It was the Zeitgeist for such fashioned Musicals. BAKER STREET now often just called Sherlock Holmes is one of my personal favirites. in it´s time the writers just did the mistake to make a satirical fun to mock about the Sherlock Holmes Irragulars - here a Fan Club with to influential members. The death stroke for the musical tto become well known. Compar4e the numer ANYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW - also on RU-vid.
Why the vitriol? Baker Street is a better than average second-rank Sixties Broadway musical--and that's actually pretty good. No, it's not a landmark for the ages; it's a fun show with a delightful score, a smashing set of Don Walker orchestrations (I could listen to those orchestrations all night), and lyrics that capture Holmes' voice to perfection in all four of his numbers. The tone throughout is meant to be more than slightly tongue-in-cheek (if not quite so tongue-in-cheek as It's Superman, another better than average second-rank Sixties Broadway musical from the following year), and yet it's more realistic than My Fair Lady, in that Holmes and Irene do not get together at the end. Yes, the show does have flaws, but I think its virtues more than outweigh them.
