No, it’s cause he doesn’t throw power shots. He throws strikes with volume allowing him to pace himself a lot more. Similar to Holloway and The Diaz Bros
@@Combatsportsprodigy have you ever cut weight? I have, I wrestled and fought at 170 while walking at 190. My first weight cut I did 12 lbs in one hour on weigh in day and felt like crap. I learned to cut slower, cut less and rehydrate slower.
@@Dan-codes Yea I have actually. I wrestled at 126 and had to cut from 160 - 170 in the offseason. I currently box as well and have been doing so since age 8 and am cutting down to 125 from 170 at this moment. I’m well aware of the science of cutting weight been doing it all my life. I also recognize that wrestling and mma are not the same thing Stylistically. 100% Volume is what controls pace in fighting. Colby even said it to Joe Rogan when he was asked and Colby said he brings his power down to around 70% when throwing. Why u may ask? Because it’s about VOLUME. Not power. Same with Diaz bros and same as many other fighters who throw lots of strikes.
@@Combatsportsprodigy you're a maniac lol. I had a buddy like you that would cut from 200 to 135, he was about 5'4". I fought mma, and have trained since 2005, I'm fully aware of how it works. Cutting weight fast definitely negatively impacts performance.
Well drop weight and you will be the same weight so you lose the advantages of the weight it actually makes fights harder but in your head you still think you are bigger so it only gives an advantage for the convidence.. correct me if i'm wrong im not really a fighter like they are
Its just part of the culture. Always has been and if you can maintain your strength then you have an advantage. 10 lbs tops id say is ideal. Anything more and I think you lose edge.
The fact that Colby is one the smallest welterweights (compared to guys like Usman, Edwards, chimaev) yet hes also one of the best just shows how talented and skilled he is.
I agree. But I think more guys would do better. Fighting at their natural weights, look at rumble Johnson, became a bigger threat and more of a menace. The closer he got to his natural weight.
@@KOHoxton sure but not everyone. Usman should be a light heavyweight but he'd get destroyed at that weight. Keep him at 170 though and he's one of the best to ever do it
@khalood zizo he is not a big guy, if you wanna be honest, like DP probably weighs more than him and he fights 155, like khamzat probably sits at 220 easily that's why he is struggling to make weight at 170
Real 200 pounders don't cut to 145. That is such an exaggeration. Also, fat doesn't count so Paddy is out of the picture, he isn't a 200 pounder he's a fat LW
Colby deserves big respect for fighting at his real weight class(only cut about 12 lbs. Give or take depending) AND still wins most of his fights(2 of his three losses were to Usman so I mean...lol plus he was the only fighter to not get dominated by Usman plus win objectively at least 2 minimum rounds per/each fight against him!!
Yessir he’s the same weight as the LW fighters man if Colby cut weight like the other fighters he would easily be a monster in the LW division basically a better version of gamrot
As a wrestler for over a decade, you don’t get props for this. You wrestle or fight at whatever you weigh on the scale. Doesn’t matter if you’re weight bullying or not.
Poirier said on JRE back then that he got a call for a short notice fight when he was still at 145 and Poirier said he was 186 when he got that call.. All these LW are way bigger frame wise than Colby is they all walk around at 185-195 lol
Khabib fought in the correct weight class you mong lmao. You are an obvious casual who just repeats what other casuals say. Khabib cut more than Colby cuts, but he didn't cut more than most other LWs. You are one of those uneducated halfwits that doesn't understand ANY of the nuances of weight cutting and so you assume that if a fighter struggles to make weight, that makes them a weight bully.
@Alibek Kuanyshbek khabib fight night weight is 175+ max Chandler and QuitterVeira is 185+ QuitterVeira is also the biggest proven weight bully missing weight 5 times lol
@@David-lp4gd even if not, ONE Championship has a hydration rule where you have to make both weight and hydration levels, no reason for the UFC not to adopt it
@@David-lp4gd Yes, and its like this for most other sports as well. I fought in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments when I was younger. You get weighed in between 7-9 and fight later on in the day, that way you dont get these unnatural weight cuts where they destroy their bodies, but rather fight at their real weight, which is after you’ve taken a shit in the morning.
Well, although I agree with this, surely you’d cut more weight through camp anyway from eating cleaner and training more often, so your everyday weight might not be your healthy fight weight, when I weight cut in my camps I just drop weight naturally and gradually by doing those things I mentioned and can still drop like 6kg (roughly 16lbs) I think and feel fresh and healthy
I know I'm gonna get hate but I personally think many guys are also natural. you'd probably have around a 50-50 split. the only issue is it's hard to know who is and who isn't juicing
@@loverofhumanity Natural in terms of not taking test..Maybe, natural in terms of not taking hgh and peptides for recovery and epo for more conditioning..not possible.
@@hihihi1q23 who has Usman beat that’s any better than Colby beat 😂 Burns is the only guy. Colby beat Maia and RDA before Usman took his left overs and put on two snoozers in those fights.
@@Nomad-97 and you don't know how RU-vid works right it don't matter how old a video is it's still gunna pop up right and it just happen to be when he got his ass kicked and you replied to this old comment thread😂😂
@@BalkanManic Dustin and Chandler walk around at 190!!! And they are not "fat" they're big dudes. Gaethje has it under control. Now Khabib...Khabib was getting fat between camps. Tony who is just recently out of the top 10 won TUF at WW. JS, most of the LW division could be WW's. Nate is a good example of that too. So is Conor these days. This was a big up to Colby comment for staying in shape and being very competitive in a weight class that big ass dudes compete in. Because of the 15 pound jump between WW and MW there are HUGE dudes who fight WW.
@@systemdnb214 this moron thinks that guys like Dustin Porier are lean 190lbs in between fights then cut to 155. IF that was true he would be constantly losing muscle and gaining muscle which is not possible naturally that quickly. These guys just eat a bunch of food and train even less between fights so they gain some bodyfat and the morons here think theyre huge because all they can comprehend is weight. Almost like people can be 190lbs at different body fat levels and being 190lbs LEAN is much bigger than 190lbs of higher bodyfat. Colby stays in fight shape which is around 182lbs for him YEAR ROUND. While Dustins fight shape is like 170. And when I say theyre fat Im not saying theyre fat like normal people. Theyre fat for athletes and not in fight shape. They still look good to the average joe at those higher body fat levels
@@tieguy5129 ??? dariush, chandler, makhachev, gamrot, Arman, gaethje, gillespie and charles isn’t a wrestler but is def a grappler. literally one of the most grappler heavy divisions in the sport.
I always thought the same. It should be like that, not just a cut to make weight one day and then try to eat as much as possible to regain it. You should be around your weight for a year. That would make fights and weight division more fair
Not to mention he could easily drop down to 155 and beat everyone there. But respect to him for staying at his natural weight and always coming to the fight in shape
Colby spot on imo. Brings up great points about potential downsides to cutting a bunch of weight. And he shows benefits of not doing it too I feel, w his insane cardio. Of course it shows how hard he works too, respect to Colby
This may be the best solution for a natural fighter, that is. For others on PEDs they replenish their strength and conditioning much quicker so they can cut more weight
Justin Gaetjhe is like this too, he fights close to his natural weight. Shame he had to fight two grappling legends so close together. When he fights a banger, it's always a great fight.
I’m a fan of Gaetjhe but he didn’t lose to Oliveria because of grappling. He got dropped hard. You Could tell he was concussed. Oliveria pounced and took advantage of the situation. Not just his grappling
He was lucky to get both title shots and he lost to Oliveira because of the striking FIRST and then the grappling Lmao. Oh and gaethje does not fight around his natural weight. Lmao.
@@sos5764 Adjust your muscle mass to fit the weightclass. Like most guys fighting in 155 are similar frame and height to 170, they just focus more on strength training in the off-season and boom, they’re 170’ers.
I just wish the casual fan wasn’t attracted to the bad guy persona and the big mouth talkers in the sport because I really like Colby as a fighter and as his normal self. It’s just sucks that he had to create a character for fans to be interested 😞
Casuals hoping for a street brawl are annoying, but they keep the fighters lights on and food in their fridge. Can't hate on them too much. It's a spectacle sport after all, you have to be spectacular!
I don't see much evidence that the persona has done anything. Look at Whittaker or Holloway or Wonderboy or Oliveira or so. I think colby wanted to be a superstar like Conor too much.
@Sjoerd they actually threatened to cut him on a win streak early in his career cause he wasn't a big enough draw. That's when the character came out lol
@@mitch5944 yeah, that's what he says. Sounds like total bogus though. When is the last time a top contender (who is not retirement age either) on a win streak has been cut? Never.
what a legend! man's never lost an interview never lost a fight never lost a round. I don't even think he has ever been taken down. man's a legend respect
Hopefully severe weight cutting will be a thing of the past soon. Just bump every weight class up 10-15 lbs and change the weigh in schedule and rules regarding how much water weight you can put back on
He is one of the best pound for pound mma champ. He could easely cut a ton of weight and fighting one division under to face smaller guys and getting close to be the champ but he prefer having a healthy lifesfyle to keep his body strong longer by not eating shit off season or being extremely dehydrated each weigh in.
If you cut weight just to fight a smaller opponent, you should end up fighting another fighter your size doing the exact same thing , and thus therefore should just not cut weight and go ahead and fight in your normal weight class where you would have been fighting each other in the first place... Be a man and fight someone your own size or bigger but don't go fighting people smaller than yourself just for that particular advantage ...
@@danielbras5123 But when EVERYONE (except Colby) cuts tons of weight, then the advantage is gone. Like steroids, steroids are no advantage if everyone is using so let.them all use openly and quit the secret games of picograms and epo and shit and it'll be a MORE even playing field. And we'll see some FREAK SHOW!
Every person cutting 40-50 pounds to make weight shouldn’t be fighting in that class they really need to expose these weight bullies while Colby fights completely clean
This is exactly why Colby can take a fucking beating when he’s in the ring and stay standing. I don’t even like Colby but I absolutely respect his ability to take a mean punch or kick and stay standing like it’s no big deal.
Only interview where Colby is himself, personally think he’d sell just as many fights if he conducted himself just like this, when he does he’s actually a pretty likeable dude.
Definitely something to be said in this. Colby has taking some biggggg shots and recovered dam near immediately. Not to mention that clean hook Masvidal landed on the button, took a split second knee and was good.
My brother in law fought 4 fights in the UFC. I remember him saying he should be fighting at 170 but fought 35 lbs lighter (forgive me if I'm not exact I rarely watch the sport). He said everyone cuts extreme weight and the injuries would be less severe/fights would be better if the fighters didn't cut such extreme weight.
Same. I used to tell my brother this when he was in wrestling, he would cut so hard he lost energy and ability and of course the worst part was the destruction of his mood and such. He didn't believe me back then but when he looks back on it he wishes he didn't cut weight. People do think it gives them an advantage, but that's really only true if its done perfectly. More often, it puts you at a disadvantage.
This definitely explains the iron chin and cardio for days. Respect to this man for fighting at his real weight. Unlike that weight bully Kshot, that couldn’t make weight to save his life.
Colby is legit, no one can diss this guy, the fude with Masvidal is a madness,, he was out chilling and Masvidal sucker punched him because some rat set him up, ain’t his fault and he shouldn’t have to pay hospital bills for that , the guy beat Masvidal fair and square in the cage, the fude was settled , but Masvidal couldn’t handle the heat, & took it outside the cage , thats on him, cant wait for Colby to return and show us why he is NO.1 contender at 170 !!!
