The COLA project aims to create novel laser-assisted cold-spray hardware that will be capable of depositing new high-quality coatings. Development of processing with this new hardware will bring the key benefits of:
•Improved deposit qualities, of finer microstructural scale with lower porosity content, free of oxidation and cracking, and with lower levels of residual tensile stress, guaranteeing component operation on return to service.
•Higher performance deposits, with higher strength and hardness, and improved corrosion resistance.
•Improved cost effectiveness in operation, with projected cost savings of €0.5-0.9M/yr/system, and higher rates of deposition, compared with competing processes.
•The ability for this process to deliver these benefits across a range of applications and industries.
