Coil’s albums have had spotty availability on streaming services for a long time, and all their first three main studio LP’s are currently not on Spotify. All are incredible albums, and this one is the most fun, the one in which their trademark darkness is most alloyed with lightness and even humor. Underground noise meets trendy dance rhythms, futuristic sound design mixes with themes of ancient alchemy, and chaotic drug trip simulations are held inside songs that mostly feel tight and coherent. In other words Coil, like very few groups, truly made music that recognized no boundaries. As the music from their time (late 80’s to early 2000’s) gets seen more and more from a historical perspective I think the work of John Balance and Peter Christopherson will increasingly stand out from that of their peers: this is music at once of that moment (its material being mainly the era’s synths, samplers, and drum machines) and yet transcendent in its effect. Another artist that shows the same contradictory impulses both to set and break boundaries-even if the music is made on a smaller scale and under more sober conditions-is Craggs-Farallon (ru-vid.com/show-UCnHfzXZVuU769al_ccIcjRwvideos).

My friends were always into Coil since Scatology and Horse Rotorvator, when suddenly this arrived and Coil was the bridge between experimental and dance. Not anyone was disappointed and at that time people around us started doing LSD. I was one of them and the album became this adventure for everyone involved. Mysterious, Strange, but still Coil... Even made a strange artwork about a vision I had on the final track. Chaostrophy made my neighbour once crazy. What's going on in your place?

Dark River has such an intense Autechre vibe, for the longest time I actually thought that was early Autechre. The total free range in the melody that is framed by the growling but unimposing yet uber dark bassline, the heaps of negative space, the absence of clutter... Like a crushing mental image that comes rolling towards you inevitably, menacing yet not entirely unfriendly.

It's a bit frustrating to know that most people that listen to this are listening on cheap, crappy speakers or headphones. This album BEGS for - almost *requires* - a high-end system with a balanced subwoofer. There is so much going on in the low-end and even high frequencies. (Although, many of us folks have hoped for a remastered version for many years). Play it loud and with a sub, and center yourself. I promise, it's pure magic. Don't be alarmed -- It will not harm you. It's only lightning... teenage lightning.

I couldn't get into most Coil albums for the longest time but something clicked the other day. Going through the first part of their discography these last few days and I've noticed they seem to work under no limitations. Absolutely nothing is off the table for them. It's a little daunting listening to them because their discography is so huge and varying stylistically. I originally started listening to them because I was interested in dark ambient and drone (Time Machines, How to Destroy Angels etc). If any long time fans can give me Coil recommendations for albums that lean in that direction it would be greatly appreciated.

And on another listen: around 49:30 they start throwing those whooshing noises totally outside of where the speakers are. How do they do that?
@artemlyubchenko3022
@artemlyubchenko3022 Год назад
Probably phase manipulation, you can get a "panning outside of speakers" effect by inverting the phase of the sound on one of the speakers.

I would like to buy Coil's CDs, but the prices are totally exaggerated. From 50 euros to 80 euros on Discogs and Ebay. They're crazy. And the band doesn't get anything out of it. Does anyone know where to buy their music at a reasonable price?

Just got this on CD for 25 bucks at a local record store here in Santiago, Chile. Guess you just gotta look for specialized weird ass music shops and pray for the best. Good luck!

@@joseharo8495there's basically no music stores In my city, let alone "weird ass" ones Only thing I was able to find that I could even think of listening to was some Metallica and areosmith CDs and vinyls, but everything else is literally trash (literally, it's all disco polo)

I had this record, but I think I remember its sounding differently than this; is there another rendition of this entire album?

jungastein On their release CD,Vinyl and cassette tape were totally different mixes/versions of „Love Secret ´ s Domain“...You have to collect all versions,.Coils record release politics were truly unusual!But they still remain my most favourite band.

Stolen and Contaminated Songs was released shortly after this one, and had unused material from many of the same sessions, so maybe you heard similarities and confused the two?

Ну не люблю я этот альбом этих ребят, и все тут. Скатология, Роторватор просто прекраснейшие альбомы, но LSD вообще никак не нравится.
