Awesome Blade. I own both versions and your not loosing much with this blade over the $300 version. The AUS10 is alot better than people give it credit for, check out Cedric & Ada's cut test , this blade did over 150 cuts on Cecil rope with the Factory Edge , VG10 only did 80 , and D2 did about 120 , and they had reprofiled 20° mirror edges not Factory, AUS10 is 1 of the Best non-powdered steels out there and its definitely my favorite woods/working steel because it's also pretty tough and pretty easy to sharpen. If your a CS fan this is a must have .....👍⚔🖖
yeah but the factory edges aren't so good comparison because they can be so different. I think the better result is after Pete sharpens them himself to same level of sharpness and edge angle than the rest of the knives. Don't gt me wrong, aus10 is a great steel, but well heat treated D2 still has better edge retention (over 400 cuts was the best result for D2)
But you know my friend, different steel is good in egde retention in different sharpen angles. Weak steel need 15 angle or so, good steel can be sharpened even 21 degree
I bought the Italian 20CV version and dyed the scaled with RIT Racing Red. The Grey G-10 scales became a deep purple and look beautiful. Love the knife, makes my other hard use folders (mostly framelock) seem fragile in comparison. I would batton with the 4 Maxx in any version without worry. Never would I batton a frame or liner lock.
I have a 4 Max Scout in tan color, and i wear it all the time. This is a perfect knife for me, becayse i live in a rural aeria in the Norwegian deep forest. I dont even notice it in my pocket.
From the research I've done and the actual testing I've done myself. I will use this knife like afix blade if need be. I love my 4 max scout and i trust that it can handle what i need done
The washers are a bronze-teflon combo, as Nick Shabazz shows in his video. It was the same in my Recon 1, but the action is very smooth though... I expect my 4max in a week or so, cannot wait!! Thanks for the video
Funny how it makes the Recon 1 look kinda small. However, I've been carrying my Recon 1 (spear point) very easily since I got it about two weeks back. It's lightweight and slim enough to fit in the cargo pockets of a few pair of shorts I wear in the summer, and it's size and blade stock is certainly enough to do most any heavy duty job you'd need in a folding knife.
Have an AD10, and like it. Just ordered the 4max scout. I wonder if I could survive falling in water with this knife = a pistol & extra mag on my belt, without my Floaties...
I am a Cold Steel fan. I bought mine for under $80 on Amazon. Rarely do I EDC my 4Max Scout, but I ATC (At Home Carry) it mostly. Good knife AND video!
Late to the game Kevin but as usual excellent review. Own both the 4 MAX and a couple of the scouts along with a couple AD 10. kind of wish I could get a set of the Scout scales for the AD 10. Just very comfortable.
I love my 4 max. I wear jeans at work mandatory and I can carry it and really forget it’s there. I agree I can’t wear it with light shorts but everyday at work it will work. Although today is carrying my AD10. Is the blade thinner behind the edge on the 4 max than the AD10. To the eye it looks thinner.
Great Folding blade with superior lockup, would be perfect as ranch work knife, heavy industry or use when a fixed blade on a belt might get in the way. Outdoor wilderness knife would be okay but as a folder would possibly get gummed up quick so cleaning could be a bit of a chore. (I own one)
As usual awesome review, Kevin. I’ve been wondering (for my purposes) which 4Max to get, as I find it an inevitability. I think, for now, the Scout will do me just right!
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Daniel Huxley I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Is the total blade length on the 4max scout slightly more than 4 inches? (Looks like the handle scale doesn't approach the plunge grind as closely as on the original 4max.) Thanks for the video; really enjoy your channel!
Just purchased the DLT exclusive to replace my Recon 1 tanto as my work knife. IF COLD STEEL WOUKD GET OFF THEIR ASSES AND PUT THE RECON 1 BACK IN STOCK I WOULDA BOUGHT ANOTHER ONE!!! I freaking love my Recon 1 and beat the tar out of it and it just kept on asking for more until I sharpened it to much after 2 years of abuse lol.
Great review! I wonder why Cold Steel did not use aluminum liners here like in the AD 10, which I also like very much? By the way I have just ordered a 4 Max Scout, why not? I like big knifes and the Ultimate Hunter was not quiet to my liking.
The OG 4max has a ridiculous price when compared to the AD10. Similar materials, about 1/5 larger yet over double the price. Compare that to the 4max scout and the choice is obvious. The scout is 1/3 the price of the 4max and it isn’t lacking in quality.
What kind of washers did you say they are? I'm thinking of buying one of these. Should I order an extra set of washers for it and if so; where could I source them? Also, does anyone make aftermarket scales for it?
Good review and comparison. I own the original and the Scout and think they are fantastic knives. $100 for this knife is a great bargain and if you have any doubts about the steel just watch Jimislash's video on it and he will make a believer out of you.
