Troy, thank you for performing these trials of unprotected fig trees and sharing the results in these videos. Your videos are incredibly helpful to me.
De La Roca!!! I am a serious collector and have a true De La Roca mother tree. It is freaking awesome "Period"... If you would to see pics of leaves and figs of a confirmed DLR tree, and get some cuttings let me know and I will give you my email. A tip on DLR, it has to be very ripe to have all its flavor, and then it is Dense, Jammy, a little Chewy, with loads of flavor, it is a true top shelf fig without pollination. The Berry flavors are killer, the aftertaste is just that great berry flavor lingering on the tongue for as long as several minutes, in an enjoyable way. It has been very high quality from the get go. Yr 1 it was awesome, yr 2 it was awesome, yr 3 (this year ) it is Freaking Awesome! It can be a chameleon of sorts in coloration, sometimes mostly green with soft purple streaks, this year mostly purple with a light green neck. After 6 seasons now, and growing well over 100 trees, DLR is one of the 14 kept. And is in my top 5 in flavor quality as well as performance and consistency. And once established has a tight closed eye, even with heavy watering twice a day in a pot , the eye is small to closed. I keep only the absolute highest quality copy of any variety, so my mother trees are the strongest most Fruitful trees possible. I don't give props to just any fig, but this one earns it's reputation, I will have a few cuttings from this tree , but not too many. I would like for you to wind up with some from me though, I can tell you love figs, and this one could make a very good fig for your purpose. Happy Figging...
its really good... but it hates water when ripening... it will split if i water my in ground tree.. and i just like give very small amount to it like 2 a week its... so if you keep it dry its great and has had a amount of people at the farmers market really like it
Teramo was my first fig to Ripen this year. But I do a little winter protection and they start ripening 2 weeks to a month sooner. I know it takes more effort. But it seems they would do a lot better not competing with the grass roots. I would think a ring of mulch would really help.
my biggest problem here with mulch is the vomes it a stubby pig nose short tailed mice looking things and the year i mulch they eat 7 trees roots and all.... i need to mount them up and put some weed barrier on them and cover the weed barrier with pee gravel..... i have like that and they get boxes put over them and the thrive... the hardy chicago has 350 + on it... this orchard has all been meant to be just throwed out there like some retail shopper would go buy it and do and see with one did good with little to no effort.... an experiment
Glad I don’t have as much of a problem with them. The grass really causes the trees to struggle more than they should have to. It chokes them out. I’m working on that solution in the orchard I am very close to starting. Like possibly this week.
That is not Goutte D'or ,that is Alma ,they are very different ,Goutte D'or has breba and will ripen faster than Alma plus they are different as taste ,I live in Europe and I have a Goutte D'or from France and it is in his 3 rd year ,it is loaded with figs :)
