jesus doesn't have a creator. He's God, he wasn't created, and he's from everlasting. 1 John 5:20 "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life."
