We tried this for our camping trip. We still had solid ice and perfect food saving 4 days later with 5 kids going in and out!! Thank you for this video and suggestion.
This was a good video - great information. I think that this business about your cooler becoming a "bomb" is a myth. The dry ice will gas off CO2 for sure but it doesn't collect in your cooler under pressure. Even if it did, it would just pop the lid up a bit unless you have one of those coolers with the snap down clasp. Also when you mix dry ice with regular ice , the regular ice will stay frozen longer but it will eventually melt. WHen you leave the plug open on the bottom the resulting water will run out into your vehicle. This could leave your car smelling pretty bad (personal experience).
Used dried ice for years when taking the kids camping. We would camp for 2 weeks with2 coolers. The cooler with the dried ice was our freezer and the other just to keep things cold. The system worked well especially since we would be up on a mountain with the town would be below.
This is a good way to Crack a cooler after a few uses this way. You should get a piece of Styrofoam to put on bottom then sit dry ice on it. It will extend life of dry ice and save coolers integrity. That's if you care about your cooler and want to do this method from time to time.
@@GabiGarza123no water will speed up your meltdown time. I bought myself a refrigerator cooler now so I don't personally do this method anymore. But this method works for about 5 days if you don't have ppl steady opening it.
@@WandomZhiEt unless you can make sure it doesn't melt at all I wouldn't. Moisture or any water will shorten the time of the dry ice. I did however use a gallon water jug, let it freeze
@@JUNKTV420 the blue stuff is a gel sold in a sealed plastic container, when its frozen its as hard as a block of ice, i put mine in the deep freeze when i get home from work everyday, its ready to go the next morning. i have never bought ice for my cooler, people i work with buy ice everyday, then dump out the water from the melted ice. the blue stuff i use, i have had since 1997 when i first started using a cooler. its in a sealed plastic container so its always ready to use even after all these years. i have yet to had to throw one away because it leaked or the container was broken. the ones i bought, i bought at walmart, have yet to buy new ones to replace the ones i bought all those years ago. not having to buy ice saves me a fortune every year.

Dry ice gives off gas that will out you to sleep, not smart putting it in ur vehicle. A high quality cooler packed with block ice and loose ice properly packed will keep for 5 days n.p.
it would be better if we could just buy water ice cooled to the temperature of dry ice because water has more than double the heat capacity of carbon dioxide and should therefore perform more than twice as well as dry ice if it was that cold. i imagine nobody sells super-cold ice just because it's dangerous to touch and you'd have alot of customers that don't understand water ice could be made dangerous, but it wouldn't be overly expensive and doesn't have that pressure buildup hazard since it's not expanding to a gas
@@climber5373 the blue stuff that hardens in the freezer, is 100% reuseable, never have to buy ice/dump water out of your cooler again. used with dry ice should last a long time. i have my blue stuff in several bottles, i put them in the deep freeze everynight, they keep my drinks cold all day long, even during the summers here in vegas.
Super cold water ice would help somewhat, but not as much as you might think. The reason is that water ice and dry ice get most of their cooling power from the "latent heat" of the phase transition (melting in the case of water ice and sublimation into CO2 gas in the case of dry ice). The specific heat of water ice is 2.1 kJ/kg/K, meaning that one kilogram of ice will absorb 2100 Joules of heat energy for every degree Celsius it warms. Dry ice sublimates at -78.5C, so in warming from that temperature to 0C, the freezing point of water, one kilogram of water ice would absorb 1kg*2.1 kJ/kg/K*78.5K = 164,850 Joules of heat energy. The latent heat of water ice is 334 kJ/kg, meaning that one kilogram of ice will absorb 334,000 Joules of heat energy just by melting at 0C. The total heat absorbed by 1kg of water ice pre-cooled to the temperature of dry ice would be 164.85 KJ + 334 kJ = 498.85 kJ. So, pre-cooling water ice to the temperature of dry ice would enable it to cool around 50% (49.4%) better than just a bag of ice at the freezing point of water. But, you probably wouldn't get quite that much benefit because a typical freezer cools to around 0F or -17.8C. So a kilogram of water ice that you pulled out of a typical freezer would absorb an additional 2.1kJ/kg/K*17.8K = 37,380 Joules of heat energy, giving a total of 334,000J + 37,380J = 371,380 Joules of heat energy. That means the added benefit of pre-cooling water to the temperature of dry ice instead of 0F would be around 34%, which is significant, but probably not worth the expense of more expensive freezers. The latent heat of sublimation of dry ice is 571 kJ/kg, which still compares favorably to the 498.85 kJ/kg of heat energy absorbed by water ice starting at the temperature of dry ice. This ignores the little bit of specific heat provided by liquid water and gaseous CO2.
@@dansanger5340 yah the non-linearity in energy requirement to raise temperature across "state-of-matter" phase transitions (solid->liquid, liquid->gas) is huge, and I wasn't considering that the water ice does 1 but the dry ice does both, and making water ice colder takes no additional advantage of that i remember the main blocker i found with this though was that dry ice isn't even made by refrigerator equipment; it's made by the cooling caused by depressurizing CO2 out of a tank. To buy super-cold refrigeration equipment is insanely expensive, and there's almost nothing on the market that can cool down to the temperature of dry ice
Yes. personally I am a bit paranoid about making a dry ice bomb (dry ice in sealed container), so I take it out of the plastic and wrap it in a towel to keep it from touching the food in the chest
You're going to have to keep your ice sealed if it melts on top of your dry ice your dry ice won't last very long. He said he could pour water in it and make more ice I'll just leave it at that

Bomb? I have never had a problem with no drain plug on some of my coolers when I go camping, and I've been doing it for years. Never exploded, maybe I got lucky lol
Thank you so much for making this video, I’m going on a weeklong camping trip and I’m not sure how to pack a cooler for a week and keep everything cold!! I do have another question though, is it only when you’re loading the cooler that you open the vent? And then you close it the rest of the time?

I used to sell ice cream sandwiches & juice bars @ as a Disneyland cast member. We used dry ice to keep this items frozen for a few hours... don't know about any longer, though.
@@sparklecreations so I tested it on my titan cooler. All you do is put the ice cream underneath the dry ice spread out. I also kept the dry ice in a plastic bag. With a hole in it.
This is what I do every time I go camping for more than 2 days. I have not tried making ice because I have not needed to, but dry ice is cold enough to freeze water if you wanted to do that. If I leave the cooler shut most of the time and don’t add a bunch of new things that need to be cooled down into the cooler, I can normally get a week or so of cold out of this setup depending on how hot it is outside (things heat up faster in the summer around here!)
Search online for local grocery stores that sell dry ice. In my case I went to winco. Usually have to ask for it when you get to the store. Also be careful! It is cold enough to burn you, so treat it like something out of the oven…. Something not to be touched with bare hands
Trip was fun! Went to Yosemite and had a great time outdoors climbing in The Valley. I did end up having to buy one bag of ice though because we left the cooler open ......
When dry ice sublimates (it doesn’t “melt” it turns from ice to gas), the CO2 gas can build up and create pressure (like shaking up a soda). This can get dangerous if you have a sealed container with a bunch of dry ice. As long as the cooler isn’t air tight you should be fine.
