7.1 average mpg. Yup, looks like a 6.8 to me!

Yep... bitter cold snaps, that's all they'll give ya, no matter how much you baby them.

this is why putting naturally aspirated gasoline engines in heavy commercial trucks makes no sense

100% always use turbo diesels. @@idkwuisp7626

Our f550 got exactly this too. 4.88 gears didn't help it either.

The 6.8 in stock form, has got to be the most over-engineered boat anchor I've ever seen... but I still like them, for some odd reason (mostly just the insane engineering). I just wish they'd done more with it. I have yet to understand why they stuck with 90° bank angle... but it's one of many checkmarks on Ford's list of modularity, that didn't even help production costs.

We got an f-550 chassis bus at work and that sum bit** has an exhaust leak. When you start it up or take off from a stop its soooo loud haha.
@wsor4030
@wsor4030 6 месяцев назад
Ours have in the past as well. If it wasn't cracked exhaust manifolds, then it was the flange where the Y-pipe bolts up to the back of the cat. converter.

or the cat is stolen from the vehicle
@ImExcalibastard
@ImExcalibastard 6 месяцев назад
Thats what I thought it was at first but when I crawled under there the cat was safe and sound surrounded by its theft resistant cage. Id imagine it probably suffered the same issue that wsor described on his trucks.

@@ImExcalibastard we always knew when either the manifolds were beginning to crack, or when the flange was leaking. You could smell raw exhaust, like on a non-convertor vehicle.
@ImExcalibastard
@ImExcalibastard 5 месяцев назад
@@wsor4030 I always described the smell as really rich which is probably misleading since it doesn't burn any oil or smoke at all but yes ours definitely smells really strong too. They just retired the thing and now its sitting in the graveyard area of our yard.

That power steering whine cold ford could do better . Those v10 make a 8.1 gm look economical. Uses a ton of fuel zero torque and always broke has been my experience use to maintain a fleet of them so glad we went gm 6.0 have yet to pull one the 6.8 we had on zipper kits couldnt replace them fast enough and dont even ask about the 36 k bomb transmissions .

Yeah, single digit gas mileage was an everyday occurrence, no matter what the weather. 8 in the Winter, 9 in the Summer. The best I ever achieved was 11 with a long stretch of interstate. Exhaust manifolds are junk. We end up replacing them about every 40,000 miles. Our oldest truck, a 2003, we were able to find headers for that bolted right up to the Y-pipe & cat, but, not our newer trucks. Rear end leaking is another issue. They don't do well on hills at all, spending plenty of time at 4,000 rpm trying to keep up. Aside of those 3 issues they've been reliable. I'm just glad it's not my pennies paying the repair bills. Oh, we did have our 2015 blow the motor at 140,000 miles. That was over 10 grand to fix. Lots of recalls on these beasts, too.

No idea when the 6.8 was unreliable. Just poor fuel economy but that's it really. Fairly basic and reliable engine
@wsor4030
@wsor4030 5 месяцев назад
@bldontmatter5319 they're reliable, I'll give them that. Just horrible climbing grades & a lot of piddly little crap is poor quality on them.
