Coin Shop Owner "Don't Bother Looking For Mint Error Coins!" You can still find mint error coins in coin rolls from the bank, I think I've proved that myself through my coin roll hunts but finding a 1969 doubled die penny is certainty like hitting the lottery! Brad from Coins Plus in Cincinnati shares his thoughts on mint error coins.

The thing I didn't hear mentioned is the fact roll hunting is FREE and has ZERO loss when done properly. I genuinely just enjoy looking through coins. Unlike the lottery where I'm losing $, I can always turn my coins back in. It's more about the fun and CHANCE of a rare coin without costing me that I like.

Education is the key. Understanding the minting process, true double dies and strike doubling, and exploring varieties are prerequisites for any novice numismatist. Yes, the internet is saturated with hype, misinformation, and fairy tales of incredible wealth. The simple fact is this: virtually all new errors are found by experienced numismatists, not novices, because we know what we're looking for. That said, anyone can search for errors provided they have done their homework as indicated. The more interested and educated people who want to participate in the hunt, the better for the hobby because we need them to help drive demand in the numismatic marketplace.

Great interview. What stuck with me is the importance of properly identifying the errors on a coin. I.E. properly identifying the terms "double die", "doubled die", "double strike" etc etc. What I was wondering after the interview is if there exists a comprehensive price list anywhere of how much to sell a particular error coin for. The prices seem to be all over the map. In any case this highly experienced shop owner was very enjoyable to learn from and thanks for the video ! Thank You Brad !

I thought the guy was a hack. Like I said on another guy's comment I want to go to his shop so I can buy those non double die but double stamped from him for face value because he was just being completely honest let's reiterate on what he said because I know two dies are not hiring the coin at the same time but that is just the coin getting struck twice hum so the possibility of two dies hitting the coin at the same time is possible or the die has doubling on it .

I had about 3 gallons of coins, my 12 year old and his friend helped me. I only found like 30 majority silver coins before 1964 out of all that change. I did find a cool dime, but I can't confirm what really happened to it or what it is. It has a bubble on the head that's pretty cool looking. ❤I look for errors. Why not? It only takes a second or two, to put a coin aside for further inspection. What my fascination is, is the thought of, "Who, Where, What, Why and How", behind each coin. Plus, sometimes you just have to wonder the travels the coin has been on. Honestly, I just like the concept of having a coin for every year since its' conception...the art can be so beautiful.

Coin roll hunting or looking through pocket change for valuable coins/errors etc is a passion. It’s something we do because we love to do it. Just because he believes it’s not worth his time to look through coins for errors is fine, he’s obviously not passionate about doing that and invests his time in other aspects of numismatics. He’s a shop owner, a business man. But I bet you dollars to donuts he has a few kids in the back of his shop looking through hundreds of rolls a day looking for error coins just like we do. So I don’t buy it. Error coins were and are to this day discovered because people took the time to look through many hundreds or thousands of coins. If no one took the time to explore then we wouldn’t know about any of the millions of error coins that are valuable today.

This is a shop owner that loves his job and what he does. I just started doing some free time coin hunting as a hobby, just sifting through my parents old change jars. Found some cool keepers but I'm more like this owner. I'd rather collect them, despite the condition, put the nicer examples in cases and books, then let my kid learn about them and pass it along in the family. I find more value in learning about the history behind the early years of the US Mint more than the actual value of the coin. On a plus side I work as a cashier, if your ever into coin hunting, thats the way to start getting fairly cool finds rather consistently. I've found die breaks straight from new bank rolls, silver quarters, dollar coins, and sometimes half dollars. I've been collecting bicentenial quarters. I absolutely love the design, and they are everywhere.

On a business trip in Chicago I bought some coffee and got back rare coins in change. I went through the line several more times buying things in order to get back maximum change from the cashier, and each time through I got more valuable coins. Someone had mistakenly cashed in a coin collection for face value, and I realized that everyone going through the line and paying with cash was getting parts of it back in change. I was probably the only one to figure it out immediately because I looked at my change and noticed I was getting back quarters and dimes and nickels from pre-1930. It was fun looking to see what was going to turn up each time through the line.

He is correct. Life is too short to waste it looking for the rare possibility of finding a valuable error. Most errors are minor and worth less than $10. I started collecting in 1958. From then until early '70s I was always searching for 1955 double die 1c. Went through many 100s of rolls. I did find what was termed " poor mans double die" Which had some doubling. Value: $5!

I love looking for errors on us cents LOL And have found some like the poor mans double die and the 1972 doo and d/d and S/s rpms BUT never find the error I'm hunting for its always the unexpected errors. For example I had a mint bag filled with 1995 cents and was looking for the DDO didn't find one but found one that was struck 2 times so it looks like lincoln is sitting shoulder to shoulder

I've been challenging this notion, so i invested $79 of a digital microscope, and time to look over my collection. Finding errors and varieties may be rare, but finding silver is not. I have been searching half dollar rolls, several boxes a week for 12 years or so and have accumulated over $10,000 in 90% and 40% silver. It is harder to find now than it was when I started, but I still find it. Volume is the secret.

More likely to find a note (bill/dollar) error than you are to find a coin error. Found a mismatched serial number, rare bill indeed. However, you do find weird coins for sure. I found a struck thru error thank had a good indent in the coin and it’s in a mint package from the mint so it’s not just damage. Very uncommon but they are out there. Very surprised the mint issuer (an employee) didn’t notice and keep it.

I found a 1965 Quarter in my change that had sold a few times on ebay for 1500. It had rim error. The joke is that the 65 was minted in philly only so there never was a need to put a mint mark. But people still buy them thinking that they are worth something.

I find dbl die coins all the time. You arent looking hard enough if you're not finding them. I mean actually staring at every single letter up down and sideways. Same with error coins. There all over. Ive even given my paper currency to my friends for all of their coins. I started with a handful of coins from US and various country's. In the last 10 years I've got a floor chest filled with error coins, dbl die, and a bunch of modern coin and European collections. I'm no where close to being rich. I just love the hunt. I'm also teaching my grandson what to look for. He will take care of them when I've left this world.

I have yet to find a really valuable coin while searching rolls and loose lots. The chances may be agonizingly minute; so, I started another tactic. Instead of trying to beat the odds, I started making decisions that give me a lot better chance of finding a special coin . I try to put myself in the path of treasure without expecting it. In doing so, I have already received blessings I never expected

Unfortunately this is one of those moments where credible people can be completely unaware that they are misinformed. Good for us the. Keep looking for anything you enjoy finding even if they aren’t real errors. It only takes one good find to make a huge difference and you just might have something in your pocket change!

If the US Mint began selling in-house errors, the temptation for them to start creating 100s/1000s of error coins "on purpose" would absolutely devastate the error coin market as we know it :' (

I agree with the shop owner, it wouldn't pay anyone to troll though thousands of coins in the hope of one day winning the lottery. Yet I always look at my change for a few seconds just in case. I live in Ireland (so generally speaking) before 1928 UK coinage circulated here. I grew up with IRL£, s, d. and UK £, s, d. circulating together, in 1971 both countries went decimal and in 2002 Ireland joined the Euro currency, so I've spent a lot of different coin varieties in the same country. In my father's pub I opened a bag straight from the mint of 1982 two pence coins made from bronze to find one struck from the wrong planchet an error coin but only worth about $110 I also have a George III 5pence Irish silver coin 1806 found in the field behind the pub possibly lost by a plow man, that might have been his days wages back then.
