Great video! I went out and spent way too much money on a punch set for quarters, half dollars and dollars. However, I get people I know handing me foreign coins all the time wanting rings made. Ordered the one off Amazon today. Your Etsy store looks great! I love the way you finish off the fat end on your state quarter rings. Great craftsmanship.

I very recently started playing with coin ring making and getting the hole in the exact center has been a challenge, and I quickly found out how important it is. Last night I made a discovery that is also very simple and I expect will help a me lot. Another hobby I have is winemaking, and from that hobby I have various size rubber cone shaped grommets, with about a 3/8" hole in the exact center. What I found is, one end or the other of each of the 4 sizes grommets is an exact, (or almost exact) fit for each of the coins I'll be using to make rings with. (4 grommets, each with 2 different sized ends = 8 options) I select the grommet that is the same size as the coin, and insert a sharpie into the center hole, with the tip just barely sticking through the end that fits the coin. I hold the coin against the grommet with my left hand (my thumb and 2 fingers keeps the coin easily centered against the grommet) and apply just enough pressure to the sharpie with my right hand, giving the coin and grommet a couple turns, marking the exact center. This might sound a little awkward, but it is really very quick and easy. I've done it with various coins now and the mark from the sharpie appears to be in the exact center every time. Just another option others may want to consider.

If you use blue tape, as in painting tape, over the coin, it makes it easier to mark. Especially if the coin has any finger or other oil on it. When you get to the annealing stage, the tape will go away, just burn it off. I find it easier to anneal the total coin first. Then the blue tape, mark the center, punch it and it will make the punching easier and more accurate.

Just a thought here but couldn't you find the centre of a coin by simply laying the coin on a bit of paper drawing round it cutting that bit of paper out then folding the paper in half twice, then simply put that bit of paper on to the coin which will give you centre, then take a protractor and draw the middle hole on the paper. Or place that bit of paper on a piece of card and do the hole thing on the card, then simply draw your hole directly to the coin using the card as your template. It's just a thought to make it easier so you can make up many templates that could be reused.

Hi there fencekid. Love your videos seen them all and i'm making some very nice rings because of them. but i have decided to comment on this one because of all that free info that your giving.....well i just needed to give something back. :-) So you know how you ask us to use a fine tip??? I guess that's so it'll come off easier?? Well my friend i have one better. After messing up a few coins because my digital caliper was crap. I came up with an idea.......if you put a piece of clear scotch tape on the coin you can use the ticker tip (i like that because i can see it better) then after you make the hole you can remove the tape and the marks from the marker too and if your off by a few mm you can add another piece of tape and go one size bigger on the punch to try to salvage the coin. you ROCK man and thanks for all your videos

Hello fencekid, Help!!! I've done everything like your video says about finding dead center but it never comes out right! Maybe two out of ten. I've bought everthing like you use and I really enjoy making these rings but finding center is killing me. I don't know what else to do. The circle looks dead center but when I knock the hole, its off just a little. Most people don't notice but I do!!!! I'm real careful when I put punch in and I hit it solid. I even went and bought an anvil and mounted it on a car wheel. Real sturdy. Love your vids.

fencekid, thanks for all the awesome DIY coin ring tutorials~ i've a question that is sort of related to the centering of a coin ring. I found a early 1900 Chinese coin with a dragon design that i wanted to use for the outside of the band. i was wondering if i punch a small hole in an effort to save the rest of the dragon design, can i use a step drill and pvc pipe method if i'd be able to save the dragon design? not sure if i explained it for you to understand what i'm trying to do... anyway, let me know your thoughts. thanks!

Helpful tip to save some math. Measure the punch with the caliper. While still in place, zero the caliper. Then measure the coin and wallah the difference will appear on the caliper. ( Once you half that number, don't forget to re-zero the caliper before marking the coin.)
@ardvarkkkkk1
@ardvarkkkkk1 9 лет назад
You could screw around doing this or go to any woodworking store that sells turning supplies and buy yourself a center finder. Costs about 5 bucks. Just lay it on the coin and draw center lines. No math, no adjusting.

Hey fence kid I'm getting pretty good at regular coins like quarter, pennies, and half dollar using 7/16 punch. I'm having a problem with Kennedy dollars. They get too big and not even in complete ring form yet. More like a flower. any advice?
@fencekid
@fencekid 9 лет назад
I'm gonna shoot from the hip with you on this one. I've never made a ring out of anything larger than a half dollar. Reason being that I know what a half dollar will produce, and I just don't see the need for a thicker ring band than that. But that's just my humble opinion. Unless I was shooting for like a size 15 that still wanted a thick ass band, maybe. I'll have to give it a go some day to just check it. Try annealing every size you climb, and use a block of wood to tap your ring against to get that thing folded over asap. I don't mean, in a hurry, but more get it folded over before your desired ring size. One thing I can tell you, is if you keep at it, you will achieve your goal. Rock on Man

This is Don again. I noticed since my last post, that when I get center using a digital caliper, I placed punch on to cicle drawed on coin, and circle is larger than punch! Could I have a bad caliper? I zero everytime I measure coin, punch, and circle diameter.
@fencekid
@fencekid 9 лет назад
Don Cromer The inside edge of the drawn line is the edge of the punch. I'll bet that your caliper marks are accurate, but when you place the punch down on the coin, the coin moves just a little. Try this. Fold up a piece of paper a few times and place it in the under the coin in the punch and die. You should be able to turn it sideways and the coin won't fall out. Then adjust coin to center. The idea is to keep the coin from moving when you place the punch on the coin. Or, use a sheet of leather. This also allows you to pull either side of the overlapping leather side to side, and drag the coin into place. and once there it should stay there firmly. Drop in your punch and punch it. let me know how it goes, yeah?

I was wondering if I could actually send you a specific coin that I would like made into a ring...and if it's possible to get a man's size 13? I have a few more questions, but I don't want to waste your time. Your work is beautiful, an amazing gift idea!

@fencekid 9 лет назад
Stephanie Penglase OK, just click Ask Seller a Question on my etsy page and go for it. People send me coins all the time to be made into rings. Get a hold of me over there, and I'll go over the details. A size 13 would have to do with the size of the coin. I can make a quarter to a 13, but because it's stretched so much, it somewhat compromises the details on the coin. Perfectly legible, just not as raised up as on the coin. Hook up with me over there and give me the details about what's drifting through yer head, yeah? I never miss emails over there, and it's my main source of communication to customers. U Tube can be a bit of a different story. Comments slipping through the cracks all the time. Laters

I don't expect to an expert but would like for them to be presentable but I am hard to please myself so I expect some rejects for sure. I bought a cheap mandrel and needless to say the mandrel is destroyed. So new order is in. The other question is how to determine punch hole size for different coins and sizes? Thanks
@snowbirdhill1297
@snowbirdhill1297 9 лет назад
fencekid Oh by the way I changed my youtube name...lol
@fencekid
@fencekid 9 лет назад
Snowbird Hill the hole size dictates how wide your band will be. The smaller the hole, the wider the band. ring size has everything to do with how far you push it down the mandrel. I use a 7/16" punch hole for both quarters and halves to preserve as much of the coin as possible. But that's just me. These vids here on YT are when I was just getting started. I would try something new. And now that I've tried it, and know what to expect, it's time for a video. The rings that I sell these days are far superior to the ones I have here on YT. And that just comes with lots of practice. For me, I knew from the beginning what level of quality I was trying to reach. And with each ring I made, I would get one step closer to where I was trying to get. Once I got there, to where I could not produce a finer quality ring, it was time to open shop. And whalla......FencekidsCustoms was born. 7 months into being open for business, equated to 500 rings sold. How far will I go with it? Who knows.

I use a 7/16" punch hole for all quarter coin rings, and most half dollar coins. If you can't get it folded over before a size 4.5, use a dapping block and a bench vice to shrink it down up to 4 sizes smaller. Curling the Edges of a Coin Ring without a Ring Press So you could fold it over at a size 8.5 and then shrink the edges down to your 4.5. It will get rid of the "fat end" and add some sweet curve to the band as well. Let me know how it works out for ya, yeah? laters

I guess defacing currency isn't illegal in some countries, in my country a more than dozen ppl had been locked up for posting a youtube videos documenting how they make these harmless rings

All you need is a centering square, found on a combination square listed here... www.amazon.com/Oshlun-MTM-CS-12-Inch-Combination-Square/dp/B001KW00XY/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1455476253&sr=1-4&keywords=combination+square Works like a charm and doesn't require dozens of lines, but just two in the center. Use those two lines like crosshairs in your punch, and you're done..... As a machinist and fabricator, I've used this technique thousands of times and the accuracy is far better than you achieve with the method you're currently using, plus it's quicker. Cool hobby....have fun.
