There is so many videos out there of other people showing how to start the Bayliner 175. In fact on person literally opens his throttle all the way full trying to start. Others pump the throttle so many times more than what is needed. So today after my 175 sitting unused for at least a month or two I started it.

Nice video. Here is the deal. Crank if for 5 sec and then pump it 3 times. No need to pump it before you get fuel in the carb. If the carb already has fuel it will start before you crank it.

Most, if carbureted, and recently run, will start with one full throttle pump, and then return to about 30% throttle, then crank. If it has sat for some time, a little carb priming might help. Doing this many pumps with mine would flood it, as I've had the carburetor modified to increase the size of the ports under the accelerator pump, to get rid of hesitation upon acceleration. Fuel injection is a different animal, of course. AND, what works for YOUR boat may not work for every other 120/140/3.0. But, whichever fuel system you have, FIRST: run that blower at least five minutes before cranking, or better yet, lift the engine cover and visually inspect for leaks, and sniff for gasoline before turning anything on. A boat explosion is no fun at all.

I start mine a bit different. As you state, it doesn't help to pump it if the fuel bowl is empty. If you haven't started it in a month, the fuel bowl is most likely empty. Crank for 5 seconds then pump then start.

@fenderbassfan
@fenderbassfan 8 лет назад
I start mine about every month too because if I don't it ends up not idling and bogging down when you rapidly accelerate. Never had any problem until I moved to Palm Springs where it gets super hot. California gas doesn't have a very long shelve either and fuel stabilizer didn't help. I even installed and extra fuel filter and shutoff valve and that helped for one year but it was back to having the carb worked on the next year which had become a yearly necessity. Btw, when starting my Mercruiser 3.0 don't ever have to give it any throttle and it always starts right up. Since I've moved here I have to start all my small engines for my motorcycles, ATV's and generators too or they get gummed up really fast and only after a couple of months. I also siphon the gas (always make sure I don't bring it back with more than a 1/4 tank) and put in fresh 3 or 4 gallons.

I installed a manual fuel pump, the kind you find on small outboard engines, and all I do is pump it a few times untill I feel some resistance in pumping and then the motor starts first or second time I try. The previous owner used to spray wd40 in the carb and had a real hard time starting the motor.

Great video. This is my 10th season of my 2006 BL 175, and over the course of those many years, I have developed a very similar methodology for cold (more like hasn't been run in several weeks) cranks. It just gave me hell in particular trying to start it on a cold evening yesterday on a cold October day in Pittsburgh, PA. Had to do this about 3 times with time in between to prevent flooding when the first 2 tries didn't turn. Man, your boat is spotless, what year?

You are going to need a voltage meter and check various points of the wiring for the trim solenoids and fuses. If you have one already or not get a wiring diagram for your set up. They are all over the web. It could be as simple as a corroded plug, or a bad switch.

any fuel vapors in the engine compartment get sucked out for a safe start. After planing at cruise you can safely shut the blower off.

Turning the blower on for a cold start is absolutely unnecessary. There are no vapors in the engine when it hasn't been running in weeks...there are no fuel vapors produced by an engine that hasnt been running. That's why theres a thing called a fuel tank......

I think something with your carburetor settings or fuel/air mixture is wrong. This motor shouldn‘t start up so hard. I had an old 3.0 without TKS built 1994. Startet up perfectly with only pumping 2-3 times and 1/4 throttle even when not used for a longer time. On daily use on vacation, 1 pump and little throttle was enough for cold start. In my current boat i have a 5.0 carburetor. Cold starts without pumping at all, little to no throttle depending on outside temperature

@mswilkes1
@mswilkes1 9 лет назад
Defeats the purpose of TKS (turn key start); not pump 5x-crank-pump 3 more times-start. You need to clean the carb.
@fiero880
@fiero880 9 лет назад
According to the Mercruiser manual, "If the engine has not run for a long period of time it may require a couple of attempts while the fuel bowl refills." Exactly how is cleaning a perfectly clean carb going to fix that ? And inside the manual it also states if needed you can open the throttle to full and then back to 1/4 to start. So instead of letting the engine loop over and over and several attempts if the engine has sat a long period of time, pumping the throttle 5 times to get what fuel may be in the bowl or fuel that has just come into the bowl to help assist the cold start ? TKS is a great system but it still requires the old fashion starting procedures as before.

@robertcarsley7031
@robertcarsley7031 7 месяцев назад
First, you run the blower for 4 or 5 minutes before the water or starting not just a few seconds. I realize that would make for a long boring video but you at least have to say it. Second, you don't run the water without the engine running just as you don't run the engine without the water running. Both should start at the same time - within a few seconds of each other - the same time is preferred. Third, if it doesn't start in the straight up and down position within a few seconds of cranking you have a problem that should be looked into. That's why it's called turnkey. Back and forth 20 times? You shouldn't have to do it once. And you shut off both the water and engine at the same time - within a few seconds of each other
