We finally finish the Rock Krawler long arm and 3 link install on our Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon! And while we are at it, we take a moment to explain why coilovers are not always the right choice or the better choice, and what that means for the Stepchild build!

I completely agree with the assessment of coilovers. When I built my JKUR everyone expected me to go coilovers because I went longarm directly from stock and my off-road background but coilovers are not the end all be all as they still have drawbacks and my Jeep is my daily driver/weekend wheeler. A lot of misconceptions out there as well as the whole LCG trend. Mike

MoneyPit Jku yes, even with only 2.5”-3” of lift I would still recommend adjustable control arms to keep the axles centered in the openings as well as maintain adjustability to keep pinion angle and caster properly set. This will maintain the street manners especially since your building a driver rather than a trailer queen. Hope that helps. Mike

MoneyPit Jku I’m sure there are a lot good ones out there but the only ones I can vouch for personally that I have used are Teraflex and Metalcloak. Both are high quality but I have been really impressed with Metalcloak’s Duroflex bushings. I built my own links several years ago using OEM TJ bushings at the axle and Currie Johnny Joints at the frame but knowing what I know now after my experience with Metalcloak I think I would be running their Duroflex bushings. So what kind of shock do you recommend for daily drive coilover or normal shocks

It's funny seeing it bouncing like that because it has no shocks. I wanted to replace my trucks shocks with some much better offroad shocks, so I called my local 4x4 parts store and they had a set of the ones I wanted, so I went outside and took my shocks off and then called my other half to get her to pick the new set up on her way home, to find out that she had 3 more real estate showings so she wouldn't be home for at least 3more hours, and I needed my truck because I was going to have people waiting on me at the trailhead in one hour, so I said I'll just drive it to town without shocks on it, and the roads were nice and smooth so I didn't think anything was even much different, so I was running 60mph when I hit a spot where they had removed old RXR tracks, and they were at an angle so it wasn't even a straight-on hit, and I about wrecked my truck when I hit it! lol. My truck was bouncing really bad, and it was bouncing like corner to corner, I felt like I was riding an angry out of control bull. lol. I got it slowed down and drove very slow from there on, and I put the shocks on my truck in the parking lot of the store because they were closing as I was paying for the shocks, so I couldn't have them install them on their lift. lol. Never drive fast when you have no shocks on your vehicle. lol.

I've been planning on putting an RK lift on my Jeep next spring. I'm interested in seeing how the RK triple rate springs perform not only off-road but also on- road. The Stepchild is an awesome build it's only missing one thing "Atlas"
@Fix_It_Again_Tony
@Fix_It_Again_Tony 4 года назад
What is important to supporting the sprung mass is the wheel rate. If the wheel rate is low, adding x pounds will compress the suspension more than if the wheel rate was high. The springs you have now appear to be dual rate. The area with the coils close together is the lower rate and the area with the coils farther apart is the high rate. Why couldn't you design a spring configuration for coil overs that would have the same wheel rate? It shouldn't matter what position the springs are in. You would at least need a double, maybe triple, spring setup, but the wheel rate at ride height should be the same. That said, you've made lots of changes here and if you liked your springs before there is no real reason to use coil overs instead of just using the existing spring with a smooth body shock like you have. Test it out and go from there. I am a bit confused on why there wasn't more test fitting before final welding if you wanted to use the six packs. Maybe time? If you decide coil overs are something you want, ask around about suspension frequency. If the guys you are talking with can't talk intelligently about suspension frequency, you probably shouldn't deal with them. You want something that will perform well on and off road. Have you read Billavista's coil over bible? www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/coilovers/Part_1/ If consistent ride height with different payloads is a top priority, maybe airbags would be a good choice in the rear. I can't wait to see this thing offroad! Looking forward to future trail videos.

Thanks for the clear explanation on coilovers vs springs - Articulating minds want to know! Kudos to all the people helping on StepChild; so many things to get right but it only takes one thing wrong to mess everything up - like tooshortshocks and that oil filter location. You should have installed the MetalCloak 5.5 long arm lock n load or 4 link lift and you could have reused the 6 pack shocks! I'm surprised you went with the Rock Krawler lift and as a result, it took alot of extra time and labor to modify your rig!

@Rob50lx
@Rob50lx 4 года назад
Shock mounts shouldn't have been welded on until the suspension was cycled. You could have easily increased the ground clearance by raising the rear lower shock mounts to accommodate the 6pak shocks. This seems like an excuse to swap out MC suspension for RK suspension. Both companies are great but I feel this is just becoming a commercial. The longer bodied shocks you installed actually have less travel and a longer compressed length than the 6paks.
@RyanRKJ
@RyanRKJ 4 года назад
Rob50lx I was also wondering why they welded on the brackets before a mock up. It made no sense, but apparently time was a factor, and the project got rushed along. Bleepin Jeep did a really good video recently about how his Comanche has a lot of problems because the build was rushed. The Scorpion Crawler is much more sorted, because he took the time to do it right.

When you get this upgrade all finished, you guys need to go back to that last "trail" you drove on the "Road to SEMA", the boulder chute thing, and see how the Stepchild holds up. To me, that would be the Gold Standard as it's not really a trail that can be driven, it's a pile of boulders, that did a LOT of damage to all the participants' vehicles in that event. It seemed to be designed to do the most damage right before they got to Las Vegas, where they could place their vehicles in the sponsors' booths and brag about how well they held up (or did not). As SEMA is a show that is not open to the general public, to have your after-market products run through that boulder chute and come out unscathed would be a real boon to sales.

I ripped off the upper control arm mount on my front axle from too much flexing on the stock bushings so I went ahead and put a truss on with an integrated upper control arm mount. I went ahead and got some currie Johnny Joints to relieve some stress and get some more flex! Through all of this I realized that I like a true 4 link, but I can't figure out why. I just don't like the idea of a 3 link in the front. Since you guys kept your 4 link up front, maybe you can tell me why you wanted to keep it and not go to a 3 link in the front as well....?

Very disappointed in your handling of the shock and wheel travel issues. The 6Pak shocks have 15" of travel. The shocks you put on don't. To get 15 on a JL you would have needed the equivalent of a bed cage. All RK had to do is fabricated and weld in little brackets to the upper shock mount to lower the mounting point 3"-4", or raise the lower mounting point, or both. They could have done in an hour or two. And you would have had more travel. The 6Pak length issue should have been obvious before the car was in the shop. I asked about in a post after I saw the first video in the RK install series. Moving the oil filter should have been a no brainer. Moving the A/C compressor, a bit more. But it is the middle of winter, the AC could have been disconnected and moved out of the way until a new bracket could have been built. That would have kept the CG down and left the long arm at a better point in its geometry. The other option would have been to cut off the upper arm bracket (there is only one) and weld it on an inch or so further away from the object. Total misunderstanding of coil-overs. The big thing the coil-overs do is keep the spring straight. The OE style spring has to go in an ark. Dual rate coil-overs also allow you to change the point the rates change where the wound dual/triple rate springs it is baked in...when the tight coils coil bind. On a coil over the dual rates can be adjusted by swapping one or both of the individual single-rate springs. There are no advantages to big springs and you won't see big springs on any serious race vehicle from Indy to Monaco to Baja or Paris-Dakar. If anything, the big reason for Lite Brite to say with big springs was to use the 6Pak shocks! The 6Pak, which is basically two shocks put together, is a very clever design, on a par with the Ohlins TTR/TTX/ILX.
@LiteBrite
@LiteBrite 4 года назад
You make it sound so easy to just move the oil filter and relocate an entire AC system. First off There is no other room for the compressor to go anywhere else plus having to make all new lines and the bracket on the axle didn’t have to just Move an inch one way or another for clearance. You are down playing they amount of work that would have to go into all of it by a huge amount. Race trucks/cars etc don’t pile 400-600 lbs of equipment in the back of a vehicle and add a trailer to them which is even more weight to tow around the country so comparing their setup and what they do to what we and other do when loading down their JEEP and towing boats and sxs isn’t nearly the same. Anything can be done with enough time and resources but to do days worth of work over shocks isn’t the answer at all. The 6 paks are a great shock but they also won’t keep up with a 2.5-3” shock with remote resi and bypasses. I had already overheated and shock faded my 6 paks in the dunes at sand hollow in 15 minutes running through there. That’s something that won’t happen with our new setup.

First, the Rock Krawler X-Factor 3-link front/rear long-arm suspension should be a major improvement on-road and offroad, so congratulations with your new suspension. Raising the CG is sometimes necessary for clearance. However, doing it for an oil filter or A/C bracket seems wrong, especially for a build that costs more than the underlying car. The A/C could have been disconnected and moved out of the way. New brackets made latter...after all, it is the middle of winter. The professionally installed 3-link long arm, Dynatrac ProRock 80s, Hemi conversion, beadlocks with 40" tires is a $60+k setup. A full-set of coll-overs/bypass shocks could easily be another $10+k. The cost of the bracket is trivial by comparison. In the beginning, you said you were keeping the 6Pak. If they were already fading why weren't they already on the chopping block. I can't imagine they faded in rock crawling. Rock Krawler specifies emulsion shocks for many of their builds, a shock that is predicated on their not being a lot of heat generated. Did MetalCloak have suggestions to handle the fading? The Wrangler is never going to be a Trophy Truck. An attempt would need much longer lower arms, probably the moving gas tank and with a triangulated rear suspension plus a bed cage and very long travel shocks. In any event, it doesn't look like the shock situation is optimized.

Your coilover argument is a bit weird. Running a separate spring versus a coilover is really no different loaded and unloaded if you chang nothing. Without adjustment they’ll both be wrong for one, loaded or unloaded. A coilover spring preload can be adjusted to better accommodate loading and unloading the Jeep than a standard coil spring. The coilover has far better adjustability and tune-ability compared to a standard lift spring. You can spring in the middle ground of what would allow more preload when loaded and then adjust when unloaded as needed or wanted. The coil spring in most cases is designed to meet the wide majority of needs which means it isn’t outstanding at anything. Can you build a good coil and shock machine? Absolutely. Budget allowing, coilovers can benefit everyone but may not be necessary. I don’t see loading and unloading a Jeep as a reason not to get coilovers honestly. It’s your preference and shouldn’t be spread as fact about coilovers.

Jay P Coilovers are very sensitive to weight where as the triple rate springs we’re using paired with properly valved shocks can handle a lot wider range of weight without adjustments. Coilovers are definitely known to be extremely sensitive to weight changes. We tow with this as well. Coilovers are known to not be a great system for towing applications which is due to the weight. We’re not spreading any false information.

Kevin Williams Can you please explain exactly how a coilover is somehow more sensitive to weight? If you used a coilover that was valved exactly the same and had the exact same spring rate as the current setup on that Jeep, it would not somehow be more sensitive to weight. Spring rate is the amount of weight it takes to lower the spring one inch. So if the spring rates are identical, the vehicle will not just magically drop lower just because it’s a coilover.

Kevin Williams Not to mention coilovers can have dual or triple rate setups that are far more adjustable than the triple rate coils you have.

Looks Great !! Very nice build. Stepchild will be even more of a Beast off-road. Do you have any idea of how much money it would cost to build a Jeep set up the way you have the Stepchild? I'm talking Jeep , motor ,axles, etc I'm guessing $100,000 +. If ya don't want to say anything that's okay. Best of luck in 2020 !!! Happy New Year 🎉🎉

The suspension looks amazing! Everything came together, at least what we are seeing. I'm sure there were all kinds of challenges. The amount of "beef" in these parts, oh my. You need the Hemi more than ever now to push all that down the road! LOL. Can't wait to see it off road now. Stay warm!

Coilovers offer the best off road performance especially going fast on and off road. that being said I agree with you as far as the back goes you would have to get a custom-built coilover for your setup in fact probably front-wise too off the shelf coilovers at this point with everything you have probably wouldn't work but I have coil overs on mine I don't have a hemi or nothing like that and let me tell you something there's no body roll on the street and I get all kinds of crazy travel and you get true travel to where when you're when your wheel goes down and it actually pushes against the ground to give you grip so that's another good thing about coilovers and the adjustability. the negatives on coilovers the adjustability you can go crazy for long time with coilovers adjusting ride height and also the maintenance at least every 20,000 miles you got to take them off and have them you know the oil changed and maintained but other than that to me they're the ultimate in performance.
@advapp
@advapp 4 года назад
furthermore I would add that changing ride height by taking the tire and wait out it isn't an issue I know lots of people who have lots more weight than you in there and they have no issues with the coil over so I don't really believe that that is an issue as far as weight goes. I don't know who told you all about that waiting stuff but that's not an issue I know lots of people who have heavy jeeps and run coilovers with no issues whatsoever you just have to go to a different spring rate.
