Textile Collection Manager, Marie Shlag provides viewers a guided tour of
"The Gilded Age" period clothing at the Cohasset Historical Society.
Mark Twain’s moniker for the years 1870-1900, “The Gilded Age,” is typified by excess. The upper classes of society gained significant wealth, and rapidly changing cultural norms were beginning, bringing about drastic changes in clothing styles.
The exhibit will feature period clothing such as gowns, outerwear, accessories, and more from Cohasset Historical Society’s Costume and Textile Collection, showcasing elaborate construction, lavish fabrics, color, and trimmings.

I adore the moment when Cathy McGowan is setting down the sleeve after showing the lace on the green dress and as she sets down the sleeve she gives it a little pat. You can see how much these lovely dresses are cared for. Lovely exhibition!

The outfits are amazing. They really show the skills of tailoring and beadwork used for the lovely ladies. The hats shoes bags gloves and jewellery were used for the complete day or evenings outfits. Wow ,wow.

Heartfelt thanks and enjoyment for your time and willingness to share these wonderfully beautiful dresses, capes and coats from your collection. So many more people today are interested in the construction of historical gowns and more, partially maybe because of the ever-increasing popularity of recreating historical outfits to actually wear for special occasions and just for fun as sewists. I, for one, would love to watch each of the items off the hanger and have some of the hidden seams and inner construction revealed. Might even be profitable to offer Historically accurate patterns in a shop for some of your gowns, capes, hats, handbags, etc. Just beautiful!

Thank you, truly ladies for this extremely enriching view of your collection! ❤ Each piece looks lovingly looked after and well presented. I'm so glad for utube in that those of us who love fashion and costume, design, fashion history, architecture ( loved the sound of your creaking floors 😊even) get this chance to see these extant garments! ❤ Even hearing the sound of their rustle says so much. Wished I lived closer. Will be spreading the word and googling how far you are for future reference 😉💗🇨🇦

I fell in love with fashion history at age 11 when my parents got a set of encyclopedias and I discovered the multi page section on clothing history which I would pour over for hours on end. I was hooked. Whenever I can visit museums with historical clothing on display I visit them. These dresses and outerwear were exquisite! Strangely enough, the capes and the other outer garments were among my favorites, especially the ones that have embroidery down the front and on the sleeves. There were a couple that I would like to have modern versions of them made for me. Many thanks for a marvelous and instructive video.

Isn't it amazing by just the way a garment is made can make your body shape change! Nowadays I have to Tailor everything and I'm only 30 years old none of my friends will even touch a sewing machine. It seems that people dont know how to do theese things anymore maybe we have been distracted from our touch. Where are the good designers?

We have an antique dresser that has been in our family. It has a hat box cabinet on the side. I will never get rid of it. Compared to today's furniture, it has only four drawers. That tells you the difference in craftsmanship and labor to produce garments.

I bet they told them that they are recording - but people are people... Most of them are zero disciplined... More distracting is that the camera man film the skirts when she talk abaut the bodieces
@dawnkindnesscountsmost5991
@dawnkindnesscountsmost5991 Год назад
@@katarinatibai8396I would have at least liked to see slow-motion footage of each gown with the camera focused on the bodice first, all the way around, then the skirt all the way around, perhaps done outside of business hours, with the stanchions removed, protective cloth put down, and shoes removed or covered, for walking around each gown 2 or 3 times while filming, then slowed down in editing; and filmed separately from the spoken information, then edited together. I hit pause a few times, but wasn't quite the same. I realize that funding doesn't always allow for ideal filming. Editing to add that at least when Ms. McGowan was showing features of the gowns as Ms. Shlag was speaking, the camera operator mainly focused on what Ms. McGowan was showing.

Well, it's really nice. In Cohasset? Permanently? And it is okay to make comments, touch the garments and show some enthusiasm about what you are examining. I know you love clothes, that is clear. Next time, include someone who sews clothes. That is a very different eye view than someone who sews only quilts, which is surely the text produced by a person from whom you were reading. The sewing descriptions were almost entirely opaque and showed no understanding of the garments. Which were very pretty but did not make me feel they were displayed correctly. Cohasset? Like, as in up the street?
