As an Aussie I’m so rapt you did this one! The guys name is Jimmy Barnes, and he’s a powerhouse. Back when this was recorded, he was a terrifyingly huge drinker and this shows the raw talent he still had. He’s cleaned up now, but still a national legend!
Not to mention, he was about 50% amphetamines...but yeah, Barnsey is 100% Aussie rock god (despite actually being Scottish). . Btw guys, I am so glad you did this one. Reactions to Cold Chisel are *extremely* few and far between. Which is amazing. I'm sure you've heard of the "big 4" of thrash? Well, Chisel was one of the big 3 of Oz Rock, along with The Angels and AC/DC. I know you know Akka Dakka, but check out "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" by The Angels (preferably something recorded live in Australia - you'll see why 😏).
Nam vet here, this song by chisel and "I was only 19" (AKA "A walk in the light green") by Red Gum pretty well sum up a lot of our feelings about our experiences.
Those are 2 of the greatest ever Australian rock songs, cheers for mentioning 'I was only 19' to anytime I hear that song I get shivers down my spine,Thanks for your service mate 🍻✌
I wanted to take the time to thank you for your service. If it wasn't for men like you, the world would be a far different place. The youth of today, just do not understand the sacrifices you all made so we can enjoy the freedoms we do today. I cannot imagine what it was like for those who fought in Vietnam, I thank you for your courage and service.
James my respect for your service , always makes me so thankful I was to young to be there but old enough to loose some good friends, there but for the grace go I.
There is a cover of only 19 by the herd which I have a lot of love for, the original is iconic but appreciate that they brought an important song to the modern day
I 100% guarantee most Aussies know these lyrics better than those of our National Anthem. So much so that it's kind of become an unofficial anthem itself. Source: Aussie.
Yes. True story: I was on a train back to Strathfield station in Sydney after the Foo Fighters concert in 2018. Our carriage sang a snippets of a couple Foo Fighters songs before we broke into a rousing rendition of Khe Sahn. I helped the drunk guy next to me get the words in the right order. Good times.
Exactly, you see yobbo's half pissed trying to sing it, and the meaning has gone a mile over their heads. As my vet Uncle said, it dosent mean the same to them as me.
@@malcolmcurthoys5273 I saw him at The Ferntree Gully Hotel once. He had the whisky bottle in hand whilst belting out the songs. He staggered to the edge of the low stage and kind of flunked off rather than full on falling. He didn't seem to even be aware he had done it, he just kept singing. The crowd loved it of course. He's managed to keep the bottle in his hand the whole time.
@@triarb5790 classic that would've been GOLD yeah he's from Elizabeth here in Adelaide he used to do shows for the bikies in his early days so ur comment doesn't suprise me..cheers mate for ur comment
Cold Chisel is one of the biggest ever bands to play in the genre of "Pub Rock". in the 70s and 80s you could go to almost any pub in Australia and party to this sort of music Live. a couple of other bands worth checking out are the Angels and Screaming Jets. they are both awesome.
70s and 80s pub rock in Oz was the best time of my life. I saw the Angels, Cold Chisel, Aussie Crawl, Split Enz, Mother Goose, The Sports, Swannee, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, Screaming Jets, AC/DC (yes in a pub), Billy Thorpe - and the list goes on...
"There legs were often open but there minds were always closed", is the line that got this song banned on Australian commercial radio when it was released.
Wow a cold chisel reaction. This is a great Aussie rock band led by the great Jimmy Barnes and this song is an Australian classic that everybody knows the words to. Love it.
Pretty sure that was Sydney entrainment centre on the Last Stand tour. I saw them on that same tour and we had won the America's Cup at 5am that morning. The venue (The old Newcastle Workers Club) released 1500 more mezzanine tickets in honour of the win. It was epic...and that would be an understatement.
One of the greatest. Unfortunately the live version distorts the lyrics a bit for stage appeal. Brilliant song and everyone knows the lyrics anyway so it doesn't really matter, but if you have never heard them before you probably miss the absolutely brilliant poetry and story telling. Great reaction though.
Agreed. He is brilliant live for his performance and energy, but to really appreciate the the power of his lyrics you need to hear a good quality recording.
You don't know what's it's like to be an Aussie who's been in the US for nine years now (tis me), all those years away from home, and then hear Khe Sanh.
One of my favourite rock bands. You should listen to "Bow River" live which features the lead guitarist (Ian Moss), who has a great voice, singing with the lead singer, Jimmy Barnes. Jimmy Barnes is a legend in Australia. These blokes were brilliant live and they cover so many different genres of rock. Another good Cold Chisel song is "Flame Trees". I subscribed because you often listen to Metallica and now you've added a Cold Chisel song. Great stuff!
A band called game over did a crazy punk cover of this song. Highly influential Aussie band worth checking out for any song, game over, to reiterate :)
Yeah we have so many Unofficial Anthems in Australia as we had the best rock band and artist in the 60, 70 & 80s etc Jimmy Barnes is a rock Legend he’s had a great career with Cold Chisel and he own solo career which you should check out especially he’s duo with John Farnham- Something is wrong with my baby.. it’s just Amazing 2 of the the worlds best doing what they do best singing their souls out.. do yourself a favour and listen too it you won’t be sorry !🇦🇺
OMG so thrilled to see this! This song is so iconic here in Australia! Cold Chisel are iconic! Dead set legends, all of them. Every Australian knows this song and if they don't we have them deported 😁 You should know it was written by the pianist, Don Walker. Please do Bow River 🙏🙏
My generation grew up with the Cold Chisel and Barnsey. But it wasn’t until decades later that most of us actually understood what that song was about.
Dei here. Fantastic reaction, as always, and it was probably the right choice as a substitute after Powderfinger's Like a Dog got blocked. Really enjoyed this considering it was a very last minute thing. This song never gets old. Jimmy and the boys slayed it. Sadly, the last plane out of Sydney left a long time ago, and with the lockdown, ..."it's really got me worried, I'm going nowhere and I'm in hurry". Didn't realise how appropriate those words were! lol.
Thankyou for this reaction. Love you guys. Jimmy is a living legend here in Oz. Absolutely prolific performer with Cold chisel, and as a solo artist. check out "Big Enough" by Kirin J. Callinan, as a giggle. He released an autobiography, Working Class Boy a few years ago. He speaks out about child abuse now following his own experiences. But for a harmonica artist like no other…Chris Wilson, RIP, would have to be one of the best. And his blues music and soulful voice make him a must for you to hear, Julia
What’s amazing about Chisel is the variety in their music. Truly an amazing mix of a musicians band but with great sensibilities on song craft and arrangement, making it all super accessible, without watering down the quality of the musicianship. They should have been really big around the world.
Seeing this live in concert with another 20,000 Aussies is beyond words, the stage lights up, the piano kicks in and Jimmy starts to belt it out......everyone instantly loses their shit and goes nuts, if you dont know the words to this song your not Australian, hearing and singing along with 20,000 people is one of the greatest experiences of my life......i miss the 80's
This is an Iconic Australian "Anthem".... It is a tribute to Australian Military Service Personnel. Those that served in the Vietnam War and then came home to an un-caring Nation. Many struggled with PTSD and re-integrating back to civilian live. Many felt forgotten an unappreciated. A similar story faces our current Veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq. They deserve better.
Aussie bloke here 80's kid. You guys randomly came up on my tv on youtube, never seen you before, so I just had to sign in and say that it was like hearing this iconic Aussie anthem for the first time again, sharing your pure joy. Loved it! Wooo!
Australians who grew up in the 80s and 90's know what they got. We're well aware of the absolute world class talent and the plethora of incredible rock we produced at that time. With a population at the time of around 16 million, along side the United States Southern rock movement, Australia owned rock'n roll at that time. It was an incredible time to be alive because we all knew it. These were our anthems. Rock on my Gen X Aussie brothers and sisters. Thanks for your interest.
I must admit, I came very close to requesting Bow River, that and/or the in the round live version of When the War is Over. I think Bow River is definitely worth doing.
@@kane29842 Maybe one of us can switch to When the War is Over. Which version of Bow River do you think is best? I really do like the energy of the 80's version. Will check the ringside version, though. I'd also like to do a Hunters & Collectors at some point.
LOVE YOU GUY'S FOREVER FOR DOING THIS MY BROTHER WHO IS NOW 74 WAS A SAPPER IN VIETNAM I SAW COLD CHISEL OVER 40 YEARS AGO IN BRISBANE AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 💙 ❤
Khe Sanh is so well known by so many Aussies that we're honestly surprised that its iconic lyrics are not yet on the naturalisation exam for people who wish to reside in Australia. Cold Chisel with Jimmy Barnes produced many, epic hits & many of us here are surprised that they aren't as well recognised globally as are AC/DC, INXS, Men at Work, John Paul Young, The Easybeats & others
In his drinking day’s sculling a bottle of vodka was nothing to the legend Jimmy Barnes. Best place beside Steve(RIP)He was a crisp drummer just driving the beat. All the bands partied hard. Everyone sang along.
Dave Blight is the guy on harmonica, was part of their touring band. He had his own band in Adelaide called The Flyers which included the brother of Phil Small the bass player for Cold Chisel they were a great pup band.
Hey guys.. great reaction to something very special for Aussies 🇦🇺 You mentioned a crowd singing along, well that’s why is the unofficial national anthem.. it got the title because it’s said Australians know the lyrics more than the do the national anthem 👍
For some reason you guys just popped up in my youtube reccomendations. So glad it did, great reaction. Hope you do more classic Aussie stuff like this.
I can remember nights at the Observer Hotel (pub under the Sydney Harbour Bridge) where there were about 20 people and this band came on and tried out some new material - it was the Barking Spiders - who are Cold Chisel... Amazing nights with Jimmy and boys trying out new material... Incredible...
Cold Chisel is easily one of the top 3 Aussie bands with INXS and AC/DC of all time. but most Americans only know of 2 of the 3. I have been to about 5 or 6 Chisel concerts and it is always fun, loud, and enjoyable, all Chisel fans come together and lift the atmosphere even higher.
You asked what it's like to hear them in Concert. Well, I'm an Aussie & after the last concert that I saw, I was deaf for about 3 days. But, well worth it
First album I ever bought as a teen in the 80's was Cold Chisel 'Barking spiders live' - I then became obsessed and followed Cold Chisel everywhere I could. I'm still obsessed with Jimmy - he's now a phenomenal soul singer.
I feel like I have to comment... When I was 14 Cold Chisel did their reunion tour (unfortunately missing the drummer as he has passed away) I was pulled out of school, funnily enough it was during music class, and I got to go to the theatre to see them play. They were so amazing, Jimmy's voice is still absolutely amazing. But during this song and Flame Trees, I saw everyone jump down the building and join the main crowd down the bottom. I'm talking people who were well into their 50's jumping down the stairs to run and make a mosh pit. I've been to quite a few gigs, not sure I'll ever beat that one.
Another great Aussie band where the whole pub sings along is The Screaming Jets. They had 2 great songs - Better and Helping Hand. Both are great pub songs and I now you will love them.
Cold Chisel always wanted to be an album band but there was demand to release Khe Sanh as their first single so they did. It was banned soon after due to the nature of the song .... then they became the biggest rock act of its era.
Haha, I love that you pointed out the pace of the song. I wouldn't have known this if I hadn't been reading Jimmy Barnes' (the lead singer's) autobiography , but Barnesy was obsessed with Cold Chisel being the hardest, fastest and loudest band it could be and when on stage he'd constantly be riding the band to get them to play faster, harder and louder. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't and they pushed back, either way that push and pull created a great tension and release dynamic for their performances. And now that I know that, I can't help but laugh when during that harmonica solo, we can see Jimmy walk straight over to the Keyboard player (and main songwriter, including this song - Don Walker) and start thumping on his piano, I can only assume to get him to push the tempo some more. And if I'm not mistaken, when Jimmy gets back on the mic, the song picks up tempo and becomes a sprint to the finish. It just adds another level of enjoyment for me, knowing what I know now.
Each line of this song took me at least a couple of paragraphs to explain it to my non Australian friend. When he finally understood the song he shed a tear. When I saw his tears I knew he understood this unofficial Australian anthem.
Absolutely All Aussie know this incredible song jimmy has also amazing range in his vocal’s. Seeing them life in a pub on a Friday night gets everyone tapping away . Another great reaction
