very nice. 1. coils move = energy loss. use glue. 2. put 2-5ohm resistors and diodes on the coils, it will reduce the "suck back" of the coils.

What is interesting from physics point of view is the recoil. You are accelerating the ball - the ball is being pushed, but then the gun is also pushed in the opposite direction. So there is a push from the ball into the opposite direction. Your gun is heavier and you have the friction of the table ... so in the end it is the ball that accelerates, not the opposite. It will be interesting to see your set-up on a skateboard with a front plate connected to it. Try shooting the plate that is connected to the skateboard and the gun and see how much the entire thing (gun with attached skateboard) will advance.
@mrkiky
@mrkiky 2 года назад
Well the gun is still much heavier than the bullet, and the total energy of the bullet is pretty small, so I imagine it will only move a little bit.
@sokauo

Nice i've always wanted to build one. The upgrade you can make is moving the coils as close as it can to each others and glueing them. Also cut the the rest of the barel, only the coil produce an acceleration all the rest in friction.

awesome video! one question: the coils move back when you accelerate the projectile because they are lose. Because they are probably a lot heavier than the the projectile, it seems like a huge loss of energy... Have you tested it with the coils tightened?

Great video. I had plans on building one of these but it has always fallen on the powersupply side. (mine was using 8x 80V 10000uF caps charged to around 550v- 600v) If you are going to make improvements on this design, I would suggest making the coils from thicker wire (if you have the space for it), securing them better on the body (the barrel) if I ever revisit my own project I will checkout the optical detection, becaus I had planed it just to relay on constant time to launch the second state.

@KakushinAU

No reason other than making it easier to visualize. The coils could be moved close together. The optical triggers need a little bit of space ahead of the coil because suck-back isn’t controlled in this version. Using IGBT’s instead of SCR’s would fix that.

Hello, I'm making one of these in my home and I have an Arduino uno. This project might work with this Arduino?
@KakushinAU
@KakushinAU 3 года назад
Yes, I believe it would still work with an Uno with a few limitations: 1) There are only 2 external interrupt pins on the Uno, so you'd have to give up either the speedometer or 2 of the coil stages. 2) The Uno runs at 16Mhz instead of 240Mhz so the timing and accuracy of the interrupt pins would suffer. Alternatively ESP32's are only about $5 USD on aliexpress (www.aliexpress.com/item/4000296658456.html). Good luck.

As you are using a sensor to fire, can't you just use a MOSFET to turn it on, then turn it off at a few uSec later? Lots of testing will be needed to get optimum timing. Then you can start to predict how long to turn on by the speed of the ball. Naturally, it would be best if you had a 10 stage or so, but with less power as the experiment is to learn, not blow a hole in the box.
@KakushinAU

I love this and I will be making one! I have some questions though. 1. On the schematic, what is the purpose of the 9V between the isolator and the thyristor? (Can I just use a 12v to 9v converted for this so it runs on 1 battery) 2. Is the wire going from the isolator through the indicator led and into the thyristor necessary? If it is, is the led necessary? (I'm not sure how it all works lol) Thank you!
@KakushinAU
@KakushinAU 3 года назад
Thanks for the questions. I'll try to answer them below: 1. The 9V battery was needed to drive a small amount of current through the gate of each SCR to trigger it. Unfortunately you can't use a common battery or power supply for all of the stages because sometimes there is a huge voltage difference between them which would blow up the power supply. For example, the cathode of the stage 1 SCR will be briefly at 300 volts while coil 1 is being fired. Meanwhile, the cathode of the stage 2 SCR will be at 0 volts because it is not being fired yet. There might be a more elegant solution to use the voltage stored in the capacitors to do this, but the batteries made it more simple and easy to understand for the purposes of this experiment. 2. Yes, the wiring between the optical isolator and thyristor are necessary as it forms the trigger circuit. The indicator LED is not necessary but is a nice visual indication that the coil was actually triggered (the 120ohm resistor could be connected directly to the cathode of the SCR). For ease of understanding, you could imagine the trigger circuit all by itself: 1) 9V battery supplies the voltage, 2) the optical isolator is like a switch, 3) the resistor limits the current, and 4) the SCR Gate/Cathode is the device to be energized.

Hi. Nice experiment! When the projectile first reaches the end of the first coil, do you disable it? So which sensor detects this? You need to detect it the fist time, so that the projectile is not "sucked back", right? Then the same for the other two coils, right?
@KakushinAU
@KakushinAU 3 года назад
Thanks. Right. Disabling the coils upon the projectile reaching the center of the coil would minimise the "suck-back" effect. This experiment didn't do that because it uses SCR thyristors which are latching and difficult to turn off. I think using an optical sensor after each coil wouldn't be very beneficial, because the suck-back would have already occurred between the center of the coil and the sensor. To optimise for suck-back, I would probably replace all 3 SCR's with IGBT's and then turn off each coil after a certain number of microseconds. The microseconds could possibly even be calculated on the fly by the Arduino based on the projectile's speed during the previous stage.
@ButilkaRomm
@ButilkaRomm 3 года назад
@@KakushinAU Or MOSFET instead of IGB? If you use a long projectile instead of ball then the projectile could trigger the sensor when the projectile is in the middle of the coil.
@KakushinAU
@KakushinAU 3 года назад
Good point. MOSFET is also a good option. Didn't realize they made them that big, but after a quick search 50amp 600volt MOSFETs seem to be readily available. Thanks.
@nullbeyondo
@nullbeyondo 3 года назад
@@KakushinAU Not Quite. It only sucks back if the center of mass of the projectile passes the center of the coil assuming the coil's windings are uniform. So if the coil is smaller than the projectile and the sensor is at its end, the porjectile would never be "sucked back" at all; thus you're only right if the coil is bigger than the projectile.
@nullbeyondo
@nullbeyondo 3 года назад
@@KakushinAU It is worth noting that it is not nesscarilly a bad thing at all for the coil to be small, In fact, assuming the number of turns stays the same, then it actually concetrates the magnetic field even stronger. But it gets even more complex cause that small gain in magnetic field and that huge decrease in length might not give the projectile enough time to accelerate although the force is stronger since the length is smaller... it basically turns off way faster than before not giving it enough time to gain higher velocities.. you see what I mean?
@momowangle4781
@momowangle4781 3 года назад
Time between detection of projectile and firing is 6microseconds. Compared with Arduino Nano, it's 15 times faster. What is faster? The detection-to-firing time is faster than Nano's reaction time? (So a nano won't work?) The ESP32 is 15 times faster than Nano? (Socan I use a Nano instead of buying an ESP32?)
@KakushinAU
@KakushinAU 3 года назад
Thanks for the question. An Arduino Nano can run up to 16Mhz, but the ESP32 in this example was running at its maxiumum of 240Mhz. Therefore it is looping through the code 15 times faster. A Nano would also work, but the reaction time would be a bit slower at 16Mhz. Also the code would need to be modified a bit because the Nano only has 2 interrupt input pins, unlike the 4 interrupt pins used in this example. (Interrupt pins are more accurate in high speed applications because they immediately react to the input being triggered, rather than waiting for the code to loop through and read the pin value.)
