True, it's an expensive one, but it does give extremely accurate readings on content. I've seen quite a few scenarios where gold stamped 10k was really 9k, and the acid tests also sometimes seem a bit inconclusive on exact karat content. That being said, I'm just an observer, not an expert. Not sure if XRF analyzers are worth it from a business standpoint, but they sure are fun to watch in action!

@@marteenStacking this machine is an xrf, and other olympus gun testers are xrf. Big problem is that they can't enter the gold very deep. That's why acides are always with a bit of pratice and experience, the best result for the money spent. And for coins and bullions I use the sigma pro tester wich is 100 % unbeatable.

Agree 100% and I wish we had done some coin testing in this video to show how it's an entirely different process than jewelry. I think there's one point where it's mentioned, that sigma testers should be a part of the equation for coins, but we didn't run any coin tests to show how different of a process it is. While we were testing , I did get a test in on coins in the XRF, to show why it's not a viable option for testing coins: ru-vid.comxzWE-xMji48?si=5YzQNNMKgxJmIGdZ The main reason I wanted to show this was in response to this short I saw from @EmpirePreciousMetals ru-vid.comxofcR2ChgdY?si=lKTkuc1xl6x-n3lv Not knocking him, he has a great channel, and I'm sure this video was made in good faith, but this is VERY misleading, as (you already know) that test is verifying only a very small area of the surface of that massive silver bar, it's not even a valid test for a 1 ounce silver bar let alone 100 ounces! I hope bullion buyers didn't see that and walk away thinking an XRF test will verify the content of silver bars!

@@marteenStacking indeed, it's pure fraud to say this because it's exactly the opposite. bullions and big bars will perfectly go on the sigma PRO, when you have the external bridge I mean when it's too big. And with the sigma pro you can know with 100% chances what's inside. That's mathematic (volume and electric resistivity). And the Sigma pro is wonderful because it tests also the surface of the sample. So maybe he has a marketing deal with Olympus but I don't have any deal with Sigma and I can tell It saved my money lots and lots of times including gold and silver fake bullions (1kg Fake gold bullion). I'd never use anything else on silver and gold coins and bullions.

XRF is a great tool that can support with many other metals , powders and more , for example some platinum wire contain 10% Rhodium if you have XRF you will know, dental scrap and more, also it give confidence. If you are checking bullions I suggest to add density test and ultrasonic test .

If you plate the correct volume mix of lead and cupric oxide (copper oxide black) with a very cheap amount of silver over it, it will pass the rolling neodymium magnet ball test, because none of those metals are very ferromagnetic. It will also pass the Ice test (ice placed where you hand's heat touched it will melt faster than ice placed where you haven't touched it), because lead and copper are both highly conductive to heat, just like silver. And, the outer silver plating will pass the Acid, Sound, and Bleach tests, because well.. it's silver plated. With the correct volume of lead, cupric oxide, and silver plating, the exact same volume of a troy ounce bar of silver can be created by a skilled smelter with the perfect weight, down to the hundredths of grams, and a troy ounce bar of it would actually only be worth about one US dollar. I discovered this the way I do many things. I decided to see for myself if it would be possible to create a perfect fake, just for the fun of it. Well, feel free to research this yourself. I used the Aqua-Calq volume-to-weight calculator to figure the amounts. Good nerdy fun. The only difficulty would be in quickly covering your cupric oxide powder in the liquid silver, so a chemical reaction is mitigated to a minor amount. Again, a skilled smelter could perfect the process over time, discovering perhaps how much extra cupric oxide powder would be needed to compensate for lost weight in the chemical reaction. I think this has probably been done, because there's nothing new under the sun. And, because people seem to be so dang sure of themselves in knowing that it's supposedly impossible. It's easy to fool someone of something they already believe.

That’s some Walter White type stuff! I would love to try it but would probably end up burning down my garage. Do you think it would pass the through test on a sigma metalytics verifier? From what I’ve seen those are pretty good at sniffing out plated coins and bars.

@@marteenStacking It wouldn't pass the test, even if only a sliver of alloy is inside the silver, because it sends an electrical signal through the metal and measures how many milliseconds it takes to pass through it. Every type of metal will take a different amount of time, and with every type of coin and bar measured and preset in the unit, it will detect any deviation from what it should be. With a well designed product like Sigma Metalytics has, I'd be inclined to trust the preprogrammed measurements. Just make sure you maintain the machine to keep it from malfunctioning. There's lots of fitness scales for measuring human BMI that use the same type of technology, but some are made very cheaply. And, it takes money to get a good sample of human measurements for accuracy with the majority of people who buy it. They can tell you what your approximate water weight is from the speed of the electrical signal that goes up one leg and down the other back into the scale. If you add your tape measurements into the app that comes with them, it can give your approximate BF percentage. So, they understand that there are variables which must be taken into account for more precise results. So, it stands to reason that the larger the Verifier device you get from Sigma Metalytics, the larger the computer processor, memory, and also the more information it can potentially hold for more complex testing. If you're trading gold and silver a lot from possibly questionable sources that might not test everything, it could be worth the value for peace of mind, I think. @@williamlyons3947 Plastic and silicone can hold in a bit of hydrogen gas long enough. The real challenge would be in finding the best carburetor nozzle for burning it in the chamber. That's why NOS is generally illegal in auto airflow applications. Makem go big boom. I'm sure there have been enough auto technicians who have played with it enough to create a body of practical engineering knowledge on the subject. When there's a will, there's a way.

My recomendation for heavy gold fill using the stone / acid : Do a series of three independent rubs on the stone using the same contact point of the metal in question. The 2nd or third rub should be dissolvable with the 14k gold acid. This technique allows one to rub off the thicker gold fill at a single contact point in the first 2 rubs. In other words the first rub may have significant gold in it. By the 3rd rub from this single contact point the gold for all intent and purpose should be just about gone.

I’m a complete novice just RU-vid learning about precious metal testing so appreciate this video and comments section. Only suggestion is to improve audio quality by using better microphones. Audio sounds rather tinny-tarnished (pun intended) otherwise production is solid gold.

Feel like specific gravity is the only way to be sure of what’s INSIDE the sample..otherwise your just testing the surface with all the methods here

Agree that acid tests and XRF scans are better for surface testing. The Sigma Metalytics Precious metals verifier does a great through test of what's inside for most coins and bars. Curious what you mean by "specific gravity", as I'm not familiar. Based on my surface level knowledge of physics I'm not sure how gravity could help us, but would love to hear more!

So what happens to jewelry being sold for the gold content that have faceted stones? Or rather, what happens to the stones?
